  • Strange Practice

    Strange Practice by Vivian Shaw

Strange Practice by Vivian Shaw is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and it’s being price-matched. I’ve been so curious about this one because the heroine is a “fast-talking doctor to the undead.” It sounds all sorts of awesome. If you’ve read this one, let me know what you thought!

Meet Greta Helsing, fast-talking doctor to the undead. Keeping the supernatural community not-alive and well in London has been her family’s specialty for generations.

Greta Helsing inherited the family’s highly specialized, and highly peculiar, medical practice. In her consulting rooms, Dr. Helsing treats the undead for a host of ills – vocal strain in banshees, arthritis in barrow-wights, and entropy in mummies. Although barely making ends meet, this is just the quiet, supernatural-adjacent life Greta’s been groomed for since childhood.

Until a sect of murderous monks emerges, killing human and undead Londoners alike. As terror takes hold of the city, Greta must use her unusual skills to stop the cult if she hopes to save her practice, and her life.

  • Hidden Impact

    Hidden Impact by Piper Drake

RECOMMENDED: Hidden Impact by Piper J. Drake is $1.99! Not only should you check out Elyse’s previous review, but here’s what she had to say:

The first book in the Safeguard series is everything I like in romantic suspense–over-the-top heroes, international espionage, things blowing up, but no real threat of violence (physical or sexual) to the main characters. It’s popcorn action movie suspense, lots of fun but no real darkness. Plus the heroine is a chef and OMG this book will make you hungry.

    He’s not the hero she’s looking for…

As part of the elite Centurion Corporation team, military-veteran-turned-mercenary Gabriel Diaz is a natural defender. He’ll do anything to ensure a mission is successful. Anything but get emotionally invested—he learned the hard way that can be deadly. Easy bodyguard jobs in between the more challenging missions are all he’s interested in now.

Maylin Cheng is desperate and running out of time. Her younger sister has gone missing but no one seems to take her concern seriously. Her last hope lies in asking an aloof bodyguard for help. He dismisses her outright, but all that changes when she is almost killed in a not-so-accidental hit-and-run right before his eyes.

As Maylin leans on Gabriel, she begins to rely on him for more than just her safety. But as their attraction grows, so does the danger surrounding them. When the elaborate web they’re trapped in unravels, Gabriel will do anything to protect them. Even if that means putting his heart in the crosshairs.

  • Fall

    Fall by Kristen Callihan

Fall by Kristen Callihan is $1.99 at Amazon! The book is available elsewhere, but not on sale. Content warning as the hero in this one survived a suicide attempt; it’s a main plot point in the first book in this series, Idol. I’m a fan of Callihan’s writing, but this series in particular is heavy on angst.

The first time I met Jax Blackwood things went a little sideways.

In my defense, I didn’t know he was Jax Blackwood—who expects a legendary rock star to be shopping for groceries? More importantly, a blizzard was coming and he was about to grab the last carton of mint-chocolate chip.

Still, I might have walked away, but then he smugly dared me to try and take the coveted ice cream. So I kissed him. And distracted that mint-chip right out of his hands.

Okay, it was a dirty move, but desperate times and all that. Besides, I never expected he’d be my new neighbor.

An annoying neighbor who takes great pleasure in reminding me that I owe him ice cream but would happily accept more kisses as payment. An irresistible neighbor who keeps me up while playing guitar naked–spectacularly naked–in his living room.

Clearly, avoidance is key. Except nothing about Jax is easy to ignore—not the way he makes me laugh, or that his particular brand of darkness matches mine, or how one look from him melts me faster than butter under a hot sun.

Neither of us believes in love or forever. Yet we’re quickly becoming each other’s addiction. But we could be more. We could be everything.

All we have to do is trust enough to fall.

  • Queens of Geek

Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde

Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde is $2.99! Sarah and I recommended this on a podcast for a reader looking for bisexual heroines in lesbian relationships. Readers love the convention setting, but some felt the book didn’t live up to the hype they heard or their own expectations.

Three friends, two love stories, one convention: this fun, feminist love letter to geek culture is all about fandom, friendship, and finding the courage to be yourself.

Charlie likes to stand out. She’s a vlogger and actress promoting her first movie at SupaCon, and this is her chance to show fans she’s over her public breakup with co-star Reese Ryan. When internet-famous cool-girl actress Alyssa Huntington arrives as a surprise guest, it seems Charlie’s long-time crush on her isn’t as one-sided as she thought. Taylor likes to blend in. Her brain is wired differently, making her fear change. And there’s one thing in her life she knows will never change: her friendship with her best guy friend Jamie—no matter how much she may secretly want it to. But when she hears about a fan contest for her favorite fandom, she starts to rethink her rules on playing it safe.

  1. Patsy says:

Speaking of rock stars, has anyone read Daisy Jones and the Six?

  2. @Amanda says:

@Patsy: I haven’t but it was recommend in my romance book club last month. The person said the audio is fantastic.

