  • Midsummer Moon

    Midsummer Moon by Laura Kinsale

Midsummer Moon by Laura Kinsale is $1.99! This has been discussed and recommended on a few previous podcasts and is a little lighter on angst than Kinsale’s other romances. For many readers, this was one of their first romances and as a bonus, it has an adorable hedgehog. Have you read this one?

    An impossible inventor…

Ransom Falconer, Duke of Damerell, is sent to see if Merlin Lambourne, the famous inventor, has created a truly magnificent innovation that can be used in the war against Napoleon. What Ransom doesn’t realize is that Merlin is a woman, and not everyone wants to see her invention become a reality…

    With dreams of flight…

Merlin Lambourne is a brilliant yet slightly eccentric scientist whose dream is to build a flying machine. Nothing can distract her from her goals, and Ransom offers her refuge at his estate, a safe haven to work on her invention undisturbed. But when Merlin’s dream puts them both at risk, Ransom must overcome his own fears and realize her invention may be the answer to saving both their lives…

  • Test Drive

    Test Drive by Marie Harte

Test Drive by Marie Harte is 99c! This is the first book in the Body Shop Bad Boys series, and the rest of the books are available at a reduced price. The book’s description mentions the hero coming to the heroine’s aid after a “dirtbag mauls her.” And if you’re over those sorts of “meet cutes” that’s a-okay.

GET TO KNOW THE BODY SHOP BAD BOYS
Johnny, Foley, Sam, and Lou are the rough and tumble mechanics of Webster’s Garage. These reformed bad boys are used to living fast, but it’s the women in their lives who take them from zero to sixty in a heartbeat.

    JOHNNY
Johnny Devlin’s a charmer with a checkered past. He’s has had his eye on scorching-hot bartender Lara Valley for ages, but she’s rejected him more than once. That doesn’t mean he won’t come to her aid when some dirtbag mauls her. When she asks him on a date as a no-strings-attached thank you, he can’t say no. And then he’s saying nothing but hell, yes.

  • Until There Was Us

Until There Was Us by Samantha Chase

Until There Was Us by Samantha Chase is $2.99! This is a contemporary romance where the hero and heroine initially have a one night stand. This is a low angsty read with lots of family dynamics, if that’s your catnip. However, others noted that the pace of this book is on the slower side.

He’ll have to play his cards just right for her to take a chance on him…

Megan Montgomery has always been careful…except that one time she threw caution to the wind and hooked up with a sexy groomsman at her cousin’s wedding. But that was two years ago—so why can’t she stop thinking about Alex Rebat?

Alex has been living the good life. He loves his job, has a great circle of friends, and doesn’t answer to anyone. The problem? There’s only one woman he wants and she ran out on him after one amazing weekend. But now that Megan’s coming back to town, Alex hopes he can convince her to take another chance on him…and on a future that can only be built together.

  • The Hamilton Affair

The Hamilton Affair by Elizabeth Cobbs

The Hamilton Affair by Elizabeth Cobbs is $1.99! This is a work of historical fiction that focuses on Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler’s relationship. Redheadedgirl mentioned that she’d read this one in a previous Whatcha Reading. She found it “good, but disjointed.”

Set against the dramatic backdrop of the American Revolution, and featuring a cast of iconic characters such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and the Marquis de Lafayette, The Hamilton Affair tells the sweeping, tumultuous, true love story of Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler, from tremulous beginning to bittersweet ending—his at a dueling ground on the shores of the Hudson River, hers more than half a century later after a brave, successful life.

Hamilton was a bastard son, raised on the Caribbean island of St. Croix. He went to America to pursue his education. Along the way he became one of the American Revolution’s most dashing—and unlikely—heroes. Adored by Washington, hated by Jefferson, Hamilton was a lightning rod: the most controversial leader of the American Revolution.

She was the well-to-do daughter of one of New York’s most exalted families—feisty, adventurous, and loyal to a fault. When she met Alexander, she fell head over heels. She pursued him despite his illegitimacy, and loved him despite his infidelity. In 1816 (two centuries ago), she shamed Congress into supporting his seven orphaned children. Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton started New York’s first orphanage. The only “founding mother” to truly embrace public service, she raised 160 children in addition to her own.

With its flawless writing, brilliantly drawn characters, and epic scope, The Hamilton Affair will take its place among the greatest novels of American history.

  1. Ren Benton says:

I started a Goodreads shelf labeled “SHE SAID NO TWELVE TIMES” because of that Marie Harte book. The hero specifically cites 12 rejections at one point and lurking at the bar where she works. A bit later:

Once again he’d tried asking her out, and once again she’d shot him down. He never took it personally though. He figured one of these times she had to say yes.

As long as he’s good-natured about rejection, harassment and stalking are okay? Yeah, no. I didn’t even make it to the “rescue.”

  2. Susan says:

I really wanted to like Midsummer Moon (a hedgehog!), but mostly just found it tiresome. It tried too hard with the madcap elements. (But maybe I’m just an old grump.)

  3. Sandra says:

@Susan: I may be an old grump too. Midsummer Moon was my first and only Kinsale. I read it after reading on blog after blog about how great a writer Kinsale is. She may be, but not for me. Merlin was just plain annoying and utterly clueless, though now I realize she’s probably meant to be somewhere on the autism spectrum. But all her enablers, that went behind their employer’s back, to aid and abet, just because she was so loveable??? IDK.

  4. Ms. M says:

@Sandra Oh no! Kinsale really is a great writer– it’s just that this one is not so good! If you ever want to give her another shot, For My Lady’s Heart, Shadowheart, Flowers from the Storm, and Seize the Fire are all excellent. I promise.

  5. Teev says:

@Ren Benton: after reading your comment I look at that cover and wonder how he’s gonna shave his chest now that he threw his Gillette in the toilet!

  6. Ren Benton says:

@Teev: I laughed so hard, I scared the cat.

  7. Teev says:

    @Ren Benton: Yay!

  8. JetGirl says:

I also disliked Midsummer Moon, but not because of the heroine. The hero was a big jerk who seduces her, then kidnaps her for her safety because of the French, then does his best to squash her dream of building an airplane by locking her out of her lab. She just wants to go home and continue her work, and her keeps bullying her to marry him and have his kids and be like every boring ton woman. He also takes his sister-in-law’s kids from her, and bullies his brother and sister.
