She Lies in Wait
RECOMMENDED: She Lies in Wait by Gytha Lodge is $1.99! This is a British police procedural that Elyse enjoyed. She gave it an A:
I found myself really engaged in this novel, and for a debut mystery I thought the pacing and plot execution was excellent.
Get ready for the biggest crime debut of 2019…
Six friends. One killer. Who do you trust?
“A dark, deep, terrific thriller and a scorching portrait of friendship and its betrayal” Nicci French
On a hot July night in 1983, six school friends go camping in the forest. Bright and brilliant, they are destined for great things, and young Aurora Jackson is dazzled to be allowed to tag along.
Thirty years later, a body is discovered. DCI Sheens is called to the scene, but he already knows what’s waiting for him: Aurora Jackson, found at long last.
But that’s not all. The friends have all maintained their innocence, but the body is found in a hideaway only the six of them knew about.
It seems the killer has always lurked very close to home…

Contagion
Contagion by Erin Bowman is $1.99! This is the first book in a YA sci-fi/horror series. Elyse gave this one a B grade and warned of a cliffhanger:
So if creepy space shit is your cup of tea, then I’d recommend Contagion. It offers a twist on a genre that’s seen a lot of mileage, and I’m excited for the next installment.
IT GOT IN US
After receiving an urgent SOS from a work detail on a distant planet, a skeleton crew is dispatched to perform a standard search-and-rescue mission.

But when the crew arrives, they find an abandoned site, littered with rotten food, discarded weapons…and dead bodies.
DON’T SET FOOT HERE AGAIN
As they try to piece together who—or what—could have decimated an entire operation, they discover that some things are best left buried—and some monsters are only too ready to awaken.

Wicked and the Wallflower
Wicked and the Wallflower by Sarah MacLean is $1.99! This is the first book in the Bareknuckle Bastards series and the second book is out next month! Readers really enjoyed the dialogue in this one, but caution that it’s a little slow to start.
When Wicked Comes Calling…
When a mysterious stranger finds his way into her bedchamber and offers his help in landing a duke, Lady Felicity Faircloth agrees—on one condition. She’s seen enough of the world to believe in passion, and won’t accept a marriage without it.
The Wallflower Makes a Dangerous Bargain…
Bastard son of a duke and king of London’s dark streets, Devil has spent a lifetime wielding power and seizing opportunity, and the spinster wallflower is everything he needs to exact a revenge years in the making. All he must do is turn the plain little mouse into an irresistible temptress, set his trap, and destroy his enemy.
For the Promise of Passion…
But there’s nothing plain about Felicity Faircloth, who quickly decides she’d rather have Devil than another. Soon, Devil’s carefully laid plans are in chaos, and he must choose between everything he’s ever wanted…and the only thing he’s ever desired.

Bring Me Their Hearts
Bring Me Their Hearts by Sara Wolf is $1.99! I mentioned how kickass this sounded in June 2018’s Hide Your Wallet. Some readers wished the romance were more developed, while others say the premise really delivered. It has a 4.1-star rating on Goodreads.
Zera is a Heartless – the immortal, unageing soldier of a witch. Bound to the witch Nightsinger ever since she saved her from the bandits who murdered her family, Zera longs for freedom from the woods they hide in. With her heart in a jar under Nightsinger’s control, she serves the witch unquestioningly.
Until Nightsinger asks Zera for a Prince’s heart in exchange for her own, with one addendum; if she’s discovered infiltrating the court, Nightsinger will destroy her heart rather than see her tortured by the witch-hating nobles.
Crown Prince Lucien d’Malvane hates the royal court as much as it loves him – every tutor too afraid to correct him and every girl jockeying for a place at his darkly handsome side. No one can challenge him – until the arrival of Lady Zera. She’s inelegant, smart-mouthed, carefree, and out for his blood. The Prince’s honor has him quickly aiming for her throat.
So begins a game of cat and mouse between a girl with nothing to lose and a boy who has it all.
Winner takes the loser’s heart.
Literally.

Unholy Ghosts by Stacia Kane is $1.99. Chess checks all the boxes for an unlikable heroine and then writes in a few more, if that’s your jam. I looooooved these until I got frustrated at Book #4(?) because she hadn’t grown AT ALL, but if you can approach it from the James Bond Angle (character is static, adventure is the point), that might not bother you. Loved the worldbuilding. Loved the supporting cast.
Any updates on reviewer applications? I’m sure there were a lot lol
@EllenM: We’re still going through them! We received well over a hundred.
“Silk Is For Seduction” by Loretta Chase is $1.99 for Kindle, and “Scandal Wears Satin” is $0.99. They are the first two books in her Dressmakers series.
I thought Bring Me Their Hearts was good until I got to the ending and it was a cliffhanger. Book 2 is announced for November but in the author’s note of Bring Me Their Hearts Sara Wolf mentioned always wanting to write a trilogy so I guess even book 2 isn’t going to give me the closure I need…
Ooh, this was very helpful – I’ve liked Erin Bowman’s other books, so even if it’s not great, I’m betting I’ll like it. I love space horror!
What does the bitchery think of Wicked and the Wallflower? I loved Sarah Maclean’s first few novels but have been pretty meh on the last few and didn’t buy this one when it was released.
@Lizzy I gave it 3.5 stars. Cute, but pretty forgettable. It did have some interesting tidbits and historical details.
But I’ll keep an eye out for the next at the series at the library.
@Lizzy: I’m a little tougher on it than @Shenanigans & gave it 3 stars. It’s a perfectly good read if you’re in the mood for an historical & have nothing else in your reading list, & it’s a different setting from her earlier series – but given the choice, I’d reread one of those earlier ones instead.
Thanks for the flash reviews guys! I’m not sure two reviews summing a book up as perfectly cromulent are enough to get me to buy it.
The basic situation in “Bring Me Their Hearts” has similarities to Erin Morgenstern’s “The Night Circus”, where a young boy and girl compete, not knowing that they are merely pawns in a larger competition and one of them must die. Their growing love for each other complicates the situation. I loved this book.
Thanks for the news about the Loretta Chase sale, HeatherS!
