  • Grumpy Fake Boyfriend

Grumpy Fake Boyfriend by Jackie Lau

Grumpy Fake Boyfriend by Jackie Lau is 99c at most vendors and $2.99 at Barnes & Noble! Sarah and I wrote a joint review of this one and decided on a B-:

Amanda: There were some missteps for me, like the huge focus on finding love over a weekend getaway from everything, but I know I’ll be reading the next book by Lau. Her characters won me over.

Sarah: I absolutely agree with that – I’ll definitely read Lau’s next book. Her characters, especially their confidence and conversations, won me over, too.

I’m a pretty simple guy. When I’m not writing a science fiction novel, I’m watching a good movie or reading a book. Alone. I like my reclusive life. That is, until my only friend asks for a favor—pretend to be his baby sister’s boyfriend on a couples’ getaway. Her ex is going to be there and she needs me as a buffer.

I should have said no, but Naomi is bubbly, energetic, and beautiful. She also means everything to her brother. But now, our fake romance is starting to feel all too real, and I find myself stuck between the promise I made to my friend and risking my heart to the one woman who might actually get me…

  • The Black Lyon

The Black Lyon by Jude Deveraux

The Black Lyon by Jude Deveraux is $1.99! This is one of the first romances Deveraux published. It came out in 1980 and has Old Skool qualities, but many readers say this is the book that turned them into Deveraux fans. I will also mention that if rape is a trigger for you, avoid this book or at least read cautiously. Any Bitchery members care to add their thoughts?

A Classic Love Story of a Fearless Lord and the Woman Who Tamed Him

Darkly handsome and rich beyond imagining, the bold English conqueror was called “the Black Lyon” for his lionlike ferocity. He had no match among enemies, or women…until he met Lyonene, the green-eyed beauty whose fiery spirit equaled his own.

Through a whirlwind romance and stormy marriage, she endured every peril to be by his side, until vicious lies and jealousy drove her into danger. Now only the fierce Black Lyon can save her—for he alone has the courage to destroy the ruthless plot threatening to shatter the bond of love the Lyon and his lady vowed would never be broken…

  • The Female of the Species

The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis

RECOMMENDEDThe Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis is $1.99! All the trigger warnings for this book, by the way. However, I absolutely loved this and I gave it an A:

The Female of the Species was a cathartic read. I was often flushed with anger, crying from sadness, or amped up with girl power. It’s a powerful book and one that I’ll be talking about for a long time to come.

Edgar Award–winning author Mindy McGinnis delivers a dark and riveting contemporary YA novel that blends the unflinching honesty of Laurie Halse Anderson’s Speak with the relentless pacing and alternating perspectives of Gone Girl. A stunning, unforgettable page-turner.

Alex Craft knows how to kill someone. And she doesn’t feel bad about it.

Three years ago, when her older sister, Anna, was murdered and the killer walked free, Alex uncaged the language she knows best—the language of violence. While her own crime goes unpunished, Alex knows she can’t be trusted among other people. Not with Jack, the star athlete who wants to really know her but still feels guilty over the role he played the night Anna’s body was discovered. And not with Peekay, the preacher’s kid with a defiant streak who befriends Alex while they volunteer at an animal shelter. Not anyone.

As their senior year unfolds, Alex’s darker nature breaks out, setting these three teens on a collision course that will change their lives forever.

  • Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke is $1.99! This is historical fiction with fantasy and was made into a mini series. I’m really curious about the mini series, if anyone has ever watched it. Readers liked the detail and dialogue, but some found the ending a bit lacking.

Part of The Bloomsbury Phantastic series – three books tracing the tradition of fantasy from Edgar Allan Poe to Neil Gaiman and Susanna Clarke. Susanna Clarke’s novel is an epic tale of nineteenth-century England and the two magicians who emerge to change its history.

In the year 1806, in the midst of the Napoleonic Wars, most people believe magic to have long since disappeared from England — until the reclusive Mr Norrell reveals his powers and becomes a celebrity overnight. Another practising magician emerges: the young and daring Jonathan Strange. He becomes Norrell’s pupil and the two join forces in the war against France. But Strange is increasingly drawn to the wildest, most perilous forms of magic and soon he risks sacrificing not only his partnership with Norrell, but everything else he holds dear.

  1. Tilly says:

I was a little bummed by aspects of JS&MN the miniseries, some of the pacing felt off to me and I deeply resented what they did with Stephen Black’s character! (And their take on “thistledown hair” but I still enjoyed it

  2. DonnaMarie says:

I adored The Black Lyon back in the day. How it holds up? My copy disappeared some 20 years ago, so I’ve forgotten a lot of the details. I can sort of remember a bath scene where she had to bathe him as he was a high ranking guest. And the villiany is over the top. Still, it’s the source of one of my all-time favorite quotes:

“You’re the Black Lyon all over.”

  3. JenM says:

Molly Harper has a YA paranormal, CHANGELING, on sale for $0.99. It features a 14 YO girl who is unexpectedly discovered to be magical, and is sent to a magical academy for well-bred young female witches. I read the sample yesterday and immediately bought the book, leapfrogged it to the top of my TBR mountain, and read it last night. Although there was the usual mean-girl clique, it also included some lovely, supportive teen girl friendships and left me with a happy book buzz. The author also has another book on sale, HOW TO DATE YOUR DRAGON, a humorous PNR that is in her usual genre.

  4. Kati says:

I loved The Female of the Species but it is hard, hard, hard to read.

  5. Lexica says:

I loved the dramatization of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. It can be a good way to get into the book – even if you love slow-paced narrative with wildly digressive footnotes, JS&MN can be a bit daunting at first. I bounced off the book the first time I tried it, then watched the TV version, then had a better time with the text.

  6. Carrie White says:

I loved The Black Lyon as a high school (25 years ago) and read it again recently. HATED it. I could see what I liked about it (big, strong hero who loves the heroine right off the bat), but then he absolutely changes to an abusive, adulterous creep. Frustrating to read the heroine’s attempts to win him over when he was so scarily mentally unstable.
