  • As You Wish

As You Wish by Cary Elwes

As You Wish by Cary Elwes is $2.99! This is a memoir about the making of The Princess Bride, which is a movie that many love (including myself). Readers say the nostalgia-factor is high and there’s even some discussion regarding Andre the Giant’s epic farts. However, some readers mention that the writing was a bit stilted at times.

From actor Cary Elwes, who played the iconic role of Westley in The Princess Bride, comes a first-person account and behind-the-scenes look at the making of the cult classic film filled with never-before-told stories, exclusive photographs, and interviews with costars Robin Wright, Wallace Shawn, Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest, and Mandy Patinkin, as well as author and screenwriter William Goldman, producer Norman Lear, and director Rob Reiner.

The Princess Bride has been a family favorite for close to three decades. Ranked by the American Film Institute as one of the top 100 Greatest Love Stories and by the Writers Guild of America as one of the top 100 screenplays of all time, The Princess Bride will continue to resonate with audiences for years to come.

Cary Elwes was inspired to share his memories and give fans an unprecedented look into the creation of the film while participating in the twenty-fifth anniversary cast reunion. In As You Wish he has created an enchanting experience; in addition to never-before seen photos and interviews with his fellow cast mates, there are plenty of set secrets, backstage stories, and answers to lingering questions about off-screen romances that have plagued fans for years!

With a foreword by Rob Reiner and a limited edition original poster by acclaimed artist Shepard Fairey, As You Wish is a must-have for all fans of this beloved film.

  • The Wicked Wallflower

The Wicked Wallflower by Maya Rodale

The Wicked Wallflower by Maya Rodale is $2.99! This is a historical romance that’s part of Rodale’s Bad Boys & Wallflowers series. The hero and heroine have a pretend engagement, and you know those always work out the way the characters intend.  Elyse reviewed the book and wound up giving it a C-, though Goodreads reviews says this is a series that gets better with each book:

I liked how Blake and Emma finally come together in the end, but getting there was a little rocky. The Wicked Wallflower wasn’t a bad book by any means, but with so many Regencies out there, it failed to stand out from the rest of the pack.

Lady Emma Avery has accidentally announced her engagement—to the most eligible man in England. As soon as it’s discovered that Emma has never actually met the infamously attractive Duke of Ashbrooke, she’ll no longer be a wallflower; she’ll be a laughingstock. And then Ashbrooke does something Emma never expected. He plays along with her charade.

A temporary betrothal to the irreproachable Lady Avery could be just the thing to repair Ashbrooke’s tattered reputation. Seducing her is simply a bonus. And then Emma does what he never expected: she refuses his advances. It’s unprecedented. Inconceivable. Quite damnably alluring.

London’s Least Likely to Misbehave has aroused the curiosity—among other things—of London’s most notorious rogue. Now nothing will suffice but to uncover Emma’s wanton side and prove there’s nothing so satisfying as two perfect strangers…being perfectly scandalous together.

  • The Dry

    The Dry by Jane Harper

RECOMMENDEDThe Dry by Jane Harper is $2.99! I read this after Elyse’s review and found it to be a quick read. Elyse really enjoyed this mystery and gave it an A in a Lightning Review, there is a content warning though:

The Dry is an excellent, solid mystery. I loved the setting of a rural community struggling through a drought that sets everyone on edge and amplifies tensions.

A small town hides big secrets in this atmospheric, page-turning debut mystery by an award-winning new author.

After getting a note demanding his presence, Federal Agent Aaron Falk arrives in his hometown for the first time in decades to attend the funeral of his best friend, Luke. Twenty years ago when Falk was accused of murder, Luke was his alibi. Falk and his father fled under a cloud of suspicion, saved from prosecution only because of Luke’s steadfast claim that the boys had been together at the time of the crime. But now more than one person knows they didn’t tell the truth back then, and Luke is dead.

Amid the worst drought in a century, Falk and the local detective question what really happened to Luke. As Falk reluctantly investigates to see if there’s more to Luke’s death than there seems to be, long-buried mysteries resurface, as do the lies that have haunted them. And Falk will find that small towns have always hidden big secrets.

  • A Thousand Beginnings and Endings

A Thousand Beginnings and Endings by Ellen Oh

A Thousand Beginnings and Endings is $1.99! This is a YA anthology that focuses on mythology and folklore. It includes fifteen stories by authors like Julie Kagawa, Roshani Chokshi, and more. What I think is most interesting is that after each story, there is a little note from the author on which folk tales or myths were their inspiration.

Star-crossed lovers, meddling immortals, feigned identities, battles of wits, and dire warnings. These are the stuff of fairy tale, myth, and folklore that have drawn us in for centuries.

Fifteen bestselling and acclaimed authors reimagine the folklore and mythology of East and South Asia in short stories that are by turns enchanting, heartbreaking, romantic, and passionate.

Compiled by We Need Diverse Books’s Ellen Oh and Elsie Chapman, the authors included in this exquisite collection are: Renee Ahdieh, Sona Charaipotra, Preeti Chhibber, Roshani Chokshi, Aliette de Bodard, Melissa de la Cruz, Julie Kagawa, Rahul Kanakia, Lori M. Lee, E. C. Myers, Cindy Pon, Aisha Saeed, Shveta Thakrar, and Alyssa Wong.

A mountain loses her heart. Two sisters transform into birds to escape captivity. A young man learns the true meaning of sacrifice. A young woman takes up her mother’s mantle and leads the dead to their final resting place. From fantasy to science fiction to contemporary, from romance to tales of revenge, these stories will beguile readers from start to finish. For fans of Neil Gaiman’s Unnatural Creatures and Ameriie’s New York Times–bestselling Because You Love to Hate Me.

Do yourself a favor, get the audiobook of As You Wish. *happy sigh*

  2. Elaine says:

I really enjoyed “The Dry.” It’s an interesting mystery that unravels slowly, with the protagonist returning to the hometown he was chased from and overcoming those obstacles and prejudices as he tries to find answers. Harper does a fantastic job using the story’s landscape and setting to enhance sense of loss and foreboding – really great.

  3. denise says:

Silence Fallen by Patricia Briggs is $0.99 and Magic Shifts by Ilona Andrews is $1.99 at Amazon (US).

  6. starlightarcher says:

Cary Elwes’ reading of his book, As You Wish, really is great!! While it may read somewhat stilted, listening to him read it aloud (and his impressions of his cast mates) makes it a fun and easy listen. Plus, there’s the added bonus of listening to everyone’s favorite Wesley discuss true love and sword training. It’s enough to make a grown nostalgic lady swoon a bit!!

  7. JoannaV says:

My husband and I just listened to As You Wish on a long car ride a few weeks ago (our family can quote the movie’s dialogue at length) and we both really enjoyed it. Highly recommend the audiobook (although I guess that means we didn’t get any of the pictures). But it emphasized what a labor of love the movie was and I especially enjoyed the stories of fans who have approached cast members over the years with their deep love of the film.

  8. Georgina says:

I really enjoyed the The Dry, and I think Harper’s newest novel, The Lost Man, is even better. (It’s out in Australia; next year for the US.) She’s such an incredible writer.

  9. No, the Other Anne says:

I *loved* A Thousand Beginnings and Endings. I’m a sucker for retold fairy tales and myths (total catnip), and this delivered big time, with a surprisingly satisfying amount of futurism, sf/fantasy, as well as contemporary settings. Although I read it pretty much cover to cover, the anthology format would also make it a nice, slow, quiet winter read – if you have more self-discipline than I do.
