  • The Widows of Malabar Hill

The Widows of Malabar Hill by Sujata Massey

The Widows of Malabar Hill by Sujata Massey is $1.99! It’s a Kindle Daily Deal today, and the deals feature some romances as well. This is a mystery set in 1920s Bombay. Carrie read this one and gave it a B:

It’s not a romance. Romance does not go well for the main characters. However, it’s a very good female-centered historical mystery.

1920s India: Perveen Mistry, Bombay’s first female lawyer, is investigating a suspicious will on behalf of three Muslim widows living in full purdah when the case takes a turn toward the murderous. The author of the Agatha and Macavity Award-winning Rei Shimura novels brings us an atmospheric new historical mystery with a captivating heroine.

Inspired in part by the woman who made history as India’s first female attorney, The Widows of Malabar Hill is a richly wrought story of multicultural 1920s Bombay as well as the debut of a sharp and promising new sleuth.

Perveen Mistry, the daughter of a respected Zoroastrian family, has just joined her father’s law firm, becoming one of the first female lawyers in India. Armed with a legal education from Oxford, Perveen also has a tragic personal history that makes women’s legal rights especially important to her.

Mistry Law has been appointed to execute the will of Mr. Omar Farid, a wealthy Muslim mill owner who has left three widows behind. But as Perveen examines the paperwork, she notices something strange: all three of the wives have signed over their full inheritance to a charity. What will they live on? Perveen is suspicious, especially since one of the widows has signed her form with an X—meaning she probably couldn’t even read the document. The Farid widows live in full purdah—in strict seclusion, never leaving the women’s quarters or speaking to any men. Are they being taken advantage of by an unscrupulous guardian? Perveen tries to investigate, and realizes her instincts were correct when tensions escalate to murder. Now it is her responsibility to figure out what really happened on Malabar Hill, and to ensure that no innocent women or children are
    in further danger.

  • The Wayward Bride

The Wayward Bride by Anna Bradley

The Wayward Bride by Anna Bradley is 99c! This is the first book in the Besotted Scots historical romance series. According to Goodreads, this features a main M/F romance and a second M/M romance. When having two intertwined romances at once, one can outshine the other, and that seems to be the case here.

In only six weeks, Isla Ramsey is due to marry Henry Northrup, the sixth Earl of Sydney. But she remains haunted by memories of the dashing Hugh Courtney, the Marquess Pierce. The handsome aristocrat had hinted at forever and then tossed her aside, leaving Isla with few viable options. Now, as she awaits her new fiancé’s arrival from London, she rides her horse past Hugh’s estate at Hazelwood every day, pining for a man who was never truly hers.

Hugh Courtney may have left Isla’s life, but he can’t erase her from his thoughts. When he rescues her from a sudden snowstorm, they are forced to take shelter together at his private estate. In such close quarters there is no escaping each other. Yet no man wants a reckless wife—or a woman promised to another. As fate draws Isla further into his world, Hugh vows to keep her out of his bedchamber. However, some vows are meant to be broken.

When Henry Northrup, Lord Sydney sees Lucas Dean for the first time, he thinks the devastating redhead is the result of a serious head injury and his fevered imagination. But when Sydney regains consciousness after a carriage accident, he discovers Lucas isn’t only a real man, but the man of Sydney’s dreams. Now Sydney must choose between a marriage of convenience and the only man he’s ever loved—the man who saved his life.

  • Etiquette with the Devil

Etiquette with the Devil by Rebecca Paula

Etiquette with the Devil by Rebecca Paula is $1.99 at Amazon! This deal will expire by tomorrow, so grab it soon if you’re interested in this Gothic-esque historical romance. Readers who picked this one up on a whim were pleasantly surprised by the emotional depth of the romance. However, some readers mention that the first and second halves of the book felt very different from one another.

Clara Dawson always followed the rules, until one terrifying night when her inheritance is stolen and the man responsible is left for dead. Desperate to outrun her troubles, she accepts a governess position at the crumbling gothic manor of the mysterious Ravensdale family. Caring for three orphaned children gives her a purpose, but her vulgar employer, Bly Ravensdale, holds dangerous secrets that may shatter Clara’s newfound safe haven. Yet this stubborn brute compels Clara to abandon her etiquette at every turn, and she can’t stay away.

Disowned by his family, Bly Ravensdale travels the globe as an explorer and agent of the British Crown until his brother’s passing leaves him saddled with three young wards. Charged with returning them to the family’s vacant ancestral seat in the English countryside—the one place he wishes to avoid at all costs—Bly quits the role of spy to play family man. But a man nicknamed Devil rarely gets a clean start in life, even with the aid of the prudish yet lovely governess, Clara. Despite her cold exterior, Bly finds himself drawn to her, even as an enemy from his deadly past resurfaces seeking vengeance. Can he protect all that he has suddenly come to hold dear?

  1. Rachel B. says:

I enjoyed The Widows of Malabar Hill quite a lot. No, it is not a romance, but there is considerable story there, and more potential. Our protagonist is a woman of great character without ever sliding over into “spunky” or any other such trope.

  2. Cat C says:

I won a Goodreads copy of Wayward Bride and went completely bananas for it. Not one but two forced proximity/snowbound romances, one of which features a giant Newfoundland saving someone? Yes yes yes. Highly recommend.

  3. LauraL says:

@ Cat C – just one-clicked The Wayward Bride. Thanks for the recommendation.

  4. Vicki says:

Not a romance but kindle daily deal has a Fritz Leiber collection on sale. Gosh, I loved Fafhrrd and the Grey Mouser as a teen!

  5. LMC says:

I generally like Anna Bradley, but the Wayward Bride has the “Big Misunderstanding” and the tidy ending has a lot of stars aligning.
