  • Furiously Happy

    Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson

RECOMMENDED: Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson is $2.99 at Amazon! This sale might expire soon. Elyse loved this book and how it helped her deal with chronic pain. She gave it an A:

Furiously Happy is a rare book, a combination of ridiculous humor and poignant reflection. I think anyone who has suffered from a stigmatized illness will identify with Lawson’s honest, sometimes heartbreaking, description of her own pain. It’s still an uplifting book though, and that’s important. Lawson believes in celebrating small victories and quiet bravery. I get that. Sometimes you’re proud because hey, you got out of bed and showered today but you can’t post that on Facebook because other people don’t get it (and you’ll get shitty comments “Wow, I trained for my half marathon and worked 12 hours.” NOBODY CARES, GARY).

For fans of David Sedaris, Tina Fey, and Mindy Kaling-the new book from Jenny Lawson, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Let’s Pretend This Never Happened

In Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, Jenny Lawson baffled readers with stories about growing up the daughter of a taxidermist. In her new book,Furiously Happy, Jenny explores her lifelong battle with mental illness. A hysterical, ridiculous book about crippling depression and anxiety? That sounds like a terrible idea. And terrible ideas are what Jenny does best.

According to Jenny: “Some people might think that being ‘furiously happy’ is just an excuse to be stupid and irresponsible and invite a herd of kangaroos over to your house without telling your husband first because you suspect he would say no since he’s never particularly liked kangaroos. And that would be ridiculous because no one would invite a herd of kangaroos into their house. Two is the limit. I speak from personal experience. My husband says that none is the new limit. I say he should have been clearer about that before I rented all those kangaroos.”

“Most of my favorite people are dangerously fucked-up but you’d never guess because we’ve learned to bare it so honestly that it becomes the new normal. Like John Hughes wrote in The Breakfast Club, ‘We’re all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it.’ Except go back and cross out the word ‘hiding.'”

Jenny’s first book, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, was ostensibly about family, but deep down it was about celebrating your own weirdness.Furiously Happy is a book about mental illness, but under the surface it’s about embracing joy in fantastic and outrageous ways-and who doesn’t need a bit more of that?

  • Along Came Love

Along Came Love by Tracey Livesay

Along Came Love by Tracey Livesay is 99c! This book was featured in a previous Hide Your Wallet post. Livesay writes smart, competent characters, but some reviewers that the heroine was a bit too selfish in her actions. Have you read this one?

When a silly, impulsive decision lands free-spirited India Shaw behind bars in San Francisco, she has no choice but to call the only person she knows in the unfamiliar city—the very man she abandoned after a steamy two-day fling. The fact that she’s pregnant with his child is something she’d rather not divulge.

Tech executive Michael Black never thought he’d hear from the quirky beauty after she left his bed four months ago, much less be called upon to post bail. He’s got his hands full with a corporate merger that could make or break his career, but his honorable nature—and an overwhelming need to see her again—means he can’t just leave her in jail. And when India reveals the truth about her pregnancy, Mike insists she stay with him until the baby is born.

India doesn’t want to depend on him for anything, but their constant proximity stirs up feelings she can’t ignore. She’s never desired a family before and she knows a future with Mike isn’t possible . . . but then along came love to shake up all her plans.

  • Highland Devil

    Highland Devil by Hannah Howell

Highland Devil by Hannah Howell is $1.99 at Amazon! Is it just me or does the cover model resemble Jake Gyllenhaal? This is the 22nd book in the Murray Family series, though I believe this works fine as a standalone. Readers say this romance is a great slow burn, while others found it was too slow of a burn for them.

New York Times bestselling author Hannah Howell returns to medieval Scotland where daring and desire stir the passions of the Murray clan…

When a red-haired woman tries to steal Sir Gybbon Murray’s horse on his journey back to the Murray stronghold, he thanks his lucky stars that his horse is a rude lout—and that the pretty thief is not so injured that she can’t tell her tale. He’s no nursemaid to delicate lasses, but Mora Ogilvy is fleeing her ruthless cousins, fearing for her life. And when she tells him of the home they’ve taken from her and the man they say she murdered, Gybbon cannot let such injustice stand.

