  • Scandal Wears Satin

Scandal Wears Satin by Loretta Chase

Scandal Wears Satin by Loretta Chase is 99c! This is the second book in The Dressmakers series, and the first one is $1.99. Readers loved the heroine in this one, but felt that hero was..not great. If you’ve read this one, tell us your thoughts!

From the Journals of Sophia Noirot: A dress is a weapon. It must dazzle his eye, raise his temperature . . . and empty his purse.

A blue-eyed innocent on the outside and a shark on the inside, dressmaker Sophy Noirot could sell sand to Bedouins. Selling Maison Noirot’s beautiful designs to aristocratic ladies is a little harder, especially since a recent family scandal has made an enemy of one of society’s fashion leaders. Turning scandal to the shop’s advantage requires every iota of Sophy’s manipulative skills, leaving her little patience for big, reckless rakes like the Earl of Longmore. The gorgeous lummox can’t keep more than one idea in his head at a time, and his idea is taking off all of Sophy’s clothes.

But when Longmore’s sister, Noirot’s wealthiest, favorite customer, runs away, Sophy can’t let him bumble after her on his own. In hot pursuit with the one man who tempts her beyond reason, she finds desire has never slipped on so smoothly . . .

  • The Bone Witch

The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco

The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco is $1.99 at Amazon! This might be an expiring Kindle Daily Deal from this weekend, so nab this while you can. This YA fantasy has some Hades/Persephone vibes, which is definitely my catnip. Elyse also mentioned this one on a previous Hide Your Wallet.

A Publishers Weekly Most Anticipated Young Adult Book of Spring 2017!

In the captivating start to a new, darkly lyrical fantasy series for readers of Leigh Bardugo and Sabaa Tahir, Tea can raise the dead, but resurrection comes at a price…

Let me be clear: I never intended to raise my brother from his grave, though he may claim otherwise. If there’s anything I’ve learned from him in the years since, it’s that the dead hide truths as well as the living.

When Tea accidentally resurrects her brother from the dead, she learns she is different from the other witches in her family. Her gift for necromancy means that she’s a bone witch, a title that makes her feared and ostracized by her community. But Tea finds solace and guidance with an older, wiser bone witch, who takes Tea and her brother to another land for training.

In her new home, Tea puts all her energy into becoming an asha-one who can wield elemental magic. But dark forces are approaching quickly, and in the face of danger, Tea will have to overcome her obstacles…and make a powerful choice.

Memoirs of a Geisha meets The Name of the Wind in this brilliant new fantasy series by Rin Chupeco!

  • Hunted

    Hunted by Elizabeth Heiter

Hunted by Elizabeth Heiter is $2.99! Elyse says, “The first book in The Profiler series introduces us to Evelyn Baine, an FBI agent who hunts serial killers while trying to solve a mystery from her past. The suspense is creepy (think Criminal Minds), but Heiter adds a romantic subplot to balance it out. I love that Evelyn totally misses all the signals her hot Hostage Rescue Team member is giving her about how much he’s crushing on her.”

Terror stalks a small Virginia town.

FBI rising star, criminal profiler Evelyn Baine, knows how to think like a serial killer. But she’s never chased anyone like the Bakersville Burier, who hunts young women and displays them, half-buried, deep in the woods. As the body count climbs, Evelyn’s relentless pursuit of the killer puts her career – and her life – at risk. And the evil lurking in the Burier’s mind may be more than even she can unravel.

Terror is closer than she thinks.

The Bakersville Burier knows he’s got an FBI profiler on his trail. He knows who she is and where to find her. And he’s biding his time, because he’s planned a special punishment for Evelyn. She may have tracked other killers, but he vows to make this her last chase. This time it’s her turn to be hunted!

  • The Duke of Danger

The Duke of Danger by Darcy Burke

The Duke of Danger by Darcy Burke is 99c! This is the sixth book in The Untouchables series, but I believe all the books can stand on their own. This is an enemies to lovers romance with a marriage of convenience. It has a 4.2-star rating on Goodreads.

