  • Nimona

    Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson is $1.99! This graphic novel comes highly recommended and if you dug Carrie’s Lumberjanes review, you might consider picking this one up. Some were a little confused by the end to this graphic novel, but many loved the blend of science, action, and humor. Have you read this one?

The graphic novel debut from rising star Noelle Stevenson, based on her beloved and critically acclaimed web comic, which Slate awarded its Cartoonist Studio Prize, calling it “a deadpan epic.”

Nemeses! Dragons! Science! Symbolism! All these and more await in this brilliantly subversive, sharply irreverent epic from Noelle Stevenson. Featuring an exclusive epilogue not seen in the web comic, along with bonus conceptual sketches and revised pages throughout, this gorgeous full-color graphic novel is perfect for the legions of fans of the web comic and is sure to win Noelle many new ones.

Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren’t the heroes everyone thinks they are.

But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona’s powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.

  • Truly

    Truly by Ruthie Knox

READER RECOMMENDEDTruly by Ruthie Knox is $1.99! This is a contemporary romance and a former RITA finalist. Reader Pam G. submitted a great guest review for Truly:

Over the years, the Bitchery has offered up suggestions for authors and books that should be offered to readers with a bias against romance. As far as I’m concerned, Truly proves yet again that a romance novel can be the equal of the finest writing out there. Plotting, style, characterization, complexity, profundity—Knox has it all. The only formula here is quality.

May Fredericks hates New York. Which is fair enough, since New York seems to hate her back. After relocating to Manhattan from the Midwest to be with her long-distance boyfriend, NFL quarterback Thor Einarsson, May receives the world’s worst marriage proposal, stabs the jerk with a shrimp fork, and storms off alone—only to get mugged. Now she’s got no phone, no cash, and no friends. How’s a nice girl supposed to get back to safe, sensible Wisconsin?

Frankly, Ben Hausman couldn’t care less. Sure, it’s not every day he meets a genuine, down-to-earth woman like May—especially in a dive in the Village—but he’s recovering from an ugly divorce that cost him his restaurant. He wants to be left alone to start over and become a better man. Then again, playing the white knight to May’s sexy damsel in distress would be an excellent place to start—if only he can give her one very good reason to love New York.

Once a Rebel by Mary Jo Putney

Once a Rebel by Mary Jo Putney is $1.99! This is the second book in the historical romance Rogues Redeemed series. It’s also a friends to lovers romance! Readers enjoyed the setting of the War of 1812, but others found the conflicts were too easily solved.

    A ROGUE REDEEMED

As Washington burns, Callista Brooke is trapped in the battle between her native England and her adopted homeland. She is on the verge of losing everything, including her life, when a handsome Englishman cuts through the violent crowd to claim that she is his. Lord George Gordon Audley had been Callie’s best friend, and it was to Gordon she turned in desperation to avoid a loathsome arranged marriage. But the repercussions of his gallant attempt to rescue her sent Callie packing to Jamaica, and Gordon on a one way trip to the penal colony of Australia.

  • Where the Heart Leads

Where the Heart Leads by Stephanie Laurens

Where the Heart Leads by Stephanie Laurens is $1.99! This historical romance is the first book in the Casebook of Barnaby Adair. Readers enjoyed the mystery element, but some felt it overshadowed the romance. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

Penelope Ashford, Portia Cynster’s younger sister, has grown up with every advantage – wealth, position, and beauty. Yet Penelope is anything but a typical ton miss – forceful, willful and blunt to a fault, she has for years devoted her considerable energy and intelligence to directing an institution caring for the forgotten orphans of London’s streets.

But now her charges are mysteriously disappearing. Desperate, Penelope turns to the one man she knows who might help her – Barnaby Adair.

Handsome scion of a noble house, Adair has made a name for himself in political and judicial circles. His powers of deduction and observation combined with his pedigree has seen him solve several serious crimes within the ton. Although he makes her irritatingly uncomfortable, Penelope throws caution to the wind and appears on his bachelor doorstep late one night, determined to recruit him to her cause.

