    Baking cookies

  2. Susan says:

Looking at Christmas (and Hanukkah) lights. There are neighborhoods near me that go All. Out. And there’s one that has luminaria throughout a very large development with almost full participation. It’s lovely.

  3. lorenet says:

Cowboy Christmas/Marketplace. It is NFR season here in Las Vegas. Cowboy Marketplace is a large flea market filled with stuff I don’t need. I try to go every year.

Headphones are my weakness. It is also a way to keep the annoying people at work from disturbing me.

  4. Katherine C. says:

My favorite holiday tradition is going to midnight mass on Christmas Eve and then driving around to look at lights.

  5. Amanda Lee says:

Watching my favorite Christmas movies with a mug of hot chocolate and my cat. Best way to celebrate the season.

  6. Chris says:

My favorite tradition is decorating the Christmas tree.

  7. Cat says:

My mother’s family is from Pittsburgh so we get nut rolls for christmas eve & christmas breakfasts. Look it up! It is the greatest, most delicious of holiday traditions.

  8. KarenF says:

My favorite holiday tradition is a shopping tradition – every year a friend and I pick a small town (generally within a 1 hour drive of Minneapolis), get up early on a Saturday morning, and drive to that town. We find a local bakery for breakfast (which one year lead to us getting to eavesdrop on a table of elderly men talking about ice fishing and politics), then do as much of our Christmas shopping as possible in the locally owned boutiques.

And of course since this is Minnesota, it’s generally snowy and crisp and pretty. (One year we did have to cancel because we got two feet of snow – but usually there is “just enough” snow.)

  9. Nicole L says:

One of my favourite holiday traditions is baking and decorating gingerbread cookies with family and friends.

  10. LauraL says:

@ Cat – Nut rolls were a big part of holidays with my grandparents. Yum.

I love sending and receiving holiday cards which, sadly, is starting to wane as a tradition.

Reading about everyone’s traditions has added joy to this snowy day. Happy Hanukkah!

  11. Castiron says:

My mom’s birthday is in mid-December, and when I was a kid, we often put the tree up on her birthday. It’s now the tradition for me and my kids; Grandma’s birthday is when the tree goes up.

  12. elaing8 says:

My favorite tradition is decorating the house and baking cookies with my nieces and nephews.

  13. vasha says:

Family tradition, w/ my parents & brother, decorating the Xmas tree. We generally add a new ornament each yeat but keep old ones too. And when we take each one out we say where we found it, bought it, were given it. There are some from before I was born. Also some absolutely hideous ones that kids made, which we don’t put on the tree, but keep & reminisce about anyway. (My brother seed a brown lumpy thing which was supposed to be an elephant. My contivurion was Styrofoam balls with piece of cloth stuck to them w/pins, courtesy of Brownie scouts.)

  14. Jennifer in GA says:

I really love Christmas Eve. Lots of party food, having out with family, and reading the story of Christmas from the book of Luke.

  15. These look adorable!

  16. Abigail says:

On Christmas day, my mom, sister, grandma, and I make press cookies. We always have camels, stars, wreaths, trees, and spirals. They are like crack and even though we could make them at any time during the year, we never do. It’s my favorite thing we do for the holidays. 🙂

  17. Lynnd says:

My favourite holiday tradition is getting together with my two best girlfriends and their partners around Christmastime. Along with laughter and a game of charades, each of us brings a slideshow of a few pictures of the places that we have travelled (near or far) during the year and we get to learn of each other’s adventures.

  18. Arethusa says:

My favourite holiday tradition is eating and resting. LOL. That’s it. I love that I get invited to go to multiple Christmas dinners. And I don’t have to worry about work for a bit. It’s great.

  19. Rhiannon says:

In our interfaith family, I feel like the candle lighting becomes the centering event on Chanukah, which I love. We travel later in the month to see family and the years we haven’t traveled/spent it together were hard.

  20. Another Kate says:

Favourite holiday tradition? Making cinnamon bread with my nephews and niece for Christmas morning breakfast. (Though this tradition has evolved to become an “anytime Aunt Kate visits” tradition rather than strictly Christmas!)