Mora’s pride demands she take back her lands, but not by risking the lives of this handsome, wicked knight and his family. Still, she needs to recover from her wounds, and staying close to Gybbon in his brother’s keep is a seductive solution. A few weeks at his side will be a sweet memory for her when she returns to fight her own battles. Except the depth of her cousins’ treachery—and the fierceness of Gybbon’s love—may turn her own heart against her plans.

  • The Shadow Land

The Shadow Land by Elizabeth Kostova

The Shadow Land by Elizabeth Kostova is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal for today. This is a mix between historical fiction and literary fiction. I also mentioned this in a previous Hide Your Wallet. Readers definitely say the book is slow going at first. However, others talk highly of the writing and character depth.

From the #1 bestselling author of The Historian comes an engrossing novel that spans the past and the present—and unearths the dark secrets of Bulgaria, a beautiful and haunted country.

A young American woman, Alexandra Boyd, has traveled to Sofia, Bulgaria, hoping that life abroad will salve the wounds left by the loss of her beloved brother. Soon after arriving in this elegant East European city, however, she helps an elderly couple into a taxi—and realizes too late that she has accidentally kept one of their bags. Inside she finds an ornately carved wooden box engraved with a name: Stoyan Lazarov. Raising the hinged lid, she discovers that she is holding an urn filled with human ashes.

As Alexandra sets out to locate the family and return this precious item, she will first have to uncover the secrets of a talented musician who was shattered by oppression—and she will find out all too quickly that this knowledge is fraught with its own danger.

Kostova’s new novel is a tale of immense scope that delves into the horrors of a century and traverses the culture and landscape of this mysterious country. Suspenseful and beautifully written, it explores the power of stories, the pull of the past, and the hope and meaning that can sometimes be found in the aftermath of loss.

  1. MirandaB says:

The Highland Devil looks like he’s up at bat.

  2. Marci says:

The first 3 novels from Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series are available as a $2.99 bundle on Amazon. The Napoleonic era plus dragons!

In His Majesty’s Service is the bundle’s title.

  3. J says:

Along Came Love is a sequel for Livesay. The h/h in ACL meet at the wedding of the couple in Love on My Mind (currently selling for $1.99 on Amazon). You don’t need the first, but they’re both charming stories with interracial couples, if that’s your thing.

  4. cbackson says:

    GYBBON?

It’s like the Black Dagger Brotherhood meets primatology. Does he have a brother named Ghorilla?

  5. Chillyjen says:

So I was sick this fall. Real sick. I had a chest infection that did not respond to the antibiotics except to bless me with hives. Lots of them. During one particularly nasty three day stretch I couldn’t keep my eyes open but couldn’t really sleep either and I had the weirdest dream ever that involved an emotionally shut down diamond magnate, a post-apocalyptic world with a plucky gal and a shape shifting dragon, and a bunch of medieval scots scampering about. All overlain with a fast talking funny lady and snippets of Bob Newhart. Turns out I drifted in and out of a lot audio books over those few days that included two Murray family books and Jenny Lawson’s book. I can’t speak to the particulars of any of those books but it was good times (although I was disappointed to figure out the ‘dream’ was not an expression of my awesome subconscious but rather just a book mashup) and I plan to go back to Jenny Lawson again now that I’m lucid.

  6. Maite says:

Thanks! I’ve been eyeing Furiously Happy ever since I read Elyse’s review. (And have been going over to Jenny Lawson’s site everytime I really, really need a laugh.)

I’m on the fence about the Kostova one. I read The Historian, and I’m still wondering how can anyone make Dracula boring. Can The Bitchery comment on this one?

  7. Wait, what? says:

The Highland Devil cover guy does look like Jake Gyllenhaal – crossed with Emilio Estevez 🙂
