The Devious Dr. Jekyll
The Devious Dr. Jekyll by Viola Carr is 99c! We had a guest review of this book on the site and the review gave it a B+ grade:
I decided to give this book a B+, because any book that can make me feel so emotionally invested in the characters is obviously doing a good job. I wanted to scream at the characters, but I kept reading because Carr had her hooks in my heart and I needed to know how things would work out. The world she creates is a rich one, but one that you’re able to pick up and understand as you read without having to have any of those tiresome ‘context/background’ passages. The mystery in the story, the crimes, the motives, were all so engaging and the denouement is a stabbing, plot-twist knife to the heart, but with a neat, satisfying bow around the knife’s handle.
Dr. Eliza Jekyll, heroine of the electrifying The Diabolical Miss Hyde—an edgy steampunk retelling of the classic Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde—investigates a bizarre murder case in an alternate Victorian London while battling her treacherous secret half: Lizzie Hyde.
Solving the infamous Chopper case has helped crime scene physician Dr. Eliza Jekyll establish her fledgling career in the chauvinistic world of Victorian law enforcement. But the scrutiny that comes with her newfound fame is unwelcome for a woman with a diabolical secret. And there is the mercurial Royal Society agent and wolf man Remy Lafayette. Does he want to marry her, eat her, or burn her at the stake? Though Eliza is uncertain about Remy, her dark and jealous shadow self, Lizzie, wants to steal the magnetic and persistent agent, and usurp Eliza’s life.
It’s impossible to push Remy away when he tempts her with the one thing she can’t resist: a bizarre crime. The search for a bloodthirsty ritual torturer dubbed the Pentacle Killer draws them into a terrifying world of spies, art thieves, and evil alchemy, where the price of immortality is madness?or damnation—and only Lizzie’s dark ingenuity can help Eliza survive.
As Eliza and Remy race to thwart a foul conspiracy involving the sorcerous French, they must also overcome a sinister enemy who is all too close: the vengeful Lizzie, determined to dispose of Eliza for good.

Sterling
Sterling by Dannika Dark is 99c at Amazon, but $3.99 elsewhere! I bought this one after it was recommended to me on Goodreads. A lot of the reviews are divided, (one star versus five stars) but perhaps the 99c sale price will convince some of you to give it a chance and report back!
Zoë Merrick lived an ordinary life until the night she was brutally attacked. She narrowly escapes death, rescued by Adam Razor, an ex-soldier who offers her friendship and a place to stay. But something else is different. Zoë is unable to control an unexplainable energy coursing through her body.
Justus De Gradi is a man who can teach her that control. She meets him by chance – a man who’s handsome, arrogant, and not entirely human. He reveals that she’s a Mage – an immortal made of light, not magic. Zoë must now make a choice: Rebuild her life in the human world with the man who saved her, or live with Justus and learn how to use her extraordinary gifts. Justus has sworn an oath to protect her life, but can he guard her from the one man who has a right to claim it?
Zoë learns the price of freedom…and the value of loyalty.

Good Girl
Good Girl by Jana Aston is $1.49 at Amazon! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals, though it isn’t being price-matched as of yet. Can I just say that I hate first POV book descriptions, because they rarely tell me enough about the book? What I can gather from this one is this is a workplace, forbidden romance.
I’ve always been a good girl.
I work hard, I follow the rules, I always achieve my goals. But sometimes good girls want things that aren’t good for them.
Or someone who isn’t good for them.
Like their new boss. And sometimes they do very bad things to get his attention.
Like sell their virginity in an auction.Who knew he’d be so very, very mad?
Maybe this was not my best laid plan…Add to Goodreads To-Read List →

