I have been looking for this book for awhile and I can’t seem to find it any of my collections.
I’m sorry I don’t remember much and what I do remember is so confusing! I read this book a few years ago.
I remember the hero has a jealous ex who I am just going to call Jane (not her real name). Jane has a man who pines for her. I think she knows, but the hero is higher up so she stayed with the hero.
There is a hierarchy so I am thinking shifters…but could be vampires…with the hero being Alpha.
Anyways there is one scene where the heroine leaves (I am not sure why) and Janes follows her thinking it looked suspicious. By then, I think Jane was in a semi relationship with the guy who loved her. He then follows Jane as she follows the heroine because he doesn’t want her to hurt the heroine. He knows Jane really well. Something happens and the heroine is kidnapped or almost kidnapped. Jane tried to save her. I think the heroine is human.
Does anyone know this one?
Could it be Night Broken by Patricia Briggs?
I don’t know what it is, but it isn’t Night Broken. Christy the ex hates Mercy the heroine and Christy has a stalker not a lover. 😎
Christy and the stalker were in a relationship before she found out he wasn’t exactly human, which is when she went running to Adam in Night Broken. But I don’t recall Christy following Mercy at any time so it’s still not quite right.
I feel like there may be a similar storyline in one of the earlier Kate Daniels books? I know there is a lot of contention in them about Kate being “human” (she’s not a shifter, but she’s also not a regular human) and there are exes of Curran’s who hate her.
The closest match in Patricia Briggs’ books would be earlier, when Mary Jo the firefighter werewolf has allowed something to injure Mercy because she is in love with Adam, who is Alpha and Mercy’s then-boyfriend. It doesn’t match the HaBO narrative, though–Mary Jo doesn’t go to rescue Mercy, although she essentially rescues Adam from a coup attempt.
I can def recommend Patricia Briggs to anyone who hasn’t read her, but I don’t think she’s the answer here.
@Katie Lynn: I’m pretty sure it’s not a KD book. I re-read them all last summer before the last one came out. And I really can’t see Kate needing to be rescued from a kidnapper. (Hugh did stick her in a well, but she would have eventually gotten out, even without Curran’s help.)
Pretty sure it’s not a KD book. It sounds very much like the situation in As You Desire, but no shifters there (set in Egypt).
Maybe the first black dagger brotherhood? Wrath the king divorced his arranged marriage wife Marissa to marry previously thought to be human Beth. Marissa helps save the day and eventually goes on to date Butch. Definitely not KD, The only one of Currens exs to show up for more then one scene is helpless and comes back to ask Kate an annoying favor.
It sounds like a Dana Marie Bell, maybe Halle Puma 1, “The Wallflower”? There’s an ex who becomes the heroine of a later book.

It isn’t one of the Mercy books. Also it is not The Wallflower. I am not sure about the Black Dagger Brotherhood. I will check it out. Also I don’t think it is set on Egypt but I will also check out As You Desire.
This sounds like a Thea Harrison plot to me, but I can’t think which.
This is driving me nuts because it sounds so familiar. I hope someone figures it out to put me out of my obsessive pondering. Definitely not Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels or Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series. I don’t think it’s any of Thea Harrison’s books either. She has very few humans interacting with her Wyr characters. I haven’t read any Black Dagger books in years so can’t confirm or deny the Wrath/Marissa/Beth triangle. Even so, this plot keeps niggling at the back of my mind and I’m mentally reviewing all the shifter books I’ve read within the last bit. It’s not any of Jennifer Ashley’s Shifter Unbound books. I’ll have to check to see if it might be any of Suzanne Wright’s Phoenix or Mercury Packs books, except all but one(?) of the heroines are shifters. Argh. I wonder if it could be one of Lauren Dane’s Cascadia Wolves books. I’ve only read the series once. Must go check my Goodreads shelf…
I think I’ve read this, but I can’t for the life of me remember which one it was (soooo… it wasn’t all that memorable, sorry).
Maybe in Ruby Dixon’s Bear Bites series, or Bianca d’Arc’s Bear Cove?
I remember that someone told the ex something along the lines of “you’re actually not so bad a person” and she kind of shrugged and said something like, “just because I’m the ex doesn’t mean I’m a bad person who will let the new love interest come to harm, besides she’s one of us now”.
Does that ring any bells?
If it’s not Dark Lover by J R Ward then it is awfully similar. The hero is with a woman who is desperate to be loved and while he likes her it’s more of a duty thing in his part. He falls in love with the heroine and the ex is upset while another man has fallen madly in love with the ex. Ex does help save the heroine when she gets captured and ends up with the guy who loves her in another book.
Definitely not Dark Lover. I just finished reading it due to your recommendation. It was good though. I remember in the book I’m looking for, the guy the ex falls for was the same species as the hero. He liked the ex even while she was kind of with the hero. She wasn’t married or mated with the hero. She may have been his favorite partner, although I’m not sure if he had more than one.
There’s a book called The Bear Who Loved Me by Kathy Lyons that had a plot like this. The heroine Becca has a nephew who is a bear shifter, which she finds out when he disappears and the bear Alpha comes to talk to her. He has an ex, Tonya, who wants him because he’s the alpha despite her being attracted to the alpha’s brother. Becca gets taken by the bad guys and Tonya, who is a cop and shifter, see it happen alongside the hero and helps him get her back. Tonya and the brother end up as the couple in a later book.
I’m not sure this is the book you’re looking for. I know there’s at least one more I’ve read with this setup. Now to just find it in my library…
Brigit, that doesn’t sound familiar, but it seems like it goes along with what I am looking for. I have only read Ruby Dixon’s alien and her dragon shifter books. I don’t think I have read one of Bianca D’Arc’s bear cove series. But i read so much and I am not very good at keeping track even on goodreads.
Casplet, I don’t think it is The Bear Who Loved me. I am pretty sure the guys aren’t brothers. The guy the hero’s ex kind of likes is really grumpy, and possibly scary. I think he is angry because the girl he loves is fawning all over the hero. She did sleep with the guy…possibly when the hero turned her away or something like that. Also I don’t think the ex has that important of a job, but I could be mistaken.
