  • The Serpent

    The Serpent by Sarah Fine

The Serpent by Sarah Fine is $1.99 at Amazon! This is the first book in the urban fantasy Immortal Dealers series. I mentioned it on a previous Hide Your Wallet and it’s part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. Like with many new urban fantasy series, it can be a rocky start as readers get their footing with the worldbuilding. And this one is no exception, but readers say it ultimately delivers.

One woman is in a world of otherworldly trouble—and she’s going to have to bet her life to save humankind.

Ernestine “Ernie” Terwilliger has put her dreams aside to look after her eccentric mother. Case in point: saving her from a mysterious stranger who’s just stormed the terrified woman’s antique store wearing a rattlesnake tattoo, leveling threats, and brandishing the weirdest deck of cards Ernie’s ever seen.

When Ernie grabs some of the cards and runs, she’s launched into a world she never knew existed—one her mother may know more about than she’s revealing. With a handful of stolen cards, Ernie has just been made an unwilling player in a game of good versus evil. But she’s not even playing with a full deck, and its original owner is more than happy to kill to get his cards back.

Suddenly Ernie’s matching wits and plays with the supernatural Immortal Dealers, who can raise empires, damn souls, and shape the world’s destiny. It’s up to Ernie to defeat the most brutal member of their order. And if her roguish new ally isn’t bluffing, he can help. The mystery is all in the cards, and to save her life—and humanity—Ernie had better learn how to deal.

  • Sherwood

    Sherwood by Meagan Spooner

Sherwood by Meagan Spooner is $2.99! This is a retelling of Robin Hood with a woman taking up the mantle. It released this March and was featured on Hide Your Wallet. Elyse loved Spooner’s Hunted, which has Beauty and the Beast themes, but reviews on Goodreads say that Sherwood wasn’t as captivating.

Fans of Danielle Paige, Marissa Meyer, and Alex Flinn will devour New York Times bestselling author Meagan Spooner’s next fierce fairy tale-inspired story, which Illuminae author Amie Kaufman calls “a kick-ass, gender-flipped feminist retelling.”

    Robin of Locksley is dead.

Maid Marian doesn’t know how she’ll go on, but the people of Locksley town, persecuted by the Sheriff of Nottingham, need a protector. And the dreadful Guy of Gisborne, the Sheriff’s right hand, wishes to step into Robin’s shoes as Lord of Locksley and Marian’s fiancé.

Who is there to stop them?

Marian never meant to tread in Robin’s footsteps—never intended to stand as a beacon of hope to those awaiting his triumphant return. But with a sweep of his green cloak and the flash of her sword, Marian makes the choice to become her own hero: Robin Hood.

  • The Tiger at Midnight

The Tiger at Midnight by Swati Teerdhala

The Tiger at Midnight by Swati Teerdhala is $2.99! This is the first book in a YA fantasy trilogy of the same name and has Hindu mythology elements. Readers seem divided on this one on whether it lived up to its hype. Some say yes, while others expected more.

The first book in an epic heart-pounding fantasy trilogy inspired by ancient Indian history and Hindu mythology, perfect for fans of Sabaa Tahir and Renée Ahdieh.

A broken bond. A dying land. A cat-and-mouse game that can only end in bloodshed.

Esha lost everything in the royal coup—and as the legendary rebel known as the Viper, she’s made the guilty pay. Now she’s been tasked with her most important mission to date: taking down the ruthless General Hotha.

Kunal has been a soldier since childhood. His uncle, the general, has ensured that Kunal never strays from the path—even as a part of Kunal longs to join the outside world, which has only been growing more volatile.

When Esha and Kunal’s paths cross one fated night, an impossible chain of events unfolds. Both the Viper and the soldier think they’re calling the shots, but they’re not the only players moving the pieces.

As the bonds that hold their land in order break down and the sins of the past meet the promise of a new future, both the soldier and the rebel must decide where their loyalties lie: with the lives they’ve killed to hold on to or with the love that’s made them dream of something more.

  • A Rogue to Remember

A Rogue to Remember by Chasity Bowlin

A Rogue to Remember by Chasity Bowlin is 99c at Amazon! This is the first book in the Hellion Club series. I may be in the minority but I love this cover and I’m a sucker for any book that includes a school for girls. This book as a ton of positive reviews on Goodreads and was released on the 11th. However, the whole “sent to India as punishment” makes me wary.

Welcome to Book One in “The Hellion Club”, the nickname for the Darrow School, where miscreant noblemen send their illegitimate daughters to keep them out of sight, out of mind, and to make them employable.

It’s propriety, secrets, and passion in this scorching new series!

Douglas “Devil” Ashton, Lord Deveril, was forced by his father to join the army and was exiled to India. It was punishment for all his many wicked, wild and reckless ways. While serving his country, the unthinkable happens at home. Devil’s sister is seduced by a fortune hunter and cast out by their father. By the time Devil returns to England, he’s too late to save her… but if he can obtain the right governess, one who specializes in working with children others have deemed unmanageable, he might be able to save his niece.

There is only one problem – no respectable woman would ever consent to be employed in the house of the Devil Lord. If she did, she’d never be able to be employed elsewhere again, as his very name is synonymous with ruin.

But Wilhelmina Marks is no ordinary governess. She’s a graduate of the Darrow School, an integral member of The Hellion Club, and a determined lady in her own right. Marina, Lord Deveril’s niece is a challenge… but not nearly as challenging as her uncle. He is all that they have said of him. Hedonistic. Rakishly charming. Too handsome by far. But also kind and perhaps a little broken. It’s that combination which draws Willa to him and makes him irresistible to her.

