Books On Sale

Fantasy, Susanna Kearsley, & More

Note: There seem to be a lot of fantasy novels on sale, but I have a sneaking suspicion these were part of a Kindle Daily Deal yesterday. My apologies if any of these deals expire quickly.

  • At the Billionaire’s Wedding

At the Billionaire’s Wedding by Maya Rodale

At the Billionaire’s Wedding is $2.99! This book features a handful of favorite authors: Maya Rodale, Caroline Linden, Katharine Ashe, and Miranda Neville. Normally, these authors write amazing historical romances, but this a contemporary romance anthology with billionaires. My favorite story of the bunch was Linden’s “Will You Be My Wi-Fi?”

A stately home in the English countryside seems the ideal place for a bad boy billionaire and his bride to tie the knot. Until the Internet fails. And the oven breaks. And paparazzi invade. And police crash the bachelorette party. And four unlikely couples discover that passion never waits for perfection, and happily ever after is just an “I do” away.

“The Best Laid Planner” by Miranda Neville

Arwen Kilpatrick gets her big break when she’s hired to organize the wedding of an old friend—to a billionaire. Arwen doesn’t have time for romance, not even with the sexy hotel handyman, Harry Compton. But putting on the wedding of the year means dealing with one surprise after another, including the discovery that Harry is so much more than he seems.

“Will You Be My Wi-Fi?” by Caroline Linden

All Natalie Corcoran wants is peace and quiet while she writes her cookbook. The lavish wedding party at the hotel next door is driving her crazy—especially the sexy lawyer who wants her wi-fi password. But Archer Quinn is swamped with work and will do anything to convince her to take a chance on him… first with her wi-fi, then with her friendship, and then with more. But he only has a week to persuade her they’ll be scrumptious together…

“The Day It Rained Books” by Katharine Ashe

Swept away by a mysterious benefactor to the wedding of the year, librarian Cali Blake is living a fairytale. The only thing missing is Prince Charming. Instead the guests include the last man she wants to see—her archenemy, millionaire playboy Piers Prescott. Piers is determined to conquer Cali’s resistance to him, and he’ll stop at nothing to have her. As long as she can remember it’s just for one week, could he be the perfect wedding fling?

“That Moment When You Fall In Love” by Maya Rodale

Sassy reporter Roxanna Lane might be falling for her date, sexy media mogul Damien Knightly, who just happens to be her boss. But he ruins everything by asking her to report on her best friend’s wedding. Damien Knightly is definitely falling for Roxanna, but thanks to an impulsive wager he must choose between losing the crown jewel of his media empire…or the woman he loves.

  • The Belles

    The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton

The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton is 99c! We’ve featured this on the site a couple times in Hide Your Wallet and Cover Awe. Readers say this one is a page-turner, though there are reviews that mention a content warning for sexual assault (unsure of whether it’s on the page or not) and the “bury your gays” trope.

Camellia Beauregard is a Belle. In the opulent world of Orléans, Belles are revered, for they control Beauty, and Beauty is a commodity coveted above all else. In Orléans, the people are born gray, they are born damned, and only with the help of a Belle and her talents can they transform and be made beautiful.

But it’s not enough for Camellia to be just a Belle. She wants to be the favorite—the Belle chosen by the Queen of Orléans to live in the royal palace, to tend to the royal family and their court, to be recognized as the most talented Belle in the land. But once Camellia and her Belle sisters arrive at court, it becomes clear that being the favorite is not everything she always dreamed it would be. Behind the gilded palace walls live dark secrets, and Camellia soon learns that the very essence of her existence is a lie—that her powers are far greater, and could be more dangerous, than she ever imagined. And when the queen asks Camellia to risk her own life and help the ailing princess by using Belle powers in unintended ways, Camellia now faces an impossible decision.

With the future of Orléans and its people at stake, Camellia must decide—save herself and her sisters and the way of the Belles—or resuscitate the princess, risk her own life, and change the ways of her world forever.

