  • Enchantress of Numbers

Enchantress of Numbers by Jennifer Chiaverini

The Enchantress of Numbers by Jennifer Chiaverini is $1.99! Carrie read this nonfiction book and gave it a B:

As far as I can tell, it’s quite faithful to the events of Ada’s life and the relationship between her and her mother. However, as the book progresses, it starts to skim over her vices and dwell on Ada as a good wife and mother who wants to do math but also do her motherly duties. The story ends with nice emotional resolutions, but for those who are familiar with her whole biography it cuts off suddenly.

The only legitimate child of Lord Byron, the most brilliant, revered, and scandalous of the Romantic poets, Ada was destined for fame long before her birth. Estranged from Ada’s father, who was infamously “mad, bad, and dangerous to know,” Ada’s mathematician mother is determined to save her only child from her perilous Byron heritage. Banishing fairy tales and make-believe from the nursery, Ada’s mother provides her daughter with a rigorous education grounded in mathematics and science. Any troubling spark of imagination—or worse yet, passion or poetry—is promptly extinguished. Or so her mother believes.

When Ada is introduced into London society as a highly eligible young heiress, she at last discovers the intellectual and social circles she has craved all her life. Little does she realize that her delightful new friendship with inventor Charles Babbage—brilliant, charming, and occasionally curmudgeonly—will shape her destiny. Intrigued by the prototype of his first calculating machine, the Difference Engine, and enthralled by the plans for his even more advanced Analytical Engine, Ada resolves to help Babbage realize his extraordinary vision, unique in her understanding of how his invention could transform the world. All the while, she passionately studies mathematics—ignoring skeptics who consider it an unusual, even unhealthy pursuit for a woman—falls in love, discovers the shocking secrets behind her parents’ estrangement, and comes to terms with the unquenchable fire of her imagination.

  • Pleasure Unbound

    Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione

Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione is 99c! This is the first book in the Demonica series, which came out back in 2008. I loved this series when I was in my early college. The second one in the series is my fave, but I’m unsure of this paranormal romance series holds up.

In a place where ecstasy can cost you your life . . .

She’s a demon-slayer who hungers for sensual pleasure-but fears it will always be denied her. Until Tayla Mancuso lands in a hospital run by demons in disguise, and the head doctor, Eidolon, makes her body burn with unslakable desire. But to prove her ultimate loyalty to her peers, she must betray the surgeon who saved her life.

Two lovers will dare to risk all.

Eidolon cannot resist this fiery, dangerous woman who fills him with both rage and passion. Not only is she his avowed enemy, but she could very well be the hunter who has been preying upon his people. Torn between his need for the truth and his quest to find his perfect mate before a horrific transformation claims him forever, Eidolon will dare the unthinkable-and let Tayla possess him, body and soul . . .

  • A Promise of More

A Promise of More by Bronwen Evans

A Promise of More by Bronwen Evans is $1.99! This is book two in the Disgraced Lords series and features a marriage of convenience and a heroine out for revenge. Fans of the first book in this series were particularly excited for this hero’s book; however, some are divided on whether it delivered. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

When Beatrice Hennessey sets out to confront Lord Coldhurst, the notorious rogue who killed her brother in a duel, her intent is to save her family from destitution. She’s determined to blackmail the man into a loveless marriage. She’ll make the wealthy Lord Coldhurst pay for the rest of his life. But while greeting his ship, Beatrice takes a tumble into the Thames—only to be fished out by a pair of strong masculine arms that tempt her to stay locked in their heated embrace forever. That is, until she realizes those arms belong to Sebastian Hawkestone, Lord Coldhurst himself.

The little drowned mermaid has an interesting proposition indeed; one that Sebastian is surprised to find quite agreeable. Although he’s had women more beautiful, she is pleasing to the eye, and besides, it’s time he fathered an heir. Beatrice promises to be the ideal wife; a woman who hates him with an all-consuming passion is far too sensible to expect romance. However, it isn’t long before Sebastian’s plan for a marriage of convenience unravels, and he’s caught up in the exhilarating undertow of seduction.

  • The Sparrow Sisters

The Sparrow Sisters by Ellen Herrick

The Sparrow Sisters by Ellen Herrick is $1.99! The book’s description compares this to Practical Magic, which gets my attention. So I suppose you can expect sisters, magical realism, and a hint of romance. However, there were readers who felt disappointed with the promises made by that comparison.

With echoes of the alchemy of Practical Magic, the lushness of Saving CeeCee Honeycutt, and the darkly joyful wickedness of the Witches of East End, Ellen Herrick’s debut novel spins an enchanting love story about a place where magic whispers just beneath the surface and almost anything is possible, if you aren’t afraid to listen

The Sparrow Sisters are as tightly woven into the seaside New England town of Granite Point as the wild sweet peas that climb the stone walls along the harbor. Sorrel, Nettie and Patience are as colorful as the beach plums on the dunes and as mysterious as the fog that rolls into town at dusk.

Patience is the town healer and when a new doctor settles into Granite Point he brings with him a mystery so compelling that Patience is drawn to love him, even as she struggles to mend him. But when Patience Sparrow’s herbs and tinctures are believed to be implicated in a local tragedy, Granite Point is consumed by a long-buried fear—and its three hundred year old history resurfaces as a modern day witch-hunt threatens. The plants and flowers, fruit trees and high hedges begin to wither and die, and the entire town begins to fail; fishermen return to the harbor empty-handed, and blight descends on the old elms that line the lanes.

It seems as if Patience and her town are lost until the women of Granite Point band together to save the Sparrow. As they gather, drawing strength from each other, will they be able to turn the tide and return life to Granite Point?

The Sparrow Sisters is a beautiful, haunting, and thoroughly mesmerizing novel that will capture your imagination.

  1. Batman says:

The heroine’s neck on the cover of “A Promise of More” looks SO uncomfortable.

  2. LauraL says:

I really enjoyed The Sparrow Sisters, but have to say I liked the second book around the sisters, The Forbidden Garden, better. One of the sisters, Sorrel, is hired to revive a garden on an English estate. Hoping this sale means Nettie’s story is on the way.

  3. CelineB says:

A Curse So Dark and Lovely by Brigid Kemmerer is $1.99 at Amazon (I haven’t checked the other sites). It’s a contemporary Beauty and the Beast retelling that got an A- review by Carrie S on here (https://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/reviews/a-curse-so-dark-and-lonely-by-brigid-kemmerer/).

Also the first 3 books in the Rockton series by Kelley Armstrong are $2.99 at Amazon as well. I’m about halfway through the first book and am enjoying it. It’s more mystery than romance, but I remember seeing a commenter in the most recent Whatcha Reading post mentioning that it develops a satisfying romance in the background.

  4. Celine B says:

Sorry, that title read A Curse So Dark and Lonely not Lovely!

  5. Celine B says:

*Should read. I’m obviously having a great typing day.

  6. Darlynne says:

@Celine B: I may have been one of the fans talking about the Rockton series, or at least that was me in my head. I’ve finished book 2 and, honestly, have to force myself to not immediately start bingeing the rest. The crimes are fascinating because of the Yukon environment; the characters are completely unreliable because of what brought them there, which makes them ten times as fascinating. Armstrong has built an astonishing world and my heart belongs to Casey, Eric and Will.
