    Provenance by Ann Leckie

Provenance by Ann Leckie is $2.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals and is a sci-fi novel. Leckie is an autobuy author for a lot of sci-fi fans and while this book is set in the same world as her previous trilogy, I wonder if you need to read those to understand this one. If you know, please leave your thoughts in the comments!

Following her record-breaking debut trilogy, Ann Leckie, winner of the Hugo, Nebula, Arthur C. Clarke and Locus Awards, returns with a thrilling new story of power, theft, privilege and birthright.

A power-driven young woman has just one chance to secure the status she craves and regain priceless lost artefacts prized by her people. She must free their thief from a prison planet from which no one has ever returned.

Ingray and her charge will return to their home world to find their planet in political turmoil at the heart of an escalating interstellar conflict. Together, they must make a new plan to salvage Ingray’s future, her family and her world, before they are lost to her for good.

  • Irresistible Force

    Irresistible Force by D.D. Ayres

Irresistible Force by D.D. Ayres is $2.99! This is the first book in the K-9 Rescue series. After reading some of the Goodreads reviews, there were readers who felt the execution was lacking, but many really loved the dog, Bogart. I bet Bogart’s a good boy.

When adrenaline runs high, so does the force of desire…

For Shay Appleton, it’s love at first sight when a gorgeous stray dog is brought into the animal shelter where she works. She just knows he’ll make a terrific watch dog—and with an abusive ex who won’t let go, she needs all the protection she can get. But Shay never suspected that her new pet is actually a trained police K-9 named Bogart—until Bogart’s even more gorgeous, human partner shows up on her doorstep.

Officer James Cannon is one tall, strong alpha male who’s convinced that Shay stole his dog. But once he gets closer to the suspect, he realizes that this stubborn, independent woman not only needs a guard dog, she needs James as well. It seems that someone from her past is stalking her, and threatening her life. When danger meets desire, will James risk his career and his best friend…to protect the woman who’s stolen his heart?

  • Lessons from a Scandalous Bride

Lessons from a Scandalous Bride by Sophie Jordan

Lessons from a Scandalous Bride by Sophie Jordan is $1.99! This historical romance is part of the Forgotten Princesses series. Readers loved the Gothic elements at the start of the book, but wish they carried through to the end.

A life can change in an instant…

No one knows this better than Miss Cleopatra Hadley, who went from poverty to plenty when she discovered one of England’s richest men was her true father who wanted her to share his wealth…if she married into the upper echelons of Society. A high price to pay for someone whose mother taught her just how dangerous a marriage could be.

An imposing yet impoverished Scots nobleman, Lord Logan McKinney knows he must wed some vapid title-hunter with a substantial dowry in order to restore his once-thriving estate. Having the vibrant Cleo nearby, however, makes his task even more unpalatable—for she tempts him like no other woman…just as he’s precisely the sort of man she most fears: exciting, unpredictable, fiercely passionate. But when attraction proves too powerful, they succumb to a kiss that quickly leads to lessons too scandalous for even the darkest nights…

  • More Than You Know

More Than You Know by Jennifer Gracen

More Than You Know by Jennifer Gracen is 99c! This is the first book in The Harrisons contemporary romance series. This one features a romance between a hotel owner and a lounge singer, which I think is an interesting pairing. I believe this one has an older heroine who is in her 40s, which readers liked, but some really disliked the hero.

Hotel owner Dane Harrison, middle brother of a wealthy Long Island family, needs a lounge singer for his new luxury property. With her stunning voice and amazing curves, Julia Shay is perfect. She also seems be the only woman in New York City who isn’t falling at Dane’s feet. And despite her feisty attitude and his rule against workplace affairs, he wants her—in his arms, in his bed, anywhere and everywhere.

Julia loves her new job, and she knows better than to think she can keep it and Dane. Even if he wasn’t her boss, Julia’s painful history has given her ample reason to steer clear of rich, powerful charmers. Still, their chemistry is unlike anything she’s known, and when it becomes too much to resist, they agree to one no-strings night together. But instead of quenching the fire, the intense encounter only proves how much they have to lose—or win…

  1. Harrowgate says:

Ugh. I adored Leckie’s Imperial Radch books, but Provenance was dreadful. I couldn’t even finish it. I found the main character unappealing and dull, coming across as a whiny teenager. I finally hit a point and gave up because I was bored. Maybe there was a better story coming, but it was coming too slowly and what I read (listened to… several hours, honest, I tried!) did nothing for me. I’m still going to give Leckie’s forthcoming fantasy novel a try, of course.