After killing his opponent in a duel, Lionel Maitland, Marquess of Axbridge, is known as the Duke of Danger. Tortured by guilt, he shields himself with a devil-may-care attitude. However, when he kills another man in another duel, he’s beyond redemption, even though it wasn’t his fault. He refuses to smear a dead man’s name, especially when he’s left behind a blameless widow who doesn’t deserve an even bigger scandal.

Widowed and destitute, Lady Emmaline Townsend must marry the man of her parents’ choosing or beg unsympathetic relatives for support. The only way out is to ask for help from the one man she’s sworn to hate, the man who owes her anything she asks, the man who killed her husband. They strike a devil’s bargain in which passion simmers just beneath the surface. But her dead husband’s transgressions come back to haunt them and threaten their chance at love.

The Bone Witch had so much potential but fell short and ended up being sort of boring, all things considered. I was disappointed by it.

  3. Ren Benton says:

I felt The Bone Witch got bogged down in lavish descriptions and everything “happened” right at the beginning and right at the end—but I have aphantasia and lavish descriptions are wasted space to me, so others may call that beautiful prose. It’s framed like The Name of the Wind, with the protagonist telling the story to someone in the “present” with periodic present-day interruptions. The story inside the frame has a beginning, middle, and end, so I wouldn’t call it a cliffhanger, but there’s an obviously eventful gap between past and present and some big action pending in the present-day that need to be filled in and concluded with another book, so don’t expect complete resolution.

I don’t recall a single Persephone/Hades vibe in this book, but maybe further in the series?

  4. Cristie says:

Undue Influence by Jenny Holiday an m/m retelling of Persuasion is 99 cents at Amazon right now.

  5. LML says:

    Oohh, thank you, DiscoDollyDeb.

  6. fairywine says:

The Bone Witch was so boring, slow, and totally uneventful but I could barely believe Rin Chupeco wrote it. Her take on a Sadako style ghost as a protagonist, The Girl from the Well, was fresh and creative, and really executed much better than I thought the concept possibly could’ve been. I seriously do not know what the hell happened here – it’s like a totally different author wrote this story.

    OKAY WHAT

I get that everyone has a different opinion, I do. But I have to stand up for my Romancelandia Hall of Famer Longmore here! The reason Scandal Wears Satin is not just my favorite Loretta Chase book, but my favorite romance novel period it’s just how satisfying the character arcs of both the hero and hero and are executed – one of the few novels where I love both members equally. And Longmore has an especially great character arc as far as personal growth goes. Chase really does an excellent job at gradually showing the layers he has. He’s not as book smart as some, but is always witty and far cleverer than he initially lets on, he acts carefree but really is a good man who just needs some purpose in life, and while he doesn’t take himself so seriously (blessedly) he always steps up when things really call for it. And Chase doesn’t neglect also showing his particular blind spots given to him as the natural result of his status as a wealthy aristocrat and as simply being a man in general of the time. Seeing Longmore open his eyes, confront his own perceptions, and actually GROW is so damn satisfying no matter how many times I have read and reread this book. He’s just a great guy in general and probably number one in my top three romance heroes list.

    ->>> end rant

Anyway, Scandal Wears Satin is AWESOME and I recc it to anyone who loves them some historical romance

  7. Maureen says:

@fairywine-I agree about Longmore! I read this book yesterday and I loved it. I thought Sophy and Longmore were wonderful pair, and I very much enjoyed his character. This was the first I read in the Dressmaker series, and I read the first one today where he was introduced-so out of order. I actually liked Longmore much more than the hero in the first book, Clevedon. I really liked the first book, but I thought Longmore and his personality were very appealing. Scandal Wears Satin was a much funnier book than I expected!

  8. Hayley says:

@fairywine and @Maureen, so glad to see the love for Scandal Wears Satin! Longmore’s realization/confession scene is one of my top 5 romance passages!