  • The Bear and the Nightingale

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

RECOMMENDEDThe Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden is $1.99! This fantasy novel has elements of Russian mythology and I made a soothing cocktail for it. The book is whimsical and perfect for the winter, though it can drag at times.

A magical debut novel for readers of Naomi Novik’s Uprooted, Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus, and Neil Gaiman’s myth-rich fantasies, The Bear and the Nightingale spins an irresistible spell as it announces the arrival of a singular talent with a gorgeous voice.

At the edge of the Russian wilderness, winter lasts most of the year and the snowdrifts grow taller than houses. But Vasilisa doesn’t mind—she spends the winter nights huddled around the embers of a fire with her beloved siblings, listening to her nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, she loves the chilling story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon, who appears in the frigid night to claim unwary souls. Wise Russians fear him, her nurse says, and honor the spirits of house and yard and forest that protect their homes from evil.

After Vasilisa’s mother dies, her father goes to Moscow and brings home a new wife. Fiercely devout, city-bred, Vasilisa’s new stepmother forbids her family from honoring the household spirits. The family acquiesces, but Vasilisa is frightened, sensing that more hinges upon their rituals than anyone knows.

And indeed, crops begin to fail, evil creatures of the forest creep nearer, and misfortune stalks the village. All the while, Vasilisa’s stepmother grows ever harsher in her determination to groom her rebellious stepdaughter for either marriage or confinement in a convent.

As danger circles, Vasilisa must defy even the people she loves and call on dangerous gifts she has long concealed—this, in order to protect her family from a threat that seems to have stepped from her nurse’s most frightening tales.

  • The Firebird

    The Firebird by Susanna Kearsley

The Firebird by Susanna Kearsley is $2.99 at Amazon! This book won a RITA® for Best Paranormal, and our RITA® Reader Challenge reviewer Malin gave it a B+, saying, “It’s a big book, which takes its time to reveal all its secrets, and I especially loved the sections set in St. Petersburg, which I was lucky enough to visit about five years back. This book really made me want to return.”

    Two Women.
    One Mysterious Relic.
    Separated By Centuries.

Nicola Marter was born with a gift so rare and dangerous, she kept it buried deep. When she encounters a desperate woman trying to sell a small wooden carving called “The Firebird,” claiming it belonged to Russia’s Empress Catherine, it’s a problem. There’s no proof.

But Nicola’s held the object. She knows the woman is telling the truth.

Beloved by readers as varied and adventurous as her novels, you will never forget spending time in New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Susanna Kearsley’s world.

I LOVE the winternight trilogy (Bear and the Nightingale is the first book) and Firebird is also excellent. I feel lowkey jealous of those who will buy them on this sale and get to read them for the first time.

  2. Varian says:

I read the sample of The Belles, and the writing is lovely. But the warning for sexual assault and “bury your gays” turns me right off on reading it (I am so, so tired of violence in media.) It might be a library book for me.

  3. Lara says:

On my Nook, Jacqueline Carey’s latest fantasy The Starless is on sale for $2.99. Absolutely worth it; I loved every page.

  4. Ren Benton says:

MY SISTER, THE SERIAL KILLER by by Oyinkan Braithwaite is $3.99. Carrie gave it an A- here in January.

Starless is fantastic and a standalone!

  6. MaryK says:

I’ve been reading more fantasy and sci-fi lately, but when I do I find myself wishing they had more romance in them. So … yeah. :/

(It can be so hard to tell beforehand, too, since “romance” in other genres can mean different things.)

  8. LisaJo885 says:

The sexual assault in “The Beles” is on the page(s). I don’t know what “bury your gays” is? I will say that there are characters who are obviously gay and characters who are in same-sex relationships while also being in or expected to also participate in hetero relationships. And none of it is emphasized or a big deal. One female character is in a same sex relationship that she hides due to class, but when her marriage is arranged, the arranger speaks of considering both a male spouse and a female spouse. I dunno? I will say it gets really freaking grim at the end. I’m so tired of YA fantasy right now and need to take a break.