Wicked Lords of London: 1-3
Wicked Lords of London by Tammy Andresen is 99c! This is a set with three historical romances. Amazon reports that this set includes books 1-3, while Goodreads reports it’s books 1 and 2, with the prequel book. Regardless, each romance is similar in length at just over one hundred or so pages.
Wicked Lords require a special hand when it comes to taming them. These lovely ladies are up for the challenge.
Earl of Sussex
Wickedly sinful, the Earl of Sussex, is an unrepentant rake. The Wicked Earls’ Club is the perfect place for a man of his station to indulge. That is until his parents force a match that threatens to rob him of his freedom. Unwilling to be tamed, he travels to meet his bride and demand she put a stop to this farce. Except Lady Tabitha is nothing he expected, and everything he never knew he wanted. Too bad this fiery wallflower is equally bent on ending their engagement.
Lady Tabitha, daughter of the duke, will not be betrothed to a rake no matter what her father thinks of his social connections. As long as she doesn’t stare into the depths of his green eyes, or linger on the strong lines of jaw, she should be able to scheme her way out of this engagement. That is, if her intended groom would just cooperate in her plans.
But the more time they spend together, the harder their attraction is to deny.
My Duke’s Seduction
Can her gentle tenacity unlock a duke’s heart?
Lady Tricia Riley is the sweet daughter of a duke until her family’s ailments force her to breech societies’ dictates and go where no lady should… the docklands. When a tall, strong and handsome stranger helps to keep her safe, she agrees to keep their meeting, secret. She’s no interest in marrying a tall and darkly handsome stranger. Actually, she has no intention of marrying at all. Instead, she plans to dedicate herself to charitable pursuits.
Ryker Pembroke, Duke of Landon, will marry eventually, as duty requires him to do. But it is a fate, he regards with a certain amount of dread. That is, until an auburn haired minx bursts into his life. Her warmth, charm and giving nature draws him to her even as he attempts to maintain a safe distance. She is entirely wrong for him with her impulsive nature and blatant disregard for her own safety makes her a terrible choice for a wife… doesn’t it?
My Duke’s Deception
A mysterious man saves her life but can he save her heart?
Lady Eleanor McIntyre has been forgotten by society, unloved and left to ruin by her father. But just when she is at her lowest, she crosses paths with a mysterious man who saves her. It is like a miracle but even more shocking is that he needs her help to find his lost sister.
Lord Matthew Evans, the Duke of Harlington, has an excellent reason for hiding his title from the lovely Ella. The only woman he had ever loved cared far more about his position than she ever did the man. Ella is too beautiful to be trusted with the knowledge he is a duke. But the longer he knows her, the more he wishes he hadn’t deceived her. Because as pure as her heart is, she could surely never love a man who lied about his identity.

Man, if I had a nickel for every time I had auctioned my virginity to catch a guy’s attention. Who among us hasn’t been there, amirite ladies?
@Momo- yup, that right there made it a big ‘ol Nope for me!
@Momo: This might be the best comment I’ve ever seen on this site.
I found Sterling to be fine, if a bit standardized and dull for urban fantasy. It’s been a while, but I seem to recall it including one of those heroines who’s supposed to be strong but doesn’t do all that much.
Also, Blade and Rose by Miranda Honfleur is 99 cents.
I really enjoy the Carr books, but I have to be honest. I find Lizzie, the “treacherous other half”, a much more likeable and honest character.
Meh. I thought the first Viola Carr book was dreadful; certainly not going to read this one.
“Lady Tricia Riley is the sweet daughter of a duke until her family’s ailments force her to breech societies’ dictates and go where no lady should”
It’s always interesting when the blurb uses the wrong homophone. I’m stuck on the image of Lady Tricia stuffing a pair of breeches with several copies of a book on proper behavior.
@Amanda That’s very kind of you to say, though I’m not sure if my comment truly merited it
@WS: I was recently required to read an entire book in which the homophones were so consistently wrong, it could only be some kind of espionage code. Everything from to/too to unprotected sex exposing the heroine to seamen—it had EVERYTHING. The last 50 pages being non-mandatory “bonus material” saved me from impending stroke.
I bit on the 99 cent sale for Sterling and am finding it pretty terrible. Wooden dialogue, strange POV shifts, super weak characterization (all the men are big alpha dudes with giant biceps who sound exactly the same), and it doesn’t just fail the Bechdel Test – it didn’t even sit for it (I’m at 85% and there are no female characters aside from the heroine, other than a BFF that shows up in the first chapter and a random female councilmember that I don’t think speaks at any point).
