Diablo Lake: Protected

RECOMMENDED: Diablo Lake: Protected by Lauren Dane is $1.99 at Amazon and $2.49 elsewhere! Sarah read this one and gave it a B+, though she definitely suggest reading the first book, Moonstruck, before this one:
I don’t think I can communicate how much I found this story inspiring and comforting, not without spoiling some major plot points and ruining the joy of discovering the intricate connections between the characters.
New York Times bestselling author Lauren Dane welcomes you back to Diablo Lake, Tennessee: a town founded by witches, governed by werewolves and full of secrets
Tensions are building in Diablo Lake as the two main rival Packs vie for control, and the town is divided along lines of Pack loyalty. Aimee Benton and Mac Pembry are on opposite sides and he seems to find excuses to spar with her daily. He’s infuriating—not to mention charming, gorgeous and oh-so-lickable.
Mac can’t resist pushing Aimee’s buttons. She’s always been incredibly sexy, and the wolf in him craves a female with fire in her belly. When a heated argument ends with a sizzling kiss and Mac gets a taste of her, he craves more—and she can’t seem to get enough of him, either. The forbidden nature of their attraction stokes their desires until they’re secretly hooking up whenever they can.
But then Mac’s clan goes too far, and Aimee shuts him out. She’s hurt and angry—but that’s nothing compared to the rage Mac is feeling toward his own Pack. A fight is brewing that will plunge the whole town into chaos, and someone will have to cross Pack lines to keep the town’s fragile peace from breaking apart for good.

The Next Best Bride by Kelly McClymer is 99c at Amazon! It’s not price-matched, which could mean it’s expiring soon. This is the fifth book in the Once Upon a Wedding Series, though it can be read on its own. It was also originally published in 2002 with a different cover. This historical romance has a marriage of convenience. Here’s a fantastic Goodreads review:
Honestly this felt like mostly just a lot of sex scenes strung together by an absurd plot that didn’t even make that much sense…
This USA Today Bestseller is the tale of an unrepentant rake’s marriage of convenience turned upside down when twins switch place at the altar.
When his fiance informs him that she can’t go through with their marriage of convenience Rand Mallon, Earl of Dalby, agrees to marry her twin sister in her place. After all, what difference does it make to him, an unrepentant rake in need only of a legitimate heir?
Helena Fenster looks forward to the earl’s promise to allow her her freedom once he has his heir. She draws the line at giving in to his desire to make sure their attempts for an heir bring her pleasure. Neither one of them can afford to complicate their practical plan with the dangerous fall into true love.

Miss Grimsley’s Oxford Career by Carla Kelly is $2.99 at Amazon! For some reason, it’s been removed from previous retailers. Maybe because it’s now in KU. This book has a 3.8-star average on Goodreads, and is a classic Signet Regency republished in digital format. Hold on to your catnip alarms: the heroine dresses in her brother’s robes to attend Oxford in secret.
School For Scandal
Beautiful and brilliant Miss Ellen Grimsley considered it a scandal and a shame that she as a female could not attend Oxford, while a dashing dunderhead like her older brother Gordon could. On the other hand, society would reel in a scandalized shock at the idea of Ellen donning Gordon’s student robes to do his work.
But an even greater scandal loomed when a handsome lord in humble scholar’s disguise learned Ellen’s secret and set out to give her a most advanced lesson in love…

Rogue’s Pawn by Jeffe Kennedy is $2.49 at Amazon and $3.99 elsewhere! This is the first book in an erotic fantasy romance series and you can grab all three books for less than $7. The heroine is a scientist and the cover model for the hero looks like Keanu Reeves, which is a good thing in my book. However, some readers didn’t feel the world building worked very well in this one.
This is no fairy tale…
Haunted by nightmares of a black dog, sick to death of my mind-numbing career and heart-numbing fiance, I impulsively walked out of my life–and fell into Faerie. Terrified, fascinated, I discover I possess a power I can’t control: my wishes come true. After an all-too-real attack by the animal from my dreams, I wake to find myself the captive of the seductive and ruthless fae lord Rogue. In return for my rescue, he demands an extravagant price–my firstborn child, which he intends to sire himself…
With no hope of escaping this world, I must learn to harness my magic and build a new life despite the perils–including my own inexplicable and debilitating desire for Rogue. I swear I will never submit to his demands, no matter what erotic torment he subjects me to…

