  • Burn for Me

Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews

RECOMMENDEDBurn for Me by Ilona Andrews is $1.99! Burn for Me is the first book in the Hidden Legacy series, and is an urban fantasy/billionaire romance with magic and suspense. We had a great guest squee on the entire series and I can definitely confirm the books are amazing! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews launches a brand-new Hidden Legacy series, in which one woman must place her trust in a seductive, dangerous man who sets off an even more dangerous desire . . .

Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile situation. Nevada isn’t sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire.

Then she’s kidnapped by Connor “Mad” Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run and wanting to surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.

Rogan’s after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she’s getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.

  • The Tethered Mage

The Tethered Mage by Melissa Caruso

The Tethered Mage by Melissa Caruso is $2.99! This is the first book in the Swords and Fire series. Some people have shelved this as YA fantasy on Goodreads, while the second book in the series isn’t shelved as YA. I don’t know if it’s YA or not, sooo…if you’ve read this one, let me know! I bought this one when it was previously on sale, but haven’t read it just yet.

CONTROL THE MAGIC, CONTROL THE WORLD

In the Raverran Empire, magic is scarce and those born with power are strictly controlled — taken as children and conscripted into the Falcon Army. Zaira has lived her life on the streets to avoid this fate, hiding her mage-mark and thieving to survive. But hers is a rare and dangerous magic, one that threatens the entire empire.

Lady Amalia Cornaro was never meant to be a Falconer. Heiress and scholar, she was born into a treacherous world of political machinations.

But fate has bound the heir and the mage. And as war looms on the horizon, a single spark could turn their city into a pyre.

The Tethered Mage is the first novel in a spellbinding new fantasy series.

  • Last Night with the Earl

Last Night with the Earl by Kelly Bowen

Last Night with the Earl by Kelly Bowen is $1.99! This is the second book in the Devils of Dover series, but can be read as a standalone. Some readers didn’t like how quickly the hero overcame his reclusive nature. However, others loved the emotional threads within the romance.

After Waterloo, Eli Dawes, Earl of Rivers, was presumed dead-and would have happily stayed that way. He’s no longer the reckless young man he once was, and only half as pretty. All he wants is to hide his scars away in his country home. But when he returns home and tries to sneak into his old bedroom in the middle of the night, he’s shocked to find someone already there.

Rose Hayward remembers Eli as an arrogant rake who helped her late fiancé betray her. Finding him stealing into the house currently rented by Haverhall School for Young Ladies doesn’t correct her impression. Her only thought is to get him to leave immediately. Yet the tension between them is electric, and her painter’s eye can’t help but admire him, scars and all. He might be back from the dead, but now Rose will do anything to make him feel truly alive.

  • The Charm School

The Charm School by Susan Wiggs

The Charm School by Susan Wiggs is $1.99! This historical was originally published in 1999, and is about an awkward, shy young woman who sneaks aboard a ship bound for Rio (as you do). When the crew notice the attraction between her and the captain, they begin tutoring her in the the finer arts of being a confident young lady (yes way). This book has a much-loved Ugly Duckling storyline, and a 3.9-star average on GR.

An awkward misfit in an accomplished Boston family, Isadora Peabody yearns to escape her social isolation and sneaks aboard the Silver Swan, bound for Rio, leaving it all behind.

Ryan Calhoun, too, had a good family name. But he’d purposely walked away from everything it afforded him. Driven by his quest to right an old wrong, the fiery, temperamental sea captain barely registers the meek young woman who comes aboard his ship.

To the Swan’s motley crew, the tides of attraction clearly flow between the two. Teaching her the charms of a lady, they hope to build the confidence she needs to attract not only their lonely captain’s attention, but his heart, as well. For everyone knows the greatest charms are not those of the formal lady, but rather the possibilities of a new world built on love.

    N. K. Jemisin’s Dreamblood Duology is $5.99.

The Matrimonial Advertisement by Mimi Matthews is $1.49.

  2. Empress of Blandings says:

KJ Charles’s Any Old Diamonds is 99p during April (don’t know about outside the UK, sorry). Amazon at the moment, and other stores to follow, apparently.

Her books are among my comfort reads at the moment, and I am really appreciating them right now.

  3. Jiobal says:

The Thethered Mage is fabulous – an Alternative Renaissance Florence with X-men. The first one might qualify as YA (which isn’t my favourite), the second has the main characters grown up a little more. It also features one of my least liked tropes, the love triangle, while the first one is very light on romance and focusses on the relationship between the two female protagonists. Still, I’d recommened both and will read the third.

  4. Hope says:

I’ve been trying to get through the Tethered Mage for an eternity. It is so, so, so YA. It makes me sad because if these people were adults it would be an interesting story. The whole time I’m reading it, I’m wishing it was from the heroine’s mother’s POV.

  5. Kim says:

The Charm School sounds like so much yes, and not just because I, too, would love nothing more than to board a ship for Rio right about now…

  6. MsCellanie says:

I found Charm School problematic. Especially around race – which isn’t uncommon in historicals set in the US, but as I remember, this had other issues too.

It is an interesting premise, but i don’t think the execution has aged well.

  7. Ren Benton says:

THE MODEL BAKERY COOKBOOK is a $3.99 monthly deal. I got it digitally a while ago to try and then bought the hardback because I prefer print versions of cookbooks I’ll use a lot. I make the English muffins and croissants frequently, and I go off the rails and use the schnecken dough for all kinds of side projects. Maybe not great for beginners, but if you’re a reasonably skilled baker or learning and like a challenge, I highly recommend.

  8. Jess says:

I haven’t read The Tethered Mage, but from some Amazon reviews it does seem like the premise of the first book bothered some folks (pale-skinned young noblewoman “tethers” a darker-skinned orphan waif). I can’t speak to the execution, but the first book does appear to be entirely from the noblewoman’s POV. It does seem like an interesting premise in theory, but if anyone might be bothered by it–here’s some advance warning.

  9. Mary says:

I liked The Tethered Mage and it’s sequel. It’s been a while but I’d agree it’s YA verging on NA in the sequel and that I’d rather read about the mother (she is one of the few characters I can clearly recall right now). I also agree about the problematic aspect of the races as mentioned above. I do recall the mage (the orphaned WOC) clearly calling everyone and anyone out on this, but with fantasy I always have the feeling that the author could just … not have done that. I really liked Zaira though, she was a great character.

  10. denise says:

I really enjoyed Last Night with the Earl

  11. Dorothea says:

I went to click on The Charm School, and found I already own it. Ah well, at least I am consistent.

  12. LauraL says:

I also enjoyed Last Night with the Earl and am looking forward to Kelly Bowen’s next book coming out at the end of May.

I am tempted to re-read The Charm School as Susan Wiggs was a favorite author back in the day, but also wonder how the story holds up over 20 years.

  13. JoS says:

I’m interested to know what was problematic about the YA elements in The Tethered Mage. Was it that it turned out to be YA when it didn’t advertise itself to be so, the problem, or was there another issue?
