Slouch Witch

RECOMMENDED: Slouch Witch by Helen Harper is 99c at Amazon! I bough this urban fantasy when we featured it on sale last year, and even convinced Sarah to buy it. We squeed over it in a previous podcast, but are really eh on the next book. The first has a non-cliffhanger ending, but it wasn’t satisfying in terms of the romance.
Hard Work Will Pay Off Later. Laziness Pays Off Now.
Let’s get one thing straight – Ivy Wilde is not a heroine. In fact, she’s probably the last witch in the world who you’d call if you needed a magical helping hand. If it were down to Ivy, she’d spend all day every day on her sofa where she could watch TV, munch junk food and talk to her feline familiar to her heart’s content.
However, when a bureaucratic disaster ends up with Ivy as the victim of a case of mistaken identity, she’s yanked very unwillingly into Arcane Branch, the investigative department of the Hallowed Order of Magical Enlightenment. Her problems are quadrupled when a valuable object is stolen right from under the Order’s noses.
It doesn’t exactly help that she’s been magically bound to Adeptus Exemptus Raphael Winter. He might have piercing sapphire eyes and a body which a cover model would be proud of but, as far as Ivy’s concerned, he’s a walking advertisement for the joyless perils of too much witch-work.
And if he makes her go to the gym again, she’s definitely going to turn him into a frog.

The Labyrinth Gate by Kate Elliot is $1.99! This is a fantasy novel with some romantic elements, given that the book follows a married couple trying to escape a magical world. This was published in the late 80s and rather early in Elliot’s writing career. Take that however you’d like.
Transported to a magic-filled alternate world, a newlywed couple must find the treasure hidden in a labyrinth city if they ever wish to return home.
With marriage comes change, and for Sanjay and Chryse, that change is literally world altering. After their wedding reception, they accidentally drop a gift—a pack of special tarot cards—onto an elevator floor. The cards scatter, the lights go out, and all at once, they find themselves transported to Anglia. It’s a strange parallel world not unlike Victorian England, but matriarchal in nature and shaped by powerful sorcery.
While fleeing a riot in the streets, the pair is rescued by aristocrats Julian and Kate, the first of many new friends and adventures. To get home, they must find a treasure in the labyrinth city of Pariam—a quest that becomes ever more daunting as it attracts the attention of the evil Princess Blessa. Wonderfully conceived and full of memorable characters, The Labyrinth Gate is vibrant fantasy on every level.

In Search of Scandal by Susanne Lord is $2.06 at Amazon! What an odd price. This is the first book in the London Explorers series and seems to blend historical romance with a bit of adventure. Many loved the botanist hero, but felt the book didn’t deliver when it comes to adventuring shenanigans.

Just a note about The Labyrinth Gate–it was originally published under the name Alis Rasmussen. Kate Elliott is a pen name, and reissues of her older stuff has been using that name. 🙂
I read that Helen Harper series last year. All the books have high ratings, but I don’t get the hype. The books weren’t bad, but they came nowhere near meeting my expectations.
Maybe I’m the exception, tho.
I really liked the slouch witch books. They reminded me a bit of the Innkeeper series by Ilona Andrews but with more humor.
I love love Susanne Lord. I bought this book because I saw Courtney Milan recommended it and it’s one of my favorites over the last five years. This author deserves more acclaim. What I loved about it was that the hero and heroine were more than they seemed on first glance. There is also a scene I read with my heart in my throat, and I mean that in the best way. Buy the book!
Just wanted to say I recently borrowed the 2nd book in the Slouch Witch series and enjoyed it.
I was very hesitant because of the reason you all didn’t like it and was waiting for that specific scene. When it came up, I think I wouldn’t have picked up on it if you hadn’t pointed it out. From the way the character describes the reality show, there are definite boxes for each contestant and they aren’t allowed to deviate from that. I saw her comment as a put down on that aspect of media rather than a lack of thoughtfulness from the author or character.
Spoiler, 2nd book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger
