  • The Calculating Stars

The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal

The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal is $2.99! I have a feeling this is on sale because of the Apollo 11 anniversary. Carrie read this one and gave it a B grade:

Even though at first I found this book to be slow going, I came to appreciate it for its intersectional feminism and its unabashed adoration of all the science and math that goes into making space flight possible.

A meteor decimates the U.S. government and paves the way for a climate cataclysm that will eventually render the earth inhospitable to humanity. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated timeline in the earth’s efforts to colonize space, as well as an unprecedented opportunity for a much larger share of humanity to take part.

One of these new entrants in the space race is Elma York, whose experience as a WASP pilot and mathematician earns her a place in the International Aerospace Coalition’s attempts to put man on the moon. But with so many skilled and experienced women pilots and scientists involved with the program, it doesn’t take long before Elma begins to wonder why they can’t go into space, too—aside from some pesky barriers like thousands of years of history and a host of expectations about the proper place of the fairer sex. And yet, Elma’s drive to become the first Lady Astronaut is so strong that even the most dearly held conventions may not stand a chance.

  • The Best Kind of Trouble

The Best Kind of Trouble by Lauren Dane

The Best Kind of Trouble by Lauren Dane is $1.99. This is book 1 of the Hurley Brothers series, and is about a former rock star and a librarian in a small town who once upon a time had a serious fling with him – which she’d prefer he didn’t bring up. (That never works out the way they want, right?) This book has a 3.8-star average.

She has complete control…and he’s determined to take it away

A librarian in the small town of Hood River, Natalie Clayton’s world is very nearly perfect. After a turbulent childhood and her once-wild ways, life is now under control. But trouble has a way of turning up unexpectedly—especially in the tall, charismatically sexy form of Paddy Hurley….

And Paddy is the kind of trouble that Natalie has a taste for.

Even after years of the rock-and-roll lifestyle, Paddy never forgot the two wickedly hot weeks he once shared with Natalie. Now he wants more…even if it means tempting Natalie and her iron-grip control. But there’s a fine line between well-behaved and misbehaved—and the only compromise is between the sheets!

  • Penalty Play

    Penalty Play by Lynda Aicher

Penalty Play by Lynda Aicher is $1.99! This is the third book in the Power Play series, but can be read on its own. I’m always wary of heroes who refer to women as “bimbos.” However, readers like how much chemistry the hero and heroine had. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

Minnesota Glaciers’ starting defenseman Henrik Grenick is good at two things: hockey and sex. He’s got it all—the career, the biceps, the babes. But the steady parade of women through his bedroom just leaves him wanting more, hunting for the next distraction. Until he meets Jacqui, who awakens a hunger he never knew he craved.

Fiercely independent Jacqui Polson has no time for the seductive hockey player demanding her attention. More band geek than bimbo, she’s in an entirely different league, and growing up with four hockey-crazed brothers left her with no interest in that world. But damn, Henrik’s hot. And when it comes to sex, Jacqui knows exactly what she wants.

As their relationship moves beyond games, Henrik needs more—not just of Jacqui’s touch, but of her. Jacqui discovers there’s more to Henrik than just the gruff facade. But after a lifetime of fighting their own battles, neither has ever let anyone get so close. As they soon find out, needing someone isn’t a weakness, it’s the only thing that matters…

  • The Derby Girl

The Derby Girl by Tamara Morgan

The Derby Girl by Tamara Morgan is 99c! This is an opposites attract romance between a derby girl (whose derby name is Honey Badger!) and a doctor. Readers loved how different the characters seemed, but some say that nothing really happened in the book. This is the second book in the Getting Physical series and you can grab all three books for around $3.

Roller derby girl Gretchen “Honey Badger” Badgerton lives in the moment, no apologies. Like every woman in Pleasant Park with a pulse, she finds Dr. Jared Fine irresistible, but she’s taken by surprise when her unattainable new neighbor asks her out.

On paper, Jared is the perfect man: gorgeous, wealthy and charitable. But his golden image is just that, and opening an upstate practice is a welcome chance to start a new life. When Gretchen stops to help him with a flat tire, he’s intrigued by her feisty attitude—and her sexy body art. There’s something refreshing about being with a take-charge woman who doesn’t expect him to be anything but himself.

Though Gretchen is hesitant to shatter Jared’s “bad girl” illusion of her, she has to face facts: she’s fallen for the good doctor. She’s used to putting everyone else’s needs before hers, but as their relationship heats up, can she handle having someone take care of her for a change?

  1. Lora says:

    I’m sorry. Paddy Hurley?
The name just doesn’t work for me.
This is me, judging a book by the names.

  2. yetanotherjane says:

Lara, Paddy is the nickname for Padraig, an Irish name, and Hurley is a common Irish last name, too. 🙂

  3. DonnaMarie says:

@Lora, you need to get past it. The Hurley Brothers are lovely, especially the third book (actually fourth, the first brother’s story is the last book in another series).

Can’t believe I didn’t mention The Calculating Stars in the moon tribute earlier this week. I loved that series.

Luckily for my wallet, I’ve obviously read Two of the four. I do love me some roller derby though.

  4. genie says:

The Calculating Stars is also nominated for the Hugo for best novel this year, and well worth it!!!

  5. Michelle says:

Book 3 of the Hurley’s has a hero who had behaved in, for me, irredeemable ways.

His mother is AWFUL. Really. I won’t spoil it, but GR has reviews that do. YMMV.

  6. Lora says:

@DonnaMarie and @yetanotherjane: Oh i’m sure they’re excellent and I mean in no way to defame the series. Just saying the name is a nope for me. Stopped a historical once because the mc was Phyllida.
Names I’ve loved though: Magnus Bane in Mortal Instruments, Plutarch Heavensbee in Catching FIre, Jamie Fraser (and no i have no idea why Paddy bothers me and Jamie doesnt namewise…)

  7. DonnaMarie says:

@Michele, I’m probably misremembering the order. If book 3 is the divorced couple, you’re right, their mom went way off the rails. I’m thinking the recovering addict brother.

  8. WS says:

Boy; that sale was over fast. The first book is already back to $9.99.

  9. Batman says:

I *want* to read Derby Girl, but I don’t know if I can. Both of my daughters are “derby girls” and I am a card-carrying derby mom… I’m really worried about my ability to separate fantasy and reality on this one.