Bird Box by Josh Malerman is $1.99 at multiple stores. One of the best books I read last year and the most satisfying horror I’ve read in a decade, at least.
The original Tartine cookbook is $3.99 at multiple stores. Table of contents up front so you can see if you’re interested in what’s inside.
The *hardcover* of Rose Levy Berenbaum’s Rose’s Baking Basics: 100 Essential Recipes is down to $10.58 at Amazon. (The ebook is holding steady at $19.99, which is why I drag paper into customarily digital mentions.)
I wish Dane would add to the Diablo Lake series. I totally enjoyed both MOONSTRUCK (the 1st book) and PROTECTED in the audio versions and I keep an ever-hopeful lookout for new additions.
Last night I received a $1.99 price alert from Ereaderiq for Tessa Dare’s Do You Want to Start a Scandal, but when I saw it this morning and checked Amazon, the price was back to $7.99. Does anyone know if Amazon does brief random sales? It’s not a big deal, but I’m curious if it was a mistake or the book really did drop in price at 10PM for a few hours. Thanks.
Miss Grimsley’s Oxford Career is wonderful. It’s one of my favorite books.
@Kay – Do You Want to Start a Scandal was one of Amazon’s Kindle Daily Deals yesterday, so it was on sale for 1.99 all day. Ereaderiq says they did a price check 15 hours ago and still displays the sale price. If they only do once-daily checks at 10pm Eastern, then a daily deal sale would indeed look like a blip at Amazon.
Kay yes, if the publisher wants to do a flash sale or it’s a kindle daily deal which the Dare book was for Saturday only at Amazon.
The Hotel at the conor Bitter and Sweet buy Jamie Ford is $2.99
The Game of Kings by Dorothy Dunnett is 1.99 at Amazon. This is the first of 6 books set in Scotland (and other places) during the childhood of Mary Queen of Scots. One of my favorite historical fiction series.
Thank you, @Deborah and @jcp! ‘Do You Want to Start a Scandal’ is one of the books I’ve been waiting to go on sale for a while, so I’m sorry I missed it. I stopped doing my daily checks at Amazon because I signed up for Ereaderiq. They usually send alerts in the afternoon, but a 10PM alert is too late for me and I missed it. Good to know – I’ll start doing my daily checks again since the sale didn’t show up in my daily email from BookBub either.
eReaderiq used to check prices more frequently during the day and would catch the daily kindle deals sooner, but now they often don’t catch them send the notification email until late afternoon or evening. I caught a deal on that book awhile back so if you wait, I’m sure it will show up again.
@Ren Benton: I’m using Beranbaum’s CAKE BIBLE to make two cakes for my niece’s birthday party on Saturday. I love that she uses measurements and weights for all ingredients, but also how long an item can remain at room temperature, refrigerated or frozen. She is a miracle worker. Also, in the case of cookbooks, paper is better.
@Kay: eReaderIQ operates in England. AFAIK, they send messages as soon as a book goes on sale, but you might want to make sure you follow their link when you get it. It’s so disappointing to miss the book you’ve been waiting for and I still check my wishlist daily even though eReader checks for me. I have no life.
I should add re eReader: Several years ago, Amazon changed their affiliate program and essentially banned any remuneration for this entity and others, US and UK. I don’t know what other work they do now, but eReader relies on donations to continue the notifications. No one is obligated to donate and they will keep track of sales for you no matter what, it just seemed like the right time to mention that.
It was appalling what Amazon did to many affiliates–who could make a living from links to anything purchased through them, not just Kindle books–so perhaps they have had to scale back on their notifications.
Thanks, @JenM and @Darlynne. I didn’t do any research about EReaderiq. When it was recommended here, I just signed up and added authors to track, but I did wonder how they made money. It’s a shame Amazon has changed the affiliate program.
@Ren Benton: I’m a throwback that still buys actual paper cookbooks, so keep those recommendations coming, please & thank you!
Um wow. I have read SO MANY of Jeffe Kennedy’s books and have somehow never noticed this series? I bought it because it was so cheap but I’m nervous about reading something outside of her Twelve Kingdoms universe. I tried her Lonen’s War and was not impressed and it was extra painful since I love pretty much everything in the Twelve Kingdoms/Dasnaria.
I have an off and on relationship with Lauren Dane but just read the reviews for this series and am totally sold. Paranormal used to be my jam but aside from a few ongoing series I haven’t read anything new in awhile. Bonus they are both on Hoopla in audio!
