An Untamed State

An Untamed State by Roxane Gay is $1.99! This is a highly recommended piece of contemporary fiction. It’s harrowing and emotional as it chronicles a woman’s kidnapping, rescue, and recovery. This is Gay’s debut novel and there are definitely some trigger warnings for this book. For those who have read it, what did you think?
Roxane Gay is a powerful new literary voice whose short stories and essays have already earned her an enthusiastic audience. In An Untamed State, she delivers an assured debut about a woman kidnapped for ransom, her captivity as her father refuses to pay and her husband fights for her release over thirteen days, and her struggle to come to terms with the ordeal in its aftermath.
Mireille Duval Jameson is living a fairy tale. The strong-willed youngest daughter of one of Haiti’s richest sons, she has an adoring husband, a precocious infant son, by all appearances a perfect life. The fairy tale ends one day when Mireille is kidnapped in broad daylight by a gang of heavily armed men, in front of her father’s Port au Prince estate. Held captive by a man who calls himself The Commander, Mireille waits for her father to pay her ransom. As it becomes clear her father intends to resist the kidnappers, Mireille must endure the torments of a man who resents everything she represents.
An Untamed State is a novel of privilege in the face of crushing poverty, and of the lawless anger that corrupt governments produce. It is the story of a willful woman attempting to find her way back to the person she once was, and of how redemption is found in the most unexpected of places. An Untamed Stateestablishes Roxane Gay as a writer of prodigious, arresting talent.

Royal Scandal by Marquita Valentine is $1.99! This is a contemporary romance that I mentioned in January 2017’s Hide Your Wallet. Readers say this romance takes some suspension of disbelief, but if you can do that, you’re in for a fun-filled romance.
Fairy tales do come true—and so do tabloid scandals! Bestselling author Marquita Valentine kicks off a juicy contemporary romance series with a novel about a prince whose best-laid plans go deliciously awry when he marries the maid next door.
Forced to flee to the United States with his siblings after their parents’ assassination, Crown Prince Colin Sinclair takes it upon himself to become the caretaker of his family while hiding out near Charlotte, North Carolina. But after a decade in hiding, the secret’s out and Parliament demands that Colin wed a princess of their choosing. Unwilling to play their game, Colin decides to marry an American instead, and he has the perfect candidate in mind.
As a home-service professional, Della Hughes doesn’t believe in storybook endings. But when her best friend and secret crush reveals that he’s a flesh-and-blood prince, she doesn’t know what to think. Still, she’ll do anything for Colin, including becoming his wife—in name only, of course. But when their plans to stay purely platonic go by the wayside, their fake honeymoon turns all too real. After a week of white-hot nights, Della can no longer deny her feelings—not with a happily ever after so tantalizingly close.

You Never Forget Your First Earl by Ella Quinn is 99c! This is a historical romance and part of The Worthingtons series. RHG gave this a C+ in a Lightning Review. She wished there were more conflict in the book, but recommends this if you’re in the mood for a fluffy, uncomplicated read.
Within the Worthingtons’ extended family circle, laughter and romance rule, and a young lady never settles for less than true love…
With her three good friends all recently married, Elizabeth Turley is ready for some husband-hunting of her own. One gentleman in particular sparks her interest. Geoffrey, Earl of Harrington is tall, handsome, and dashing. He’s also just a bit too sure of himself. But Elizabeth has observed enough about the rules of attraction to pique the earl’s attention. Yet once she has it, the discovery of a troubling secret taints her future happiness.
Lord Harrington must marry or lose a prestigious position in Brussels, and pretty, well-connected Elizabeth fits his needs admirably. But could it be that he has underestimated his bride? She doesn’t bat an eye in the face of the danger they encounter overseas. She’s strong-willed, intelligent, and more enticing each day—yet also more indifferent to him. Now Geoffrey faces his greatest challenge: to woo and win his own wife, or risk losing her for good.

The Infamous Heir by Elizabeth Michels is $2.41 at Amazon! What a strange price. This is book one in the Spare Heirs series. It features a prize-fighting hero who suddenly takes over his brother’s title of nobility. Readers wanted more chemistry between the hero and heroine, but many really loved the hero. I mean, based on the book’s description, who wouldn’t?
The Spare Heirs Society Cordially Invites You to Meet Ethan Moore: The Scoundrel
Lady Roselyn Grey’s debut has finally arrived, and of course, she has every flounce and flutter planned. She’ll wear the perfect gowns and marry the perfect gentleman…that is, if the formerly disinherited brother of the man she intends to marry doesn’t ruin everything first.
Ethan Moore is a prize-fighting second son and proud founding member of the Spare Heirs Society-and that’s all he ever should have been. But, in an instant, his brother’s noble title is his, the eyes of the ton are upon him, and the lady he’s loved for years would rather meet him in the boxing ring than the ballroom.
He’s faced worse. With the help of his Spare Heirs brotherhood, Ethan’s certain he can get to the bottom of his brother’s unexpected demise and win the impossible lady who has haunted his dreams for as long as he can remember…

Martha Wells of recent Murderbot fame has a fantasy backlist, several of which are currently $2.99-$3.99: WHEEL OF THE INFINITE, CITY OF BONES, THE DEATH OF THE NECROMANCER, THE WIZARD HUNTERS, and THE ELEMENT OF FIRE. Several of them are set in the same kingdom but apparently stand alone, except for the one that’s a first-in-series.
IRON CAST by Destiny Soria is $2.99. Jazz Age blood mage illusionists.
As someone who has read Martha’s entire backlist, I would like to add on to Ren’s sale announcement by mentioning that Wheel of The Infinite in particular has a nice sub-plot of romance between a woman of somewhat more mature years, and a younger man. This may be relevant to some interests here. 🙂
The Wizard Hunters is the first in trilogy, and in books 2 & 3 there is a very light bit of romantic elements which may also appeal.

12/19/18 “Compulsory: A Murderbot Diaries Story” is in the January issue of Wired Magazine. This is a 1000 word flash fiction piece that is a prequel to the novella series. It’s also available online at the magazine’s web site.
Re, Martha Wells’ backlist – I’ve really enjoyed the ones that I’ve read, The Cloud Roads and THE ELEMENT OF FIRE. THE ELEMENT OF FIRE has a pretty good audio version too.
The Afterlife of Holly Chase (which you guys reviewed this week) is $1.99 on Amazon right now. Not sure if it’s the usual price or not, but it was certainly enough to get me (with the excellent review!).
