  • A Hope Divided

A Hope Divided by Alyssa Cole

RECOMMENDED: A Hope Divided by Alyssa Cole is $2.99! This is the second book in the Loyal League series. Redheadedgirl gave it an A grade:

Cole’s books are always timely, and yet timeless. She has a solid grounding of how to use history in her plots, and knows exactly what story she wants to tell. I could not put this down…

The Civil War has turned neighbor against neighbor–but for one scientist spy and her philosopher soldier, war could bind them together . . .

For three years of the War Between the States, Marlie Lynch has helped the cause in peace: with coded letters about anti-Rebel uprisings in her Carolina woods, tisanes and poultices for Union prisoners, and silent aid to fleeing slave and Freeman alike. Her formerly enslaved mother’s traditions and the name of a white father she never knew have protected her–until the vicious Confederate Home Guard claims Marlie’s home for their new base of operations in the guerilla war against Southern resistors of the Rebel cause.

Unbeknowst to those under her roof, escaped prisoner Ewan McCall is sheltering in her laboratory. Seemingly a quiet philosopher, Ewan has his own history with the cruel captain of the Home Guard, and a thoughtful but unbending strength Marlie finds irresistible.

When the revelation of a stunning family secret places Marlie’s freedom on the line, she and Ewan have to run for their lives into the hostile Carolina night. Following the path of the Underground Railroad, they find themselves caught up in a vicious battle that could dash their hopes of love–and freedom–before they ever cross state lines.

  • The Invisible Library

The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman

RECOMMENDED: The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman is 99c! This is a fantasy novel that Carrie really enjoyed. She graded it a B+:

While I genuinely loved the characters and concepts of the book, it’s played strictly for fun adventure. This isn’t a philosophical book. There’s some character development, but it’s not huge. It’s basically just an excuse to have smart people fight cyborg alligators in a ballroom and werewolves in a museum. Luckily during the week that I read this book I was stressed out so it was just what I needed. It’s smart, well-written fluff and I ate it up with a spoon. I am avidly waiting for the sequel.

Collecting books can be a dangerous prospect in this fun, time-traveling, fantasy adventure from a spectacular debut author.

One thing any Librarian will tell you: the truth is much stranger than fiction…

Irene is a professional spy for the mysterious Library, a shadowy organization that collects important works of fiction from all of the different realities. Most recently, she and her enigmatic assistant Kai have been sent to an alternative London. Their mission: Retrieve a particularly dangerous book. The problem: By the time they arrive, it’s already been stolen.

London’s underground factions are prepared to fight to the death to find the tome before Irene and Kai do, a problem compounded by the fact that this world is chaos-infested—the laws of nature bent to allow supernatural creatures and unpredictable magic to run rampant. To make matters worse, Kai is hiding something—secrets that could be just as volatile as the chaos-filled world itself.

Now Irene is caught in a puzzling web of deadly danger, conflicting clues, and sinister secret societies. And failure is not an option—because it isn’t just Irene’s reputation at stake, it’s the nature of reality itself…

  • Heart of the Fae

Heart of the Fae by Emma Hamm

Heart of the Fae by Emma Hamm is 99c at Amazon! This is a Beauty and the Beast retelling and the first in The Otherworld series. This one ends on a cliffhanger and continues in the sequel, but it looks like the rest of the series has a more standalone feel. I’ve seen this recommended on my Twitter feed. Have you read it?

Beauty and the Beast and Irish Mythology mix in this sweeping retelling of the beloved fairytale!

    Once upon a time…

A plague sweeps across the emerald hills of Uí Néill, leaving a young midwife’s father with months to live. To save her people, Sorcha makes a deal with a dangerous Fae. She must travel across the sea, through merrow and kelpie lands, to find a forgotten king on a crumbling throne.

Born king of the Seelie Fae, Eamonn fought battles unnumbered to uphold honor, duty, and freedom… until his twin brother sank a blade between his shoulders. Crystals grew from the wound, splitting open skin and bone. His people banished him to a cursed isle for his disfigurement, now king of criminals and fools.

With the help of brownies, pixies, and will-o’-the-wisps, Sorcha battles to break through his crystalline shell and persuade him to take back his stolen throne.

This determined beauty could come dangerously close to stealing his beastly heart.

  • Bad to the Bone

Bad to the Bone by Roxanne St. Claire

Bad to the Bone by Roxanne St. Claire is 99c! This is part of The Dogfather series. A portion of the proceeds from the series goes to an animal refuge and all the “cover dogs” are rescue animals. How awesome is that! Though this can be read as a standalone, many readers of the series have been anticipating the heroine’s HEA in this one.

The Dogfather is a contemporary romance series from New York Times bestselling author Roxanne St. Claire celebrating what she loves most: hot guys, great dogs, big families…and true love. And a portion of the proceeds from every book in the series will be donated to the Alaqua Animal Refuge in the author’s home state of Florida! The “cover dogs” are all rescues from Alaqua, where the covers are photographed for the series!

Trace Bancroft has been in prison for fourteen years paying for a mistake that cost a man his life. Now released, Trace heads back to Bitter Bark with his mutt, Meatball, and runs into Daniel Kilcannon, who offers to provide some medical care for the dog. Trace knows that would mean seeing Molly Kilcannon, a girl who shared one crazy night with him before his life took a turn for the worst. But when Meatball’s illness intensifies, Trace has no choice. He has to face Molly again, and pray she’ll save his dog, no matter what their history.

When Trace Bancroft arrives at Waterford Farm with a critically ill dog, Molly Kilcannon’s entire world is rocked to the core. Firmly believing Trace died in a bar fight years ago, Molly never told anyone that the bad boy of Bitter Bark was the father of Prudence Kilcannon, her very good thirteen-year-old daughter. But Molly has promised to tell Pru the truth about her conception, and now that truth is a living, breathing ex-con whose very existence could change everything, including a precious mother-daughter relationship.

It doesn’t take long for Molly to realize there’s more to this sexy man than his dark past and tattooed arms. And while the realization that he’s a father is the best thing to ever happen to him, Trace doubts anything could make him worthy of Pru or her spirited veterinarian mother. As they nurse Meatball back to health and grow ever closer, Trace and Molly have to decide when and how to tell Pru the truth. But will the secret that binds their hearts be the very thing that breaks them apart?

  1. Ren Benton says:

The first five of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels are $1.99 each.

    The Colour of Magic (Rincewind)
    The Light Fantastic (Rincewind)
    Equal Rites (Witches)
    Mort (Death)
    Sourcery (Rincewind)

You may want to consult a series primer regarding which books go together and which arcs are of most interest to you. I’m not a fan of Rincewind but like Death, the Witches, and Tiffany Aching, and I feel like I don’t miss more than a few in-jokes by skipping the many books not in those arcs.

  2. Escapeologist says:

The Invisible Library is a fun series, there’s 3 or 4 sequels. Definitely recommend the first book and the Masked City – it’s Venice! With magic! Agree with the review on fluffiness, felt like it had potential for more depth.

  3. MaryK says:

Amazon reviews say that Heart of the Fae and its sequel have a lot of editing and continuity issues.

  4. A Hope Divided is absolutely wonderful!! Such a fantastic series.
