  • More or Less a Temptress

More or Less a Temptress by Anna Bradley

More or Less a Temptress by Anna Bradley is 99c! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched at a few other vendors. There are three pages of deals today and the second book of this series (The Somerset Sisters) is also on sale. Readers love Bradley’s writing style and voice, but others had trouble with the heroine.

A beautiful debutante in Regency London seems destined to make a good match. But the Somerset sisters have made courtship and matrimony a deliciously scandalous affair . . .

Hyacinth Somerset’s debut is the most anticipated event of the season, as it will be the reclusive young lady’s first public appearance. But within moments of being asked to dance by a dashing stranger, Hyacinth calls him a murderer, then faints dead away! Now all the ton is a aflutter over Hyacinth’s baffling shun of their most intriguing newcomer—the wildly handsome Lachlan Ramsey . . .

Recently arrived from Scotland, Lachlan only wishes to claim his place in society to secure his sister’s future. When that is threatened by the accusations of a hapless slip of a girl, he will do anything protect his family. Yet it appears Hyacinth has only damaged her own hopes, inspiring the label of hysteric—and ultimately inspiring Lachlan to shelter her from harm. Now if only there were a defense for the surge of feeling he has every time Hyacinth turns her gaze his way. If only there were a way to make her his—while keeping the true secret in his past from destroying everything—and everyone—he cares about . . .

  • Playing with Fire

Playing with Fire by RJ Blain

Playing with Fire by R.J. Blain is 99c! This is described as a “magical romantic comedy” and yes, that appears to be a unicorn on the cover. And I believe that unicorn is also a shifter of sorts. I have a Kindle credit and I think I might spend it on this. Some readers found this to be more on the bizarre side, which…fair point. While others found themselves laughing out loud.

Warning: This novel contains excessive humor, action, excitement, adventure, magic, romance, and bodies. Proceed with caution.

What do you get when you mix gorgons, an incubus, and the Calamity Queen? Trouble, and lots of it.

Working as the only human barista at a coffee shop catering to the magical is a tough gig on a good day. Bailey Gardener has few options. She can either keep spiking drinks with pixie dust to keep the locals happy, or spend the rest of her life cleaning up the world’s nastiest magical substances.

Unfortunately for her, Faery Fortunes is located in the heart of Manhattan Island, not far from where Police Chief Samuel Quinn works. If she’d been smart, she never would have agreed to help the man find his wife.

Bailey found her, all right—in the absolutely worst way possible.

One divorce and several years later, Bailey is once again entangled in Chief Quinn’s personal affairs, and he has good reason to hate her. Without her, he wouldn’t be Manhattan’s Most Wanted Bachelor, something he loathes. Without her, he’d still be married.

If only she’d said no when he asked her help, she might have had a chance with him. While her magic worked well, it came with a price: misfortune. Hers.

When Quinn’s former brother-in-law comes to her for help, he leaves her with a cell phone and seventy-five thousand reasons to put her magic to the test. However, when she discovers Quinn’s ex-wife is angling for revenge, Bailey’s tossed in the deep end along with her sexiest enemy.

  • The Ghost Bride

The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo

The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo is $1.99! This is a mixture of historical fiction, fantasy, and romance. The Ghost Bride has actually been recommended to me by so many friends that I had to take notice, though I haven’t had a chance to read it just yet. Readers can’t say enough good things about the setting and Chinese folklore, though some mention the book reads more like a young adult novel, which they weren’t really expecting. It has a 3.7-star rating on GR.

‘One evening, my father asked me whether I would like to become a ghost bride…’

Though ruled by British overlords, the Chinese of colonial Malaya still cling to ancient customs. And in the sleepy port town of Malacca, ghosts and superstitions abound.

Li Lan, the daughter of a genteel but bankrupt family, has few prospects. But fate intervenes when she receives an unusual proposal from the wealthy and powerful Lim family. They want her to become a ghost bride for the family’s only son, who recently died under mysterious circumstances. Rarely practiced, traditional ghost marriages are used to placate restless spirits. Such a union would guarantee Li Lan a home for the rest of her days, but at a terrible price.

After an ominous visit to the opulent Lim mansion, Li Lan finds herself haunted not only by her ghostly would-be suitor, but also by her desire for the Lims’ handsome new heir, Tian Bai. Night after night, she is drawn into the shadowy parallel world of the Chinese afterlife, with its ghost cities, paper funeral offerings, vengeful spirits, and monstrous bureaucracy—including the mysterious Er Lang, a charming but unpredictable guardian spirit. Li Lan must uncover the Lim family’s darkest secrets—and the truth about her own family—before she is trapped in this ghostly world forever.

  • Ignite the Stars

Ignite the Stars by Maura Milan

Ignite the Stars by Maura Milan is 99c! This is a YA sci-fi novel and has been mentioned a couple times on the site. I picked it for September 2018’s Hide Your Wallet and it was featured on Cover Awe. Readers enjoyed the badass main character and note there’s a hint of a slow burn romance. However, others found the writing to be stilted and choppy.

Everyone in the universe knows his name. Everyone in the universe fears him. But no one realizes that notorious outlaw Ia Cocha is a seventeen-year-old girl.

A criminal mastermind and unrivaled pilot, Ia has spent her life terrorizing the Olympus Commonwealth, the imperialist nation that destroyed her home. When the Commonwealth captures her and her true identity is exposed, they see Ia’s age and talent as an opportunity: by forcing her to serve them, they will prove that no one is beyond their control.

Soon, Ia is trapped at the Commonwealth’s military academy, desperately plotting her escape. But new acquaintances—including Brinn, a seemingly average student with a closely-held secret, and their charming Flight Master, Knives—cause Ia to question her own alliances. Can she find a way to escape the Commonwealth’s clutches before these bonds deepen?

In this exhilarating edge-of-your-seat sci-fi adventure—perfect for fans of The Lunar Chronicles—debut author Maura Milan introduces our world to a thrilling new heroine.

I remember liking The Ghost Bride well enough, but I recall the ending coming a bit out of left field. I can’t actually remember much about the story or the writing style. (I read it back in 2015)

  3. Katie C. says:

Two books on my long TBR list are free at Amazon today:

    Butterface by Avery Flynn
An Accidental Death by Peter Grainger

  4. EllenM says:

Ghost Bride is SO good!!! Definitely helped scratch my fantasy romance itch because there just aren’t that many options.

  5. Maile says:

Ginn Hale’s fantasy romance duology ‘Lord of the White Hell’ is going for 50% off at Weightless Books with the coupon ‘HALE50’. It’s a YA-leaning, coming-of-age tale with magic, intrigue, and forbidden love, with fabulous world-building and lots of angsty tension. The sequel duology ‘Champion of the Scarlett Wolf’ is one of the best things I’ve ever read, and I’m not even a big SFF fan. Highly recommended!