  21. Cheryl Rosbak says:

The city I live in is of largely German heritage, and so the Christmas season officially kicks off with the Christkindl Market in early December. Even if we don’t buy anything we always go to listen to the live music, eat potato pancakes, and admire the crafts. One of these years I’ll remember to buy skates so I can do that, too.

  22. PatriciaM says:

For Christmas, my sisters and families rent a house for a few days and spend time together. A couple sister live nearby and visit but it is a very good time to make sure I reconnect with family.

  23. Melinda says:

My favorite holiday tradition is my husband and I watching holiday movies together. Gremlins, Die Hard, Love Actually, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Nightmare Before Christmas, Grinch, Home Alone, and Scrooged. We decorate sugar cookies and play board games. It’s kind of the best.

  24. AlliK says:

My husband and I throw a Hanukkah party every year. We invite friends over for a big, casual dinner of latkes and other food. Even though my hsband’s family is from India, and so he didn’t grow up eating latkes, he is the one who does all the latke frying. This time of year I refer to him as the latke king.

  25. Joy says:

My favorite adult tradition is going to see the Trans-Siberian Orchestra show every Christmas season. This year was our 13th year attending out of the last 16. 🙂

My favorite tradition from my childhood was putting out cookies, carrots, and milk for Santa and his reindeer.

  26. Heather M says:

My favorite holiday thing to do is hang out around my brother’s fire pit on Thanksgiving making smores.

And this one’s new but it’s become a tradition- I’m alone on Christmas, and for the past two years I’ve ended up spending it watching Yuri on Ice, which I’m definitely going to continue.

  27. EllenM says:

Every year on Christmas my family watches the super-short animated version of the Rosemary Wells book “Morris’ Disappearing Bag.” When the VHS wore out my mom went to great lengths to find a DVD version. We all know all the words and say them along with the animation and its wonderful.

  28. Maggie P says:

We read A Christmas Carol for five nights, so the final chapter is on Christmas Day.

  29. Heather RR says:

We subscribe to the Hallmark channel only during the holidays and my husband and I binge the cheesy movies like crazy. NO HATE WATCHING ALLOWED. lol

  30. Suzy K says:

My favorite Xmas tradition? picking out presents for family & friends…. but NOT going to the post office to mail them!!

  31. Mekaela says:

My sister and I have a tradition since we were kids of rearranging these old ceramic star NOEL candle holders to spell LEON 🙂 I also like playing an ornament my mom repainted to look like me on the first night we unpack all the Christmas decorations.

  32. Kam says:

Celebrating St. Nick’s. When we were kids we’d hang a stocking (usually one of my dad’s tube socks) on December 5 (tonight!)and wake up to see these white socks bulging with an apple, an orange and some little trinket. It was like a bonus Christmas!

  33. Azure says:

We don’t have a family tradition exactly, but I just love getting together with my loved ones and spending time together.

  34. JennyOH says:

Playing dreidl – any tradition that involves eating chocolate is a fave.

  35. Christine says:

Singing Christmas carols together as a family. We wait until the neighbors leave for their annual visit to Grandma because man, we sound terrible.

  36. Liv says:

Baking around the winter holidays, especially my grandmother’s cheese cracker family recipe, delicious!

  37. Trix says:

I always enjoy the holiday baking, and I look forward to the homemade tamales family friends bring on Christmas Eve…

  38. susan says:

When the holidays roll around, I get the urge to bake, which is not normal for me since I am more of a cooker than a baker. But every year I get obsessed with something–this year it is pumpkin bread with walnuts and chocolate chips.

  39. Lex says:

Rewatching our collection of Pride & Prejudice(s), Bride & Prejudice, P&P (LDS comedy), with pots of tea and biscuits. #sisterhood

  40. Tina says:

Buying farm fresh egg nog. I’m glad it’s seasonal though. That stuff is calorically equivalent to drinking gravy.
