However, other readers say you’ll probably be more invested in the characters if you’ve read the previous books in the Love at Stake series.

I love the Charis Michaels Brides of Belgravia series, but haven’t been interested in the Bachelor Lords of London books based on the samples. The former has women looking for marriages of convenience where the men sail off and let them do independent women things, which I am all about. Plus the books have simultaneous rather than consecutive timelines, which I always find interesting.
Book 2 in Brides of Belgravia, All Dressed in White, is $1.99 as well – enthusiastic rec from me not least of which because the author did research to find an overseas trade the hero could do that didn’t involve slavery. Also IIRC there is some sexual trauma in the heroine’s past but I think the hero is very thoughtful and sensitive about it.
