Help A Bitch Out

HaBO: Heroine Rescues Pregnant Dog

This HaBO comes from Stephanie, who has been searching for ages for this book:

Here’s a HaBO that’s bugged me for years:

The novel’s main character moves to a small town on an island or near the ocean.

She rescues a dog that turns out to be pregnant and the veterinarian asks if she wants him to abort the puppies. She says no and I think ends up dating the vet, who (I think) has a kid.

I’m going to assume this is a contemporary romance or possibly women’s fiction, but I’m not certain.

I just have to comment on how utterly appropriate “HELP A BITCH OUT” is when it comes to this book.

When I see vetranarian, I think Jill Shalvis or Erin McCarthy, but I haven’t read enough books in either series to know if it’s one of theirs.

  3. Lara says:

It sounds vaguely like “My Sunshine”, by Catherine Anderson, which has a vet hero and a dog who has a risky pregnancy but eventually gives birth to a huge litter. The hero and heroine bond over lots of hand-feeding and late nights with tiny weak puppies. I don’t *think* it’s what Stephanie is looking for, but you never know.

Fair warning that the heroine of My Sunshine has mild brain damage/speech and visual comprehension issues due to an accident, and this is painted as a good thing because it’s made her plucky and adorably whimsical, and this plot device may utterly enrage some readers (like me).

    I’m curious !

The combination of dogs and small (seaside) towns makes me think of Kristan Higgins but I don’t know if she wrote this exact plot.

This sounds like one of Susan Wiggs’ books but I’m not coming up with a title. Maybe one of the Lakeshore Chronicles?

  7. Katie Wilson says:

Debbie Burns has a book, Sit, Stay,Love with a pregnant dog but the rest of the plot is different. I’ll keep looking.