Barnaby is intrigued-both by her story, and her. Her bold beauty and undeniable brains make a striking contrast to the usual insipid ton misses. And as he’s in dire need of an excuse to avoid said insipid misses, he accepts her challenge, never dreaming she and it will consume his every waking hour.

Enlisting the aid of Inspector Basil Stokes of the fledgling Scotland Yard, they infiltrate the streets of London’s notorious East End. But as they unravel the mystery of the missing boys, they uncover the trail of a criminal embedded in the very organization recently created to protect all Londoners. And that criminal knows of them and their efforts, and is only too ready to threaten all they hold dear, including their new-found knowledge of the intrigues of the human heart.

  1. Cat C says:

Truly holds a special place in my heart for having a big, tall, space-taking-up heroine who owns it AND whose dimensions (particularly, weight) are never specified. Thank you Ruthie Knox <3

  2. marjorie says:

Nimona is a spectacular achievement. I personally prefer to read graphic novels in print form than digitally though. I also would warn readers that I think it’s a children’s book — middle-grade to YA. That said, it’s SO smart and funny and weird and LGBT/size/gender/racially inclusive. When I read it with my younger daughter, I pointed out that Nimona could choose to look any way she wanted, and she chose to be short, hefty, and strong. The story wrestles with ethics, with what loyalty means, with how we define family. And the art is so lively, funny, kinetic. As you can tell, I love and admire this book in equal measure.

  3. Ren Benton says:

I love Ruthie Knox. I try to have an unread book of hers in reserve for reeeeeeeeeally dark times because they’re good for the soul.

If you’d rather read about dark times than stave them off, Tor is giving away Myke Cole’s The Armored Saint for your young lesbian in power armor consideration, only via the following link:

  4. hng23 says:

Many thumbs up for Nimona, for all the reasons Marjorie noted.

  5. Sarah Peach says:

Truly is one of my all-time favorite books. I am forever thankful to SBTB for leading me to it. I

  6. spelbows says:

Nimona, omg. Hard agree on the “preferring comics physically” but if a 1.99 digital copy gets you to read even a dozen pages of Nimona, WORTH IT.

  7. BKmeggie says:

Yes yes yes to Nimona and @marjorie perfectly captured it above. While it’s marketed as YA, adults will love it too.

  8. Peggy says:

    @ amazon

The Art of Starving by Sam Miller (YA, LGBTQ, won 2017 Andre Norton award for outstanding YA scifi/fantasy, reviews say “funny and haunting”). $1.99

Why Not Tonight by Susan Mallery (Happily Inc #3) $1.99

The Persian Boy by Mary Renault $1.99. (Since it’s #2 in Alexander the Great series, there is no HEA. Still a great read!)

  9. JJB says:

I love Nimona! No confusion at all. It’s a in HC on my comics shelf–it wasn’t a lot when I got it and def well worth it. (However, if anyone is considering going for a physical copy, someone I gave it to said the text was too small for her. It was fine for me, but if that’s an issue maybe the digital is preferable…)

(And funnily enough, I never could get into Lumberjanes at all.)

  10. Ren Benton says:

Bird Box by Josh Malerman is $2.99. One of my Top 10 for the year. End-of-the-world story in which looking at the monsters means doom, so the characters are mostly trapped inside with the windows boarded up and blindfolded when there’s no choice but to leave their bunker. People are ultimately more dangerous than the monsters. It’s not graphically gory because you don’t SEE much of the horror as it takes place, which makes it all the more remarkable that it’s so unsettling. All the warnings for children in peril, animals dying, and the primary cause of death being suicide.

  11. kkw says:

My (at the time) 9 year old nephews both adored Nimona, and I enjoyed it far more than most YA. Could be a great gift idea?

  12. Allie says:

I also love Nimona! I started reading when it was a webcomic and bought it almost immediately when it was published as a graphic novel. Then I made my husband read it and he loved it too.

For anyone who’s read it but isn’t familiar with Noelle’s Tumblr, she posted several AU doodles and a bunch of fanart under her Nimona tag.