  2. cbackson says:

The Irresistible Force would be my desire to give that good boy ALL THE SCRITCHES AND BELLY RUBS.

  3. genie says:

How does a trained police dog end up in the shelter? K-9 doggies aren’t microchipped?

  4. Ren Benton says:

@genie: I tried to get an answer about the dog from the sample (“kidnapped” and “maybe the woman who took him to the shelter hadn’t been completely honest” was the extent of the info available), but I’m more concerned about Officer Triggerhappy Jumpstoconclusionsalot, who forces his way into a woman’s home and points a rifle at her in a non-official capacity.

  5. Meg says:

I just finished “Lessons from a Scandalous Bride” a couple days ago. I have VERY mixed feelings about this book. There were flashes of utter brilliance, such as Cleo’s heartbreaking relationship with her siblings. But Logan was just an asshole much of the time, especially during one key scene where he needed to BACK OFF and instead just mentally crowed about being able to marry Cleo now. And given what she had gone through, Cleo had a bit too much TSTL going on regarding certain people.

  6. AJ says:

Provenance takes place in a totally different corner of the universe from the Imperial Radch trilogy, and while there’s a brief mention of the events of the trilogy, this book stands completely on its own. Like Harrowgate, I found that it was also very different from the trilogy and not as good. I did eventually settle into it and enjoy it, but you really have to go into it expecting it to be its own thing and not a continuation of the trilogy.

  7. Diana says:

I loved both Provenance and the trilogy. From talking to friends, I think the key to reading them is genre expectation. So, they are set in the same world, but the trilogy is a space opera and Provenance is a cozy mystery. It’s very different, but I loved being back in this world and thought it was a very fun romp.

  8. Floating Lush says:

I loved Provenance, but it is indeed very different than the Imperial Radch series. It’s a Why Dunnit, with a heavy emphasis on discovering who you are, not a grand and sweeping space opera, and while Ingray certainly starts out the book clueless and a bit whiny, she grows so much over the course of it, and learns so much about herself and her family, that it just made me happy (and occasionally a bit anxious) to go on that journey with her.

  9. Harrowgate says:

@Floating_Lush Hm. I might have to give it another try–wouldn’t be the first time I did not get into to a book but on a second (or third) try devoured it. With Provenance, I just did not connect with the characters. I did not give a damn about Ingrey or any of the others. I went into it knowing perfectly well that it was a totally different book than the Imperial Radch series, did not have the wrong expectation, just really did not connect. I’ll give it a while and see if a second try works any better. Maybe after Leckie’s new one next month.

  10. Laura says:

Just headed over to Goodreads to see what I could find about Irresistible Force and stumbled into a possible need for a trigger warning for violence to an animal. Eek! No thanks, already sketchy enough without that!

  11. Vicki says:

Irresistible Force cover shows a mouth that is way too pretty and seems to be dripping blood. Is this a vampire book, too?

  12. LauraL says:

Irresistible Force is not a vampire book. I never noticed the mouth! The trained K9 ending up in the shelter requires a little suspension of disbelief. However, Bogart is a very good boy.

  13. KateB says:

WYLDING HALL by Elizabeth Hand is a KDD and it excellent. Its a Gothic horror novella with the 70′ English folk band recording in an grand old house and a mysterious disappearance. Its told with interviews and newspaper clippings. The audio book is exceptionally good.

  14. Maeve says:

Provenance is all about valuation — of Ingrey, of being an heir, of cultural artifacts, etc on several levels. I also found her immature and kind of whiny at the beginning but the book slowly hooked me. Maybe try again when you’re looking for a cosy mystery?

  15. Sam Victors says:

    One question,

What is with the cliche of handsome man falls for woman because she doesn’t fall at his feet like other women?

    I frankly don’t get that.

  16. Diana says:

    @Sam Victors

I think it’s because of the other cliche: “men are hunters” and they prefer to hunt instead of getting the easy prey. So, a manly man that likes to hunt is more attractive to the woman-reader.

I actually like that… better than if they both like each other from the start.

  17. Ren Benton says:

@Sam Victors: It’s not about the man. A heroine who “falls at his feet” is one I have no interest in reading about.

  18. EJ says:

I like dogs. Dogs make me happy. I don’t like guns. Guns make me anxious. Elizabeth Hoyt often puts dogs in her books so I think I’ll stick with them for now.