But danger looms when Marina’s wastrel, fortune hunting father returns, intent on claiming his daughter.

Willa and Devil must work together to keep the little girl safe… is it a recipe for disaster or a recipe for love?

  1. DonnaMarie says:

@Amanda, I agree, that cover is luscious. And the story sounds tasty too.

…Sorry, getting close to lunch time.

  2. CelineB says:

After seeing it mentioned in a Whatcha Reading post, I put the book Burnout by Emily Nagoski in my wish list which apparently gave me a $5 credit to use towards it or certain other Penguin Random House books. It shows up as ‘Special Wish List Credit’ under the regular kindle price then shows the total with the credit subtracted out. It includes The Bride Test by Helen Hoang (making it 4.99), Crazy Rich Asians, Educated by Tara Westover, and the newest ones by Nalini Singh, Patricia Briggs, Anna Lee Huber, and CS Harris. I’m not sure exactly how getting the credit works, but it’s worth adding one or some of those to a wish list to see if it works for you.

  3. CelineB says:

I also noticed it’s good towards The Kiss Quotient, Next Year in Havana and When We Left Cuba both by Chanel Cleeton, The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory, the newest Deanna Raybourn, the newest Sherry Thomas, and a lot of popular nonfiction books. All of these are more expensive books so the credit just makes the more affordable rather than cheap, but it’s still nice. Just to make sure it’s clear, it’s a one time use credit. The books I’ve listed are just ones I’ve noticed the credit showing up as being available to use towards purchase when browsing options.

  4. Ren Benton says:

@CelineB: Ah, I also got the $5 off email from Amazon that named a specific book and didn’t think to look at any others, but when I click other PRH books from my list, they do show the credit applicable in the buy box. Since half the not-at-that-price books on my wish list are Penguin titles, that’s useful information. Thanks for sharing.

Off to cycle through these 20 open tabs to decide the best use of that $5 discount…

  5. MirandaB says:

I used the credit to get ‘Where the Dead Lie’ by C.S. Harris, since apparently that’s the ONLY way to get the st. cyr books at anything like a decent price. ::eyeroll::

  6. JudyJ865 says:

FWIW, that Penguin $5 Amazon credit worked THREE times for me on my more expensive Penguin Wish List items. Bought three different 9.99 books for 4.99. Then it stopped showing up in my wish list. Sigh! But yay for the three time score! I am a happy camper.

  7. Darlynne says:

OK, what is the Penguin credit and how did I (possibly) miss it? It’s different than the Great Books selection, afaik, because that’s all non-fiction. Can you help a bitch out?

  8. CelineB says:

@Darlynne, I’m not entirely sure, but I added a Penguin book to my wish list and got an email that said this,
    “Dear Amazon.com Customer,

Thank you for adding Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle to your Wish List. We have applied a $5 Kindle book credit to your account to use on this book.

You can claim this credit within 7 days from when it is applied to your account.”

I didn’t even pay attention to the email, but then I looked up an author from the last Rec League post (Tamara Berry) and happened to see the book had a $5 promo credit subtracted from it. When I hit details it said “Special Wish List Credit” then I investigated and realized it must have had to be related to adding Burnout to my wishlist. It seems like it shows up on Penguin books $9.99 and above. So maybe check out your wishlist to see if any show the credit when you look at the details page or add one listed above to your wish list and see if that works.

Hope that helps. Like I said, it’s kind of a mysterious credit so I don’t know if it will work for everyone, but it’s worth a shot.

  9. JudyJ865 says:

@Darlynne Penguin credit? How? Again, FWIW, I did NOT receive an email notifying me of credit, just happened to be looking at my list. Opened up an Ilona Andrews item, and it showed 9.99 with a 5.00 “wish list” credit applied, total 4.99. Very mysterious, I agree. I then thought “what the heck” and went over my entire list and opened each item individually, and several items had the 5.00 credit showing. I bought two more Penguin authors, Nnedi Okorafor and Shelly Laurenston, and when I opened another Penguin listing, the credit line had disappeared. Why three? No idea. These items had all been on my wish list for sometime waiting for price reductions.

  10. Susan says:

FYI–here’s the notice I received for adding a cookbook to my wish list. I haven’t checked to see if it works for any other books.

    “Dear Amazon.com Customer,
Thank you for adding Lidia’s Mastering the Art of Italian Cuisine: Everything You Need to Know to Be a Great Italian Cook to your Wish List. We have applied a $5 Kindle book credit to your account to use on this book.

You can claim this credit within 7 days from when it is applied to your account”

  11. Ren Benton says:

Friday, THE GUNS ABOVE by Robyn Bennis is $2.99. Airships. “Sass.”

  12. Claudia says:

Guys, also on Friday — Appetites and Vices by Felicia Grossman is 99 cents (on Amazon at least). Jewish heroine, false engagement trope, set in 1840s U.S.

  13. Susan/DC says:

The new take on the Robin Hood story reminds me a bit of Gayle Feyrer’s “The Thief’s Mistress”, a book I adored. As the title implies, Marian was at the center of the story and she was smart, tough, and a force to be reckoned with. Robin is the hero and Guy de Guisborne the antihero, and Marian needs to choose between the light and the dark. There are aspects of the book I did not care for, but the 3 main protagonists are so vividly written that they remain among my favorites of the romance genre.
