Links: True Crime, Ugly Crying, & More

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Hey there, everyone! It’s Wednesday and I’m gearing up for the holidays. I fly out on Sunday for about a week of family shenanigans. Sarah and I have been setting up the site with some neat stuff next week, so we hope you’re all excited!

Want the scoop on Jasmine Guillory’s next book? Bustle has all the details, including the cover. What do you think?

If you’re a true crime fan like I am, check out Longreads Best of 2018: Crime Reporting. Some of the stories I was familiar with, while others were fascinating and completely new to me. One was even made into a This American Life episode, which I then promptly listened to.

Want a heartwarming story? Read this one about a pop-up children’s bookstore that only sells diverse titles:

When Aimée Felone and David Stevens opened their pop-up children’s bookshop in Brixton in October, featuring only books with black, Asian or minority ethnic (BAME) protagonists, they had one reaction they weren’t prepared for: a customer burst into tears. “I went and asked her if she was OK,” says Stevens. “She said she’d never seen anything quite like it, she’d picked up six books in a row and they all had brown faces on. All I could say was, ‘I’m sorry it took so long.’”

I’M NOT CRYING.

Speaking of crying, if you’re the kind of reader who loves having their heart ripped out in a romance, Frolic.Media has some recommendations for you!

Finally, I’ve been watching this Saturday Night Live sketch multiple times a day since it aired. What if we had “daddy” shows, like we did dog shows?

..

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

I saw the daddy contest on SNL. I loved it! We should so have a daddy competition. Maybe the bad ones (ie deadbeat dads) would get their act together if this happens. After all, Miss America still airs. Is there currently any male pageant?

  2. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Interesting article about sex, sexuality, and the accuracy of “The Favourite”:

Thanks to Amanda for the bookstore link. I am not crying either.
And DiscoDollyDeb, that article you recommended is really good. I will have to mull it over a while.
Particularly that comment on how so many intimate relationships we used to have that have now collapsed solely into marriage.
