Devil in Spring

RECOMMENDED: Devil in Spring by Lisa Kleypas is $1.99! So many readers were looking forward to this book when it first released, and Carrie gave it a B+:
Devil in Spring was so delightful that I read it slowly because I had to take frequent squee breaks. I truly cannot sufficiently express how overjoyed this book made me. That said, I don’t think it will be everyone’s catnip, because the main character sometimes seems overly young and naïve, even given her character quirks.
An eccentric wallflower…
Most debutantes dream of finding a husband. Lady Pandora Ravenel has different plans. The ambitious young beauty would much rather stay at home and plot out her new board game business than take part in the London Season. But one night at a glittering society ball, she’s ensnared in a scandal with a wickedly handsome stranger.
A cynical rake…
After years of evading marital traps with ease, Gabriel, Lord St. Vincent, has finally been caught-by a rebellious girl who couldn’t be less suitable. In fact, she wants nothing to do with him. But Gabriel finds the high-spirited Pandora irresistible. He’ll do whatever it takes to possess her, even if their marriage of convenience turns out to be the devil’s own bargain.
A perilous plot…
After succumbing to Gabriel’s skilled and sensuous persuasion, Pandora agrees to become his bride. But soon she discovers that her entrepreneurial endeavors have accidentally involved her in a dangerous conspiracy-and only her husband can keep her safe. As Gabriel protects her from their unknown adversaries, they realize their devil’s bargain may just turn out to be a match made in heaven…

The English Wife by Lauren Willig is $2.99! This is historical fiction with a mystery element, and I love this cover. Some readers found the plot a bit hard to follow. However, others love the dialogue and layers to story. Have you read this one?
From the New York Times bestselling author, Lauren Willig, comes this scandalous Gilded Age novel full of family secrets, affairs, and even murder.
Annabelle and Bayard Van Duyvil live a charmed life: he’s the scion of an old Knickerbocker family, she grew up in a Tudor manor in England, they had a whirlwind romance in London, they have three year old twins on whom they dote, and he’s recreated her family home on the banks of the Hudson and renamed it Illyria. Yes, there are rumors that she’s having an affair with the architect, but rumors are rumors and people will gossip. But then Bayard is found dead with a knife in his chest on the night of their Twelfth Night Ball, Annabelle goes missing, presumed drowned, and the papers go mad.
Bay’s sister, Janie, forms an unlikely alliance with a reporter to uncover the truth, convinced that Bay would never have killed his wife, that it must be a third party, but the more she learns about her brother and his wife, the more everything she thought she knew about them starts to unravel. Who were her brother and his wife, really? And why did her brother die with the name George on his lips?

Semiosis by Sue Burke is $2.99! This scifi novel was featured in a previous Hide Your Wallet. Readers love all the science-y aspects of this book, while others felt it dragged down some of the momentum. It has a 3.9 star rating on Goodreads. This has been on my TBR pile for a while, though I heard the audiobook is great.
In this character driven novel of first contact by debut author Sue Burke, human survival hinges on an bizarre alliance.
Only mutual communication can forge an alliance with the planet’s sentient species and prove that mammals are more than tools.
Forced to land on a planet they aren’t prepared for, human colonists rely on their limited resources to survive. The planet provides a lush but inexplicable landscape—trees offer edible, addictive fruit one day and poison the next, while the ruins of an alien race are found entwined in the roots of a strange plant. Conflicts between generations arise as they struggle to understand one another and grapple with an unknowable alien intellect.

Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst is $1.99! This is a YA lesbian romance and part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. Carrie read this one and gave it a C+ in a Lightning Review:
I liked the romance, especially the way Denna imparts some common sense to Mare and Mare wakes up Denna’s rebellious side. The book has one of the most delightful last lines of all time. That said, the romance is fairly lightly sketched in the midst of political drama, and without sufficient world building the political drama is just noise. I have no sense of what these kingdoms are like or why I should care about their alliances.
Betrothed since childhood to the prince of Mynaria, Princess Dennaleia has always known what her future holds. Her marriage will seal the alliance between Mynaria and her homeland, protecting her people from other hostile lands. But Denna has a secret. She possesses an Affinity for fire—a dangerous gift for the future queen of a kingdom where magic is forbidden.
Now, Denna must learn the ways of her new home while trying to hide her growing magic. To make matters worse, she must learn to ride Mynaria’s formidable warhorses before her coronation—and her teacher is the person who intimidates her most, the prickly and unconventional Princess Amaranthine (called Mare), sister of her betrothed.
When a shocking assassination leaves the kingdom reeling, Mare and Denna reluctantly join forces to search for the culprit. As the two work together, each discovers there’s more to the other than she thought. Mare is surprised by Denna’s intelligence and bravery, while Denna is drawn to Mare’s independent streak. Soon their friendship is threatening to blossom into something more.
But with dangerous conflict brewing that makes the alliance more important than ever, acting on their feelings could be deadly. Forced to choose between their duty and their hearts, Mare and Denna must find a way to save their kingdoms—and each other.

I loved Devil in Spring so much that while reading I entered a dreamlike state where I was considering leaving my husband for Gabriel
I loved the English Wife. It is a murder-mystery with family secrets, false facades and two women trying to escape the cages in which thay are trapped by their circumstances. IIt’s one of my top five books of 2018.
Devil in Spring is one of my favorite Lisa Kleypas (my 1st favorite being Love in the Afternoon).
I *loved* Devil in Spring. Maybe because I related so much to Pandora, and I so much enjoyed her relationship with Gabriel. Easily one of my favorite Kleypas books.
Roan Parrish’s The Remaking Of Corbin Wale is on sale for 99 cents because of Chanukah. I’ve been meaning to read it for ages and started it last night and it’s so wonderful!
Moment of Fate (Moments in Time Book 5) m/m, by Karen Stivali is $.99 today. I really enjoyed the first 3.
Regency Christmas Wishes – 3 stories – Carla Kelly, Christine Merrill and Janice Preston $1.99. Carla Kelly is one of my faves!
A few books on my 2018 wishlist are on sale right now. I think they were both reviewed here or were featured on a Hide Your Wallet post.
The Phantom Tree by Nicola Cornick is $1.99
The Witch of Willow Hall by Hester Fox is $1.99
Also The Jane Austen Project by Kathleen A. Flynn and Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie are $1.99 the last time I looked on Amazon.
“Devil in the Spring” was a DNF for me. I didn’t like Pandora at all. “Devil in Winter” is one of my favorites and I had been looking forward to reading about Sebastian and Evie’s son, but I didn’t find the romance between Gabriel and Pandora to be believable. I thought that she was annoying and that he was immature.
