  • Fearless in Texas

Fearless in Texas by Kari Lynn Dell

Fearless in Texas by Kari Lynn Dell is $1.99 at Amazon and Barnes & Noble! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and book four in a contemporary western series. There seemed to be some division on the heroine. Some liked her angry and prickly nature, while others thought she did too much self-sabotaging.

He’d step in front of a bull to save a life

But even he’s no match for a girl this Texas tough

Rodeo bullfighter Wyatt Darrington’s got it all figured out. The perfect car, the perfect job, the perfect looks-the perfect lie. He may be on the fast track to the Hall of Fame, but he knows he’ll always be an outsider to people like Melanie Brookman. Texas-born and bred, with the arena in her blood, Melanie’s come to see Wyatt as her personal enemy, and that suits him just fine-this way, she’ll never realize the truth.

He’s been crazy in love with her for years.

Melanie’s always been a fighter. Fiercely independent and tough as nails, she’s stood up to everything that got in her way-including Wyatt. But now her infamous temper’s got her on the ropes, and there’s nowhere left to run but toward the man she swore she’d never trust…and this time, there’s no denying just how hot he makes her burn.

  • It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time

It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time by Kylie Scott

It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time by Kylie Scott is $1.99 at Amazon! It’s available at other vendors, just not at the sale price just yet. This contemporary romance has a fifteen year age difference between the hero and heroine, if that is or isn’t your bag.

Returning home for her father’s wedding was never going to be easy for Adele. If being sent away at eighteen hadn’t been bad enough, the mess she left behind when she made a pass at her dad’s business partner sure was.

Fifteen years older than her, Pete had been her crush for as long as she could remember. But she’d misread the situation—confusing friendliness for undying love. Awkward. Add her father to the misunderstanding, and Pete was left with a broken nose and a business on the edge of ruin. The man had to be just as glad as everyone else when she left town.

Seven years later, things are different. Adele is no longer a kid, but a fully grown adult more than capable of getting through the wedding and being polite. But all it takes is seeing him again to bring back those old feelings.

Sometimes first loves are the truest.

  • Sizzle

    Sizzle by Julie Garwood

Sizzle by Julie Garwood is $1.99! This is part of Garwood’s Buchanan/FBI romantic suspense series. I’m more accustomed to Garwood’s historicals and I feel like most readers prefer those over her contemporary-set romances. Which camp are you in?

Lyra Prescott, a Los Angeles film student, is closing in on graduation and facing important decisions about her future. She’s already been offered a job at her hometown TV station, an opportunity that could ultimately launch her dream career as a film editor. But heading back home would also mean dealing with her overprotective brothers, social-climbing mother, and eccentric grandmother. Unsure of her future, Lyra dives into work on her final school assignment: a documentary transformed by a twist of fate into a real-life horror film.

After she unwittingly captures a shocking crime on camera, a rash of mysterious, treacherous incidents convince Lyra that she’s trapped in a sinister scenario headed for a violent ending. Running scared, she turns to her best friend, Sidney Buchanan, whose connections bring dauntless and devilishly handsome FBI agent Sam Kincaid into Lyra’s life. As the noose of deadly intrigue tightens and the feelings between them deepen, Lyra and Sam must place their faith in each other’s hands – and stand together against the malevolent forces about to break loose.

  • The Bees

    The Bees by Laline Paull

RECOMMENDEDThe Bees by Laline Paull is $1.99! I LOVED this book. Margaret Atwood tweeted about the book, calling it a mix between a Cinderella story and an Arthurian tale. On GoodReads, I gave it a 4-star rating and a mini review:

This book was unlike anything I’ve read before, and I found it both unique and mesmerizing. However, the last fifty pages seemed to lack the care and craft of the ones before it. The ending was over in a rush and I felt Flora’s story should have continued on with more detail. Regardless, I was impressed with Paull’s storytelling and her ability to make bee life

The Handmaid’s Tale meets The Hunger Games in this brilliantly imagined debut set in an ancient culture where only the queen may breed and deformity means death.

Flora 717 is a sanitation worker, a member of the lowest caste in her orchard hive where work and sacrifice are the highest virtues and worship of the beloved Queen the only religion. But Flora is not like other bees. With circumstances threatening the hive’s survival, her curiosity is regarded as a dangerous flaw but her courage and strength are an asset. She is allowed to feed the newborns in the royal nursery and then to become a forager, flying alone and free to collect pollen. She also finds her way into the Queen’s inner sanctum, where she discovers mysteries about the hive that are both profound and ominous.

But when Flora breaks the most sacred law of all—daring to challenge the Queen’s fertility—enemies abound, from the fearsome fertility police who enforce the strict social hierarchy to the high priestesses jealously wedded to power. Her deepest instincts to serve and sacrifice are now overshadowed by an even deeper desire, a fierce maternal love that will bring her into conflict with her conscience, her heart, her society—and lead her to unthinkable deeds.

Thrilling, suspenseful and spectacularly imaginative, The Bees gives us a dazzling young heroine and will change forever the way you look at the world outside your window.

  1. Liz says:

Are the characters literally insects in THE BEES, or humans and the Bee stuff is symbolic?

Not sure I would be able to read the former, without feeling like I’m losing my mind.

  2. @Amanda says:

@Liz: Literal bees. It’s weird, but a good weird.

  3. Liz says:

@Amanda, thanks! Think I’ll have to pass for my sanity’s sake.

  4. LauraL says:

The Bees looks interesting and I found out I can get it from free with Amazon Prime.

I attended a presentation on bee-keeping a few weeks ago and a lot of time was spent on bee society. From the book description, perhaps the author is a bee-keeper?

  5. k.n.lindgren@gmail.com says:

    I’m scared of bees X_X

  6. DonnaMarie says:

Bees are our friends, and we’d starve to death without them. I’m in.

  7. Maureen says:

So-first of all-I think as @DonnaMarie says-we all must be a friend to bees. I know they don’t know it-but we are totally at their mercy. If they are all gone-we are all dead. I plant bee friendly plants every summer-and I rejoice when I see them among my plants.

Aside from my bee love-my love of Kari Lynn Dell! She is such a good writer-but I did read this series from the beginning, so would I jump in at this book? I would definitely buy it at this great price, then start at the beginning. I love her descriptions of ranch life-I worked on a farm for years-which is different from a ranch-but livestock care is similar. I feel this is an author who knows what she is talking about-and anyone who has sweated for 12 or more hours a day, caring for livestock? For once, I wasn’t raising an eyebrow thing “are you kidding me?”.

  8. Merm8fan says:

The Bees audio book was great – and I took the gamble based on a recommendation from this very site, iirc. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself caring so much about that feisty bee! Possibly not for everyone, but it definitely sucked me in to that world.

  9. Emily B says:

I enjoyed the Kylie Scott book because I like her writing, but I didn’t totally buy the romance in this one – I didn’t feel the hero did enough to make up for his screw up, and there was a trope-y plot device I won’t spoil here but that I felt was used to tie things back together, and without it I don’t think the couple would have really gotten back together.

  10. Ashley M. says:

I’m generally a bigger fan of Garwood’s historicals. I find that in her contemporaries (especially some of her more recent contemporaries) there’s a lot of telling and not as much showing. So, so much telling.

However, I really enjoyed Sizzle! It’s made the jump from being read as a library book to me buying my own copy to live on my bookshelf for rereading. If you’re looking to try some Garwood contemporaries, I would recommend to start reading her earlier ones over her later releases, and my personal recommendations are Shadow Dance (I LOVE SHADOW DANCE I LOVE THIS BOOK I LOVE IT SO MUCH), Killjoy, and Sizzle.
