    Karen Memory by Elizabeth Bear

Karen Memory by Elizabeth Bear is $2.99! This is a steampunk novel with some alternate history and I totally love the cover. What do you think? Readers really loved the heroine and I can’t really blame them. She sounds (and looks) like a badass. However, some thought there were too many different elements going on. It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

“You ain’t gonna like what I have to tell you, but I’m gonna tell you anyway. See, my name is Karen Memery, like memory only spelt with an e, and I’m one of the girls what works in the Hôtel Mon Cherie on Amity Street. Hôtel has a little hat over the o like that. It’s French, so Beatrice tells me.”

Hugo-Award winning author Elizabeth Bear offers something new in Karen Memory, an absolutely entrancing steampunk novel set in Seattle in the late 19th century—an era when the town was called Rapid City, when the parts we now call Seattle Underground were the whole town (and still on the surface), when airships plied the trade routes bringing would-be miners heading up to the gold fields of Alaska, and steam-powered mechanicals stalked the waterfront. Karen is a “soiled dove,” a young woman on her own who is making the best of her orphaned state by working in Madame Damnable’s high-quality bordello. Through Karen’s eyes we get to know the other girls in the house—a resourceful group—and the poor and the powerful of the town. Trouble erupts into her world one night when a badly injured girl arrives at their door, seeking sanctuary, followed by the man who holds her indenture, who has a machine that can take over anyone’s mind and control their actions. And as if that wasn’t bad enough, the next night brings a body dumped in their rubbish heap—a streetwalker who has been brutally murdered.

Bear brings alive this Jack-the-Ripper-type story of the old west with the light touch of Karen’s own memorable voice, and a mesmerizing evocation of classic steam-powered science.

  • Bad Reputation

    Bad Reputation by Stefanie London

Bad Reputation by Stefanie London is $2.51 at select vendors. This is part of the Bad Bachelors series, and I think I liked the previous book more than this one. However, if you like your romances to deal with family dynamics and scandal, you might enjoy this one! Also, there are lots of sexy dancing scenes!

    It’s true, Wes is well-endowed.
But everything else is a huge misunderstanding…

Wes Evans, son of Broadway royalty, just wants to achieve something without riding his family’s coattails. Too bad the whole world is talking about his sex life after the notorious Bad Bachelors app dubs him “The Anaconda”. But when he sees a talented ballet dancer, he knows she is exactly what he needs to make his show a success.

Remi Drysdale only had one thought when she fled Australia for New York—never mix business with pleasure again. Ever. Working with Wes is the perfect chance to reclaim her career. Remi promises herself not to tangle with the guy who holds her career in his hands…no matter how enticing his reviews are on the Bad Bachelors app.

  • Grim Lovelies

    Grim Lovelies by Megan Shepherd

Grim Lovelies by Megan Shepherd is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal today, and has been featured on Cover Awe and Hide Your Wallet. Readers loved the setting and the authors voice, though there are some content warnings: abuse, animal cruelty, and the “bury your gays” trope. So please, read carefully.

Seventeen-year-old Anouk envies the human world, where people known as Pretties lavish themselves in fast cars, high fashion, and have the freedom to fall in love. But Anouk can never have those things, because she is not really human. Enchanted from animal to human girl and forbidden to venture beyond her familiar Parisian prison, Anouk is a Beastie: destined for a life surrounded by dust bunnies and cinders serving Mada Vittora, the evil witch who spelled her into existence. That is, until one day she finds her mistress murdered in a pool of blood—and Anouk is accused of the crime.

Now, the world she always dreamed of is rife with danger. Pursued through Paris by the underground magical society known as the Haute, Anouk and her fellow Beasties only have three days to find the real killer before the spell keeping them human fades away. If they fail, they will lose the only lives they’ve ever known…but if they succeed, they could be more powerful than anyone ever bargained for.

From New York Times bestselling author Megan Shepherd, Grim Lovelies is an epic and glittering YA fantasy. Prepare to be spellbound by the world of Grim Lovelies, where secrets have been long buried, friends can become enemies, and everything—especially humanity—comes at a price.

  • Once Upon a Wedding Boxed Set

Once Upon a Wedding Boxed Set by Kelly McClymer

Once Upon a Wedding Boxed Set by Kelly McClymer is 99c! This set collects books 1-4 in her Victorian historical romance Once Upon a Wedding series. These are full-length romances and four for less than a buck is a pretty stellar deal.

Once Upon A Wedding Boxed Set (Books 1-4)

Set against the glittering backdrop of Victorian high society, four romantic tales featuring the unconventional Fensters by acclaimed romance author Kelly McClymer…

    The Fairy Tale Bride
A disastrous London season convinces Miranda Fenster that happily ever after is for other people. But when an attempt to help her star-crossed brother goes awry, she finds herself married to the Duke of Kerstone. Can the hopeless romantic Miranda prove to her impeccably proper husband that fairy tales really do come true?

    The Star-Crossed Bride
Ever a gentleman, Viscount Valentine Fenster steps aside when the woman he loves, Lady Emily Wertherly chooses another man. When he discovers Emily’s fiance is a fortune-hunting murderer, Valentine tosses caution—and decorum—to the wind to save her. But he’ll have to move fast since the headstrong and highly-imaginative Emily is intent on saving herself…

    The Unintended Bride
Shy Hero Fenster loves two things—books and Arthur Watterly. But Arthur, the heir to a dukedom and pledged to another since birth, is the one thing she can never have—that is until the quest for a rare Arthurian manuscript and a night of passion in a bookshop change everything.

    The Infamous Bride
Notorious flirt Juliet Fenster enjoys the delights of the London season far too much to consider settling down—particularly with a stuffy American like Romeo “RJ” Hopkins. But when the unlikely pair are cast in an amateur production of Romeo and Juliet, they find themselves doing far more than “playing” at love…

  1. Maeve says:

Karen Memory is one of my favorite Elizabeth Bear books! There’s a very sweet lesbian romance for Karen.

  2. NomadiCat says:

Seconding the Karen Memory love! The book does indeed have a lot going on, but I think it all works together well. You’ve got steampunk, sex work, serial murders, villains both over the top and totally believable, Marshall Bass Reeves (the black man the Lone Ranger was based on) trying to make it all right… basically if you want a rip-roaring adventure set in a world both believable and fantastical, with a charmingly awkward lesbian romance, this book is for you!
