Discussion Question: What Video Always Makes You Laugh?

There are some videos that always, without fail, no matter how many times I’ve seen them, make me laugh or at least give me that bubbly feeling of delight when I watch them again.

I figured you had some as well, so I figured, why not ask? What videos always make you laugh? I asked the crew here at SBTB HQ and now I’m a mess.

Amanda:

Amanda: If you aren’t watching Schitt’s Creek, you need to rectify that.

Elyse:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=rSfjS6M8dYY

Sarah: “Get him, Derry!”

Elyse: I lose it when the dog pees, every single time.

Sarah: I am now cry-laughing.

This one always gets me: Russell Howard, after announcing that the English accent was voted “sexiest” by some poll, attempting to prove that idea very wrong:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=5pKAzN4PT0Y

Two words: wheelie bins.

Carrie:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aF7dbjFHNz0

Sarah: Banana Head Fart Man? How is that not a movie?

What about you? What videos always make you laugh, every time?

A few guidelines, if you please: drop links in the comments, of course, but give us a bit of an intro into what it is, and why it makes you laugh?

Okay, I know that John Cleese has not aged well (I’m speaking personally/politically I have no opinions on his face), but I will never not laugh at the scene in “The Germans” episode of the Fawlty Towers where everything goes off the rails. I don’t know how well it sits on its own, b/c I know the episode so well, all I have to do is watch that part and I break out laughing.

I also love when Jason Statham first shows up in the field in SPY and goes off on this ridiculous rant about all the badass spy things he’s done. All his scenes are hilarious, but I felt this one really nailed how over the top spy movies are.

This is an outtake from the Carol Burnett Show. In the middle of sketch, the magnificent Tim Conway starts to ad lib & the rest of the cast tries -and fails- not to break scene.

  3. Jill Q. says:

    Ahhh, forgot links!

Best scene with Jason Statham in SPY (but really watch all of them). FYI, this does have bad language.

    Fawlty Towers “Don’t!Mention!The!War!”

  4. Emily C says:

@Amanda- huge second for Schitt’s Creek! If you’ve never tried the show give it a few episodes before pasing judgement. As I explained to a friend it’s a lot like Arrested Development but much more inclusive and with real character growth and development. Stick with it to Season 4 to experience two different performances of Tina Turner’s “Simply the Best” that will make you cry and laugh and fall in absolute love with the show.

My other rec is for the entire movie Clue. “Flames on the side of my head…” is classic but there are so many terrific lines it always makes me laugh.

The crowd from Whose Line Is It Anyway? always gets me laughing. This one is a fun clip from one of their live shows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqlBCEr_qb4

Most of what makes me laugh is British humour, not always appreciated here

I also love anything written by Victoria Wood. She collaborated with Julie Walters a lot. My favourite sketch is The Waitress, commonly known as Two Soups. Cannnot find a link to it but you can sometimes find her stuff on streaming sevices

Anything from Father Ted makes me laugh but I especially like this one. Poor Father Dougal. https://youtu.be/vh5kZ4uIUC0

  10. EJ says:

Also I don’t think it’s aged well and I’m not going to link to it and to be fair it’s a very very long video, but Wizard People Dear Reader still kills me. It’s an alternative narration/dialogue you can play while watching the first Harry Potter movie with the sound off.

Alanis Morisette’s version of My Humps by the Black Eyed Peas makes me cry with laughter every time.

I spend a not-insignificant amount of my time watching BTS’s Bangtan Bomb videos. I could probably name 20 just off the top of my head that make me laugh like crazy. But I think my favorite at the moment has to be to 21st Century Girl Halloween dance practice. I hope whoever had the idea to put Jungkook in that bunny costume got a promotion.

  13. DonnaMarie says:

I have no explanation for why, but the minute I read the question I thought of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0L6t0xh-Dc
The video quality is pretty shaggy, but it is from 1975. I haven’t seen it in a while, but damned if I haven’t watched it a couple times this morning & laughed every time. Pretty good for something I first watched 44 years ago. Geez, I saw this when it originally aired 45 YEARS ago. I am old.

