When a Marquess Loves a Woman

RECOMMENDED: When a Marquess Loves a Woman by Vivienne Lorret is $1.99! Elyse read this historical romance and gave it an A- and while this is the third book in a series, it can be read as a standalone:
If you like enemies-to-lovers romance, then you probably want to read When a Marquess Loves a Woman. It’s got all my prerequisites for a good Regency romance–loads of sexual tension, a heroine who owns her shit, and epic sass-battles. Also canoodling in libraries. Also a stock market crash. There’s a lot going on in this book.
As a young, penniless gentleman, Maxwell Harwick knew he had little to offer Juliet White—the most beautiful debutante of the season—except his love, and one thoroughly scandalous kiss. But when they were discovered in a compromising position, a nearly ruined Juliet fled into the arms of a rich, older lord… taking Max’s heart with her.
Now a widow, Lady Juliet Granworth intends to use the fortune she inherited from her odious husband to build a new life in London. Five years have passed, but she’s never forgotten Max… or his soul-searing kiss. Yet it’s clear the newly-minted Marquess of Thayne has not forgiven her—after all, the infuriating man can barely stand the sight of her. But Juliet has endured far too much to give up without a fight and if it’s a battle of wills he wants, it’s a battle he’ll get.
He hates her for breaking his heart. She detests him for destroying her future. But beneath all the loathing simmers an intoxicating passion that neither can ignore… and the harder they resist, the harder they will inevitably fall.

Three Little Words by Jenny Holiday is 99c! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and it’s being price-matched. This is a contemporary road trip romance. Hello, catnip! Readers also say they liked the banter and differences between the Canadian heroine and Southern hero. However, others wished they felt more of a connection to the main characters.
In this laugh-out-loud romantic comedy, USA Today bestselling author Jenny Holiday proves that opposites don’t just attract, they ignite.
Gia Gallo is officially in bridesmaid hell. Stranded in New York with her best friend’s wedding dress, Gia has six days to make it to Florida in time for the ceremony. And oh-so-charming best man Bennett Buchanan has taken the last available rental car. Looks like she’s in for one long road trip with the sexiest – and most irritating – Southern gentleman she’s ever met…
Bennett’s pretty sure that if there was ever a woman to break his “no flings” rule, Gia would be it. Sure, she’s stubborn. She’s also funny, smart, and the attraction between them is getting hotter with every state line they cross. While Bennett doesn’t do casual, Gia doesn’t do “relationships.” But if they break the rules, this unlikely pair might discover that their impromptu road trip could turn out to be the best ride of their lives.

The Peach Keeper by Sarah Addison Allen is $2.99! I haven’t been shy about my love of Allen’s books. They’re a mix of fiction, magical realism, and romance. This one isn’t my favorite, but it’s also like trying to rank ice cream. Most of the flavors are good, regardless of where they end of on the list.
It’s the dubious distinction of thirty-year-old Willa Jackson to hail from a fine old Southern family of means that met with financial ruin generations ago. The Blue Ridge Madam—built by Willa’s great-great-grandfather and once the finest home in Walls of Water, North Carolina—has stood for years as a monument to misfortune and scandal. Willa has lately learned that an old classmate—socialite Paxton Osgood—has restored the house to its former glory, with plans to turn it into a top-flight inn. But when a skeleton is found buried beneath the property’s lone peach tree, long-kept secrets come to light, accompanied by a spate of strange occurrences throughout the town. Thrust together in an unlikely friendship, united by a full-blooded mystery, Willa and Paxton must confront the passions and betrayals that once bound their families—and uncover the truths that have transcended time to touch the hearts of the living.

Love Potions by Michelle M. Pillow is 99c! This is the first book in the contemporary paranormal romance Warlocks MacGregor series. I’m incredibly curious about this one and its setup. However, the page count I see on Amazon and Goodreads lists it at nearly 700 pages, which gives me pause.
A little magickal mischief never hurt anyone…
Erik MacGregor is from a clan of ancient Scottish warlocks. He isn’t looking for love. After centuries, it’s not even a consideration…until he moves in next door to Lydia Barratt. It’s clear that the shy beauty wants nothing to do with him, but he’s drawn to her and determined to win her over.
The last thing Lydia Barratt needs is a demanding Scottish man meddling in her private life. Just because he’s gorgeous and totally rocks a kilt doesn’t mean she’s going to fall for his seductive manner.
But Erik won’t give up and just as Lydia lets her guard down, his sister decides to get involved. Her little love potion prank goes terribly wrong, making Lydia the target of his sudden embarrassingly obsessive behavior. They’ll have to find a way to pull Erik out of the spell fast when it becomes clear that Lydia has more than a lovesick warlock to worry about.
Warning: Contains yummy, hot, mischievous MacGregors who may or may not be wielding love potion magick in an effort to prank their older brother, and who are almost certainly up to no good on their quest to find true love.

The paperback of Love Potions is listed at 386 pages. Since it’s only 18 chapters and the 10% sample gets into Chapter 2, I would guess the ebook inflation is due to teaser chapters of all her other books at the end (not in KU, so not a stuffing offense).
I’m beginning to get the impression that getting a title must be a rite of passage for every regency hero only after inheriting which can they get an HEA. Even if they meet the heroine years ago, they can only get together after the title has been bestowed and not a minute before.
Dangerous by Amanda Quick is $1.99 at Amazon and B&N.
Some of her other old titles (Mischief, Scandal, Desire, Deception) are $4.99. I’m not sure if that’s a temporary sale or the regular price.
For anyone who has read it, does the situation in three little words make sense? Six days seems like plenty of time to get from NY to Miami (Google says it’s a twenty hour drive, there are several NY area airports. There are trains. There’s Greyhound). Resolving the issue ought to be trivial.
@MsCellanie – There’s a huge snowstorm all across the east coast, which is what makes the trip difficult (no flights, hard to get a rental car, hard to drive even if you can rent a car, etc.)
I love love love Jenny Holiday’s Bridesmaids series. The romance aspects of each one are all great, but the best part really is the friendships between the women and the way they support each other. So good.
Thanks to Amanda ‘s keeper shelf squee, I devoured Sarah Addison Allen and have even re-read. Now I just wish there was more… I liked Peach, but agree it is not in the 99%tile. One of its twists, I loved, but the other had some issues, IMO. Still an enjoyable read, totally recommend. (thanks, again, SBTB)
Are there any romances that really drive home what it means for the heroine to be “ruined?” Like, have your entire future, your friends, your family, your opportunity to make a good match that will guarantee financial stability for you and your inevitable brood of children because there is no birth control, all of that gone, because of a tiny indiscretion? Your life is literally RUINED.
I get really pissed at heroes who don’t take that very, very seriously.
@EJ, this would be a good Rec League topic. The heroine in Sherry Thomas’s A Study in Scarlet (or similar title) goes through a gauntlet of trials as she learns that a “ruined” girl can’t rent a room, deposit money in the bank, or any of the basic requirements of living. It’s a good book, but not a romance (a gender-flipped Sherlock Holmes, to be precise!).
Oooh, I’m gonna check out The Peach Keeper. I really liked Garden Spells (The Sugar Queen was just OK).
@EJ: One that I recall off the top of my head is INDISCREET by Mary Balogh.
@JoS
Indiscreet recently rocked my world.
Just recommending that everyone click through and read Elyse’s review of “When a Marquess Loves a Woman,” including the tags and comments. So great. (The book is good too.)
