Wintersong
RECOMMENDED: Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones is $2.99! This has some hefty Labyrinth and Phantom of the Opera vibes. There’s also a quasi-cliffhanger if you aren’t a fan of bittersweet endings. We did a fantastic podcast episode with the author and discussed her writing a heroine with a mental illness. I did a cocktail for this one, too! And…I gave it an A- grade on the site.
Beware the goblin men and the wares they sell.
All her life, nineteen-year-old Liesl has heard tales of the beautiful, mysterious Goblin King. He is the Lord of Mischief, the Ruler Underground, and the muse around which her music is composed. Yet, as Liesl helps shoulder the burden of running her family’s inn, her dreams of composition and childish fancies about the Goblin King must be set aside in favor of more practical concerns.
But when her sister Käthe is taken by the goblins, Liesl journeys to their realm to rescue her sister and return her to the world above. The Goblin King agrees to let Käthe go—for a price. The life of a maiden must be given to the land, in accordance with the old laws. A life for a life, he says. Without sacrifice, nothing good can grow. Without death, there can be no rebirth. In exchange for her sister’s freedom, Liesl offers her hand in marriage to the Goblin King. He accepts.
Down in the Underground, Liesl discovers that the Goblin King still inspires her—musically, physically, emotionally. Yet even as her talent blossoms, Liesl’s life is slowly fading away, the price she paid for becoming the Goblin King’s bride. As the two of them grow closer, they must learn just what it is they are each willing to sacrifice: her life, her music, or the end of the world.

Uncertain Magic
Uncertain Magic by Laura Kinsale is $1.99 at Amazon! Not sure if this deal is getting ready to expire or not. This was originally published in the late 80s and has since gotten a cover update. This definitely has some old skool power dynamics, that probably don’t translate well to today. But Kinsale is a favorite in the Bitchery. Have you enjoyed this one?
Roderica Delamore is an heiress and should be a prize catch—except for an embarrassing and magical secret. She has the ability to hear the thoughts of those around her and has never been able to trust anyone as a result. So she dedicates herself to raising her family’s prize Thoroughbreds and resigns herself to a life without romance—until she meets Faelan Savigar, the Earl of Iveragh, a mysterious, roguish Irishman whose thoughts are entirely closed to her unusual perceptions. She discovers that she has finally met the man she has been waiting her whole life to discover.
He is called “the Devil Earl” and is as enigmatic to everyone else as he turns out to be to Roderica. He is also impoverished, damned in society by dark rumor and innuendo, and, for all she knows, he could be a liar, a swindler, or worse, but his secrets stir her and Roderica is prepared to entrust her life—and her heart—to an enchanting stranger.

The Luck of the Bride
The Luck of the Bride by Janna MacGregor is $1.99! This is the third book in The Cavensham Heiresses series and has an enemies to lovers element. In our most recent Hide Your Wallet, RHG compares MacGregor’s writing to “a warm, fuzzy blanket.” Readers enjoyed the characters and their depth; they also say this one works fine as a standalone. However, others felt the villain was too obvious in his villainy.
Family secrets, mistaken identities…love and money make people do crazy things in The Luck of the Bride, the third Cavensham Heiresses novel.
March Lawson has never had much luck, and in a desperate move to save her family, she’s been posing as the Marquess of McCalpin. But when she’s summoned to a meeting with the Marquess himself, March expects jail time…not to be bewitched by dark hair and sapphire eyes.
Michael Cavensham, the Marquess of McCalpin and heir to the Duke of Langham, finds himself drawn to March despite the judgments from his peers. He isn’t sure he can trust March, especially since Michael has a secret that could ruin him and his family.
But society conspires to keep March and Michael apart, and when March is accused of not being who she says she is, will Michael toss her aside or fight for the woman he’s come to love?

The Trouble with Honor
The Trouble with Honor by Julia London is $1.99! This is the first book in her Cabot Sisters historical romance series. The heroine makes a deal with the hero for him to seduce her stepbrother’s bride-to-be and of course, they fall in love while he’s supposed to be wooing someone else. Readers loved the heroine, but felt the last quarter of the book didn’t fit with the rest.
Desperate times call for daring measures as Honor Cabot, the eldest stepdaughter of the wealthy Earl of Beckington, awaits her family’s ruin. Upon the earl’s death she and her sisters stand to lose the luxury of their grand home – and their place on the pedestal of society – to their stepbrother and his social-climbing fiancée. Forced to act quickly, Honor makes a devil’s bargain with the only rogue in London who can seduce her stepbrother’s fiancée out of the Cabots’ lives for good.
An illegitimate son of a duke, George Easton was born of scandal and grows his fortune through dangerous risks. But now he and Honor are dabbling in a perilous dance of seduction that puts her reputation and his jaded heart on the line. And as unexpected desire threatens to change the rules of their secret game, the stakes may become too high even for a notorious gambler and a determined, free-spirited debutante to handle.

“…she’s been posing as the Marquess of McCalpin” Is she cross-dressing, or is she posing as the MARCHIONESS of McCalpin? That’s two completely different books.
@Sandra: She’s forging letters as the Marquess.
King of Code by CD Reiss is free on Amazon, I know this has been recommended by many people in Whatcha Reading posts.

I loved Wintersong! I just finished Shadowsong, its follow up, a couple of days ago and it’s just as good.
On sale at amazon:

Disgraced witch, BDSM, f/f
Hiding in Plain Sight (Dreamspun Beyond) by Bru Baker, $1.99

I really enjoyed the other two Camp H.O.W.L. books!
And I’m a huge Kinsale fan. Uncertain Magic is not in my top five but I enjoyed it (and own it)!
Yay, thank you! I’ve heard such good things about Wintersong and have been meaning to read it.
Sometimes I randomly remember the part of that interview where she says “well his name is Bentley but I call him [pause] Gooberdog” xD
I love how reminiscent of Labyrinth Wintersong is.
My first book is also Labyrinth based, but is a retelling of an Andersen fairy tale, with more female characters.
My heroine starts out as a stroppy and fantasy-obsessed girl who wishes her family away, a wish granted by a wicked Fairy Queen (think of her as a blend of the Goblin King, the Beldam/Other Mother from Coraline, Circe, and La Belle Dame Sans Merci). The heroine enters Otherworld and spends 7 years there with a wise woman, helping her make a charm that could break her family’s curse, with the help of her three fay companions (all female). During her 7 years in Otherworld, the heroine not only fights with the fairy queen, but struggles with an internal conflict between childhood and adulthood, and fears she will never visit Otherworld or see her friends again once she grows older.