If you want something that just makes me happy:

All of John Mulaney’s stand-up is hilarious. I can’t find most of my favorites of us (Horse in a Hospital, Street Smarts and his bit about majoring in English), but here’s The Salt and Pepper Diner:

  15. ShellyE says:

@Sabrina – THANK YOU! I somehow had missed that Alanis version of My Humps and I didn’t know how badly I needed it!!!! Loved. It!

@hng23 – Anything Tim Conway is gold! My favorite is the dentist scene!

  16. @SB Sarah says:

I CANNOT BREATHE at Alanis’ version of My Humps. How did I not know about this. Oh my gosh. Thank you, Sabrina!

Another bit that always makes me laugh: The Vicar of Dibley and “I can’t believe it’s not butter,” starring Dawn French and the late Emma Chambers:

  17. @SB Sarah says:

I can’t believe I forgot to add this one: the Muppets’ “Danny Boy”

  19. HeatherS says:

Randy Rainbow mixes pop music and show tunes and reworks the lyrics into political satire to criticize this dumpster fire of an administration. He’s the relief getting me through to 2020.

  20. DonnaMarie says:

Well, this has been a great way to waste a morning. Thank you everyone!

  21. Sabrina says:

I’m so glad others are loving the Alanis song. It gives me so much joy.

Here’s another of my favorites – Futurama’s parody of the Twilight Zone, The Scary Door:

I believe I first got this one from SBTB but it’s always worth a rerun when I just need some cute:

Trigger warning for anyone who hates spiders, but watching this critter dance to YMCA always makes me laugh:

And this is another version of Bad Lip Reading, known as Bad Translation, or What You Hear Is What You Get. By the time I get to the octopus I’m always in tears:

  23. mel burns says:

The Birdcage which is one of the funniest movies ever is on this afternoon, I’ve been flipping back and forth from Nadal beating the socks off Thiem. Monty Python I think wins though for being the funniest. “It’s just a flesh wound!”.
Absolutely Fabulous is very funny, if a bit dated and one of my favorite comedy skits is Gilda Radner and Bill Murray in on SNL: Lisa Loopner and the Norge man. Dan Aykroyd is hilarious as the refrigerator repairman with the kids snickering at the crack in his ass . There is a lot of classic stuff from 1970’s SNL.

A post about book bits that make us laugh would also be fun.

@SB Sarah: “Danny Boy” Muppet-style for the win. We, shameful people that we are, played this after my mom’s memorial service, after everyone else had gone home. I think it may have saved us that day.

  26. Aarya Marsden says:

Easy question. The Tom Holland performance of Rihanna’s Umbrella on Lip Sync Battle. I don’t know if it’s laugh out loud funny, but I feel so much delight and joy every time I watch it. It’s hypnotizing and the reason why he’s my #1 celebrity crush.

This video always cracks me up, because of the unexpected turn it takes. Warning for language. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GI6CfKcMhjY

    So silly!

  29. JenM says:

@DonnaMarie, thank you from the bottom of my heart for the Uptown Funk video. It brought me right back to my childhood when my mom and I used to watch all of the old Hollywood musicals together.

Thanks to everyone who posted a link. Smiles have been in short supply around our house lately so it was sorely needed.

  30. Maureen says:

So today, I got caught in a youtube loop-Kids Try…

Little kids try all kinds of different foods, and it is AWESOME! I LMAO most of the afternoon. I don’t know how to do links, sorry! These kids are so funny, and so game to try all different kinds of food. One of my favorites is where they are trying foods from the Great Depression-they loved a cooked onion stuffed with peanut butter! The kids are so adorable!

Thank you for this discussion! I so needed a good laugh today.

  32. Lisa W. says:

Water War between Jimmy Fallon and guest Jake Gyllenhaal on the Tonight Show! This was back in 2014 but it’s DEFINITELY worth a re-visit. It never fails to make me laugh because they are cracking up through the whole game. 🙂
