The Bride

RECOMMENDED: The Bride by Julie Garwood is $1.99 at Amazon! This is one of my favorite historical romances and was one of my gateway reads to the genre, if you’ve listened to the What Made Us Romance Readers podcast episode. It has a 4.2-star rating on Goodreads!
By edict of the king, the mighty Scottish laird Alec Kincaid must take an English bride. His choice was Jamie, youngest daughter of Baron Jamison…a feisty, violet-eyed beauty. Alec ached to touch her, to tame her, to possess her…forever. But Jamie vowed never to surrender to this highland barbarian.
He was everything her heart warned against—an arrogant scoundrel whose rough good looks spoke of savage pleasures. And thought Kincaid’s scorching kisses fired her blood, she brazenly resisted him…until one rapturous moment quelled their clash of wills, and something far more dangerous than desire threatened to conquer her senses…

The Outcast Prince by Shona Husk is 99c at Amazon! This is a paranormal romance with a fae hero and it’s the first book in the Court of Annwyn series. Reader thought the relationship moved at a pretty quick pace and some of the dialogue was eye-roll worthy. However, others loved Husk’s worldbuilding and the setting of Charleston.
Caspian Mort can feel the history in anything he touches, a gift he inherited from his father, the Crown Prince of Annwyn. Devastated over his ex-wife’s infidelity, Caspian has withdrawn from human contact except when working as an antiques dealer.
While assessing the contents of the historic Callaway House he encounters the beautiful Lydia Callaway and senses that her home is haunted by a banished fairy. But what does the dangerous exile want? Unbeknownst to Lydia, she’s the owner of the last remaining portal to Annwyn—a mirror hidden somewhere in the house. To keep Lydia safe, Caspian will have to divulge the secrets of his heritage, and risk losing his heart again.

RECOMMENDED: Monstress #1 by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takena is 99c! Carrie did a Lightning Review of issue one of this graphic novel and gave it a B+. She also really loved the artwork. This is for issue one and not volume one. Here are Carrie’s overall thoughts:
This is a stunningly illustrated story about many levels of autonomy and freedom. I’m not entirely sure what’s going on, but I can’t wait to find out more.
Steampunk meets Kaiju in this original fantasy epic for mature readers, as young Maika risks everything to control her psychic link with a monster of tremendous power, placing her in the center of a devastating war between human and otherworldly forces.

Wicked Ride by Rebecca Zanetti is $1.99 at Amazon! This is a paranormal romance with a cop heroine and an immortal Irish biker hero. I know we’ve debated about motorcycle clubs in the past and the book’s description makes mention that this particular MC is up to some pretty rough stuff, regardless of the hero’s involvement. However, many readers loved the chemistry between the very much alpha hero and the heroine. Sound interesting to anyone?
Alexandra Monzelle is a hard-fighting, heat-packing Seattle vice cop, and she’s not much interested in being protected. Her short skirt and sex-kitten heels are tools to lure her suspects into talking about the deadly new drug hitting the streets. She can take care of herself and then some. Unfortunately, she can’t seem to get that through to Kellach Dunne.
Kellach is a fresh import from Dublin, and he’s landed at the heart of a vicious motorcycle club that deals in guns, narcotics, and mayhem. He’s all male, all rough power—and all interference in her damn investigation. Maybe he’s one of the good guys. Maybe not. Lex knows an affair with an immortal like him would risk everything. No matter how delicious he looks…

I’m sharing the good news here, as I’m about to burst with happiness and cannot keep it to myself.
First, Lois McMaster Bujold is releasing a (long) Lakewater novella (12 years after The Sharing Knife) in 2019.
Second, Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series is releasing as audiobooks in the European market. The first book is out now (titled Temeraire instead of His Majesty’s Dragon, but who cares, it’s still Simon Vance narrating!), and books 2 & 3 seem to release in January and February, so I’m hoping and praying that they’ll continue the monthly release rate until they’ve done the whole series. (OMG, I’ve only been able to listen to books 1-5 and I tried reading book 6 but it just isn’t the same without Simon’s narration so I gave up on buying the kindle books because I want Simon… Damn geo blocking!)
I’ll just be in my corner, doing the pee-pee dance of anticipation, don’t mind me…
“I’m not entirely sure what’s going on” is a comment I’ve heard about Monstress even from people who’ve read thru vol 2 or 3, and I’m starting to feel like it’s a real issue with the series. I’m stuck midway thru vol 2 and not feeling enthused to keep going. I know it’s good and interesting in a lot of ways–and the art is awesome…but it’s always been hard for me to keep the who’s who of it all straight and to just…follow it. It’s also incredibly dark, of course, which I’m not always up for.
I hate to rec against it, but…yeah. It’s definitely not for everyone.
Oh, but if anyone’s looking for a fantasy adventure GN with great art and cool looking animals, starring female characters, (that is a good bit less gory– which isn’t hard: it’s still for adults) I really enjoyed vol 1 of Isola by Brenden Fletcher and Karl Kerschl. Summary is “An evil spell has been cast on the Queen of Maar and her Captain of the Guard will do anything to reverse it. Their only hope lies on an island half a world away–a place known in myth as Isola, land of the dead.”
I read the B&N exclusive version of vol 1 which includes at the end some short comics that were released with other titles (so they’re not part of any issue proper) & give some backstory to the main characters. (The story, fyi, begins with them already on the road and the queen already cursed.) I really felt like those shorts added a lot. Plus, the B&N cover is an eye-grabbing beautiful pink that made me pull it off the shelf.
(& a little spoiler…there is romance :))
I just received volume three of MONSTRESS in paperback and, while I agree with JJB’s reservations above (and also spent a lot of trying to figure out what’s going on), I still am invested enough to keep reading. If I ever understand fully, I’ll be sure to report back.
And @RenBenton: SOLOMON’S SEAL by Skyla Dawn Cameron is on sale at Amazon US for .99. After your recommendation the other day, I added it to my wishlist. Today, wish granted. Thanks.
Finally, Ilona Andrews MAGIC BINDS (#9) is also on sale for 1.99 at Amazon US.
@ms bookjunkie: Thanks for the heads up on the new Sharing Knife book. I listened to the series several years ago and enjoyed it.
I also listened to the Temeraire series. I couldn’t seem to get into the books at all until I tried the audio, and I simply loved Simon Vance’s narration. I glommed the whole series back-to-back. I can’t believe you’ve been denied them until now. Enjoy!
N.K. Jemisin’s short story collection How Long ’til Black Future Month is a KDD. $4.99, but it only came out about a month ago.
N.R. Walker’s Private Charter (m/m) is on sale for 99 cents on Amazon.