  3. Celia says:

I loved Strange Practice and the sequel – a lot of fun playing with variations of supernatural beings. I’ve got friends who read it who felt some of the relationship development is uneven, but I found it sort of reassuring and mature – people who have a clue what they want and when they’ve found it.

(I’m really looking forward to the third book, which is coming out soon.)

  4. MirandaB says:

I found Strange Practice to be a lot of fun. There were some lol lines, and the story was good.

  5. Poppy says:

@Patsy I enjoyed Daisy Jones and the Six so much! The audiobook version was amazing with a full cast narration. I had to keep reminding myself it was fiction and that they weren’t a real band I could go look up on Youtube or something!

Strange Practice was great! I really loved it, it was so much fun to read. I still need to read the second one though.

  6. I love Strange Practices. I love the muddle of the relationships — like @Celia, it seems real to me. There’s a sweetness and kindness at the heart of it (and the next book) that reminds me of the sweetness and kindness at the heart of The Goblin Emperor, even though the stories are very different. I understand the third book is the last one in the series, and I have to say I’m really bummed about that.

  7. MaryK says:

I couldn’t finish Strange Practice. I loved the characters and the relationships, but there were some (slight) horror aspects that I couldn’t handle and I had to stop reading. (People taken over by an entity and their bodies slowly destroyed.) I intend to try it again sometime if I’m ever feeling less squeamish.

  8. Katie Lynn says:

I *just* finished Fall this weekend, I really enjoyed it. Both the characters have issues they’re working through during the book. There is some depression described, but no suicidal thoughts/ideation, because the hero realized during his attempt that it wasn’t what he actually wanted. He sees a therapist weekly and talks with the heroine about it (yay!). I’d say that it’s no more angsty than Callihan’s NA series, if you’ve read those.

  9. Barb says:

I also loved Strange Practice and the sequel, Dreadful Company. The various beings Greta encounters are wonderful (except for, you know, the murderous ones), and the main cast is a lovely found family. The third book, Grave Importance, is due in August, but I would like it in my eyeballs now, please.

  10. Jennifer in GA says:

    @Patsy-

I LOOOOOVED Daisy Jones and the Six!!! The use of the oral history format was a stoke of genius, and the characters were fantastic.

  11. Deianira says:

I read “Fall” before reading the previous two books in the series; you won’t suffer from reading this one first, as each largely stands alone. While the hero’s suicide attempt (off-page; it occurred prior to this story) & depression are central to it, I found it a positive story overall & really enjoyed it – in fact, I reread it last month.

  12. DonnaMarie says:

Another thumbs up for both Strange Practice and Fall.

  13. Anna says:

I read the VIP series in reverse order, and they do stand alone pretty well. Managed is BY FAR my favorite. Something about Gabriel Scott just… Yum. I thought Idol & Fall were still well written, but I didn’t like either of them as much as Managed.

  14. GraceElizabeth says:

More love for Strange Practice and the sequel! It’s one of the only series that makes me laugh out loud. If you were ever an angsty teen (or adult) into gothic fiction then you’ll definitely want to check it out, but there are some mild body horror elements as @MaryK says.

  15. Michelle says:

    @Anna

    Same!

  16. Lara says:

I enjoyed Dreadful Company (sequel) more than I did Strange Practice, but since I 100% liked SP, that shouldn’t put anyone off. Any book that brings in Varney the Vampyre and makes him awkwardly in love is a winner to me.

Also, shallowly, I met Vivian Shaw and her wife at Balticon, and she is a cool blonde lesbian blonde villainess who almost killed a man with her glare when he interrupted her, and I have a crush.

  17. Katie says:

I don’t think this will last much longer, but as of now, Courtney Milan’s Brothers Sinister series box set is 2.99. Kindle for sure, I think other places too.

  18. EJ says:

I want to meet a man in a grocery store so badly. That is all I have ever wanted from the universe.

  19. Cathy Pegau says:

Another positive vote for Strange Practice. I enjoyed the characters and the idea of a “monster doctor” even though I’m more of a fan of monsters being monsters. I need to get another copy as my dog ate the first half. Seriously. She stopped right where I had paused in the book, so at least I didn’t miss anything.

I haven’t read the sequel yet, but it’s on my list. And I will keep it away from the dog.

Please be sure to share your opinion if you do read it, Amanda!

  20. Demi says:

Another thumbs up for “Daisy Jones and the Six” – I’m a few hours into the audiobook and if you like music history and kick-ass rock stars and female rockers and 70’s LA rock n’ roll…I could go on, but I’m sure you can tell I am DIGGING IT immensely.
@Poppy I keep having to remind myself it’s fiction, too!!!

  21. JennyOH says:

I LOVED Strange Practice! “The modern world, preferably London, but secretly with magic and shit” is my JAM and this is one of my favorites in the genre. I just saw a cover for a sequel the other day (not sure when/if published?), if anyone else, like me, is hoping to read more.
