  • Hurts to Love You

Hurts to Love You by Alisha Rai

RECOMMENDHurts to Love You by Alisha Rai is $1.99! This is the third book in the Forbidden Hearts series. It’ll probably behoove you to read the previous books, as this one does wrap up some things. Elyse wrote a Lightning Review for this one and gave it a B+.

Being bad never felt so good, in the third novel in Alisha Rai’s sexy Forbidden Hearts series!

Well-behaved women don’t lust after men who love to misbehave.

Heiress Evangeline Chandler knows how to keep a secret . . . like her life-long crush on the tattooed hottie who just happens to be her big brother’s friend. She’s a Chandler, after all, and Chandlers don’t hook up with the help. Then again, they also don’t disobey their fathers and quit their respectable jobs, so good-girl rules may no longer apply.

Gabriel Hunter hides the pain of his past behind a smile, but he can’t hide his sudden attraction to his friend’s sheltered little sister. Eve is far too sweet to accept anything less than forever and there’s no chance of a future between the son of a housekeeper and the town’s resident princess.

When a wedding party forces Eve and Gabe into tight quarters, keeping their hands off each other will be as hard as keeping their clothes on. The need that draws them together is stronger than the forces that should shove them apart . . . but their sparks may not survive the explosion when long-buried secrets are finally unearthed.

  • The Diviners

    The Diviners by Libba Bray

RECOMMENDED: The Diviners by Libba Bray is $2.99! This is YA fantasy set in 1920s New York, so you can bet there are plenty of amazing clothes and fancy speakeasies. I personally loved the cast of characters, especially the heroine Evie and Evie’s uncle, who happens to curate an occult museum. However, Evie definitely divides some readers.

Evie O’Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City–and she is pos-i-toot-ly thrilled. New York is the city of speakeasies, shopping, and movie palaces! Soon enough, Evie is running with glamorous Ziegfield girls and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is Evie has to live with her Uncle Will, curator of The Museum of American Folklore, Superstition, and the Occult–also known as “The Museum of the Creepy Crawlies.”

When a rash of occult-based murders comes to light, Evie and her uncle are right in the thick of the investigation. And through it all, Evie has a secret: a mysterious power that could help catch the killer–if he doesn’t catch her first.

  • Scandal of the Season

Scandal of the Season by Christie Kelley

Scandal of the Season by Christie Kelley is 99c! This is the fourth book in the Spinster Club series and features a holiday setting and a fake relationship. Be warned as some of the reviews mention elements of dubious consent. If you’ve read this one, definitely leave a comment. All of the other books in the series are discounted as well.

    A Daring Charade…

For ten years, Anthony Westfield, Viscount Somerton, hasn’t been able to forget the woman with whom he spent one scandalous night. When their paths cross again, he’s shocked to discover Victoria Seaton is an accomplished pickpocket. But Somerton leads a double life of his own. Working on an undercover assignment, he makes Victoria a proposition: pretend to be his mistress or risk ruin. Yet soon he’s tempted to turn their charade into reality—and surrender to an explosive passion.

    A Holiday To Remember…

Victoria can’t believe the man who almost destroyed her life a decade ago is now threatening to unravel her secrets. But posing as his mistress at a holiday country party is a game she can play well. For just one look into Somerton’s eyes still weakens her with lust. And with Christmas fast approaching, every kiss they share under the mistletoe only makes Victoria fall more deeply in love.

  • His Majesty’s Dragon

His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik

RECOMMENDEDHis Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik is 99c! Carrie mentioned she started reading this in a previous Whatcha Reading and there were many comments about how great this book is. We also have an early review of this book by Candy, who says it’s “utterly goddamn awesome.”

Aerial combat brings a thrilling new dimension to the Napoleonic Wars as valiant warriors ride mighty fighting dragons, bred for size or speed. When HMS Reliant captures a French frigate and seizes the precious cargo, an unhatched dragon egg, fate sweeps Captain Will Laurence from his seafaring life into an uncertain future – and an unexpected kinship with a most extraordinary creature.

Thrust into the rarified world of the Aerial Corps as master of the dragon Temeraire, he will face a crash course in the daring tactics of airborne battle. For as France’s own dragon-borne forces rally to breach British soil in Bonaparte’s boldest gambit, Laurence and Temeraire must soar into their own baptism of fire.

Breaking Breads: A New World of Israeli Baking by Uri Scheft is $2.51. I’ve had it only long enough to make the challah, but it’s good challah. The introductory matter is bread porn.

More or Less a Countess by Anna Bradley is 99 pennies. Bluestocking heroine poses as her sweet-natured younger sister to spare her the attention of a rakish earl looking for a wife, any wife.

  2. JJB says:

I LOVE the Temeraire series! I know the later books tend to have lower star ratings on some sites, but personally I loved the series right to the end (I think the 5th book is my favorite.)
Laurence and Temeraire are BFFs for the ages, imo, and great characters in their own rights. And all the (however secondary) female characters are fantastic… Novik is def one of my top favorite authors.
I just wish the publishers would do a set of the books with matching covers… It would also, imo, make a kickass netflix show.

  3. DonnaMarie says:

I thought no dragon could take Mnementh’s place in my heart, but oh, Temeraire, he is such an amazingly realized character. Sweet inquisitive child mixed with fusty old woman. I was so sad to see this series end – especially since the visited every continent EXCEPT North America.

  4. Susan says:

I glommed the Temeraire series on audiobook. Simon Vance was the perfect narrator. I especially loved how he voiced Temeraire throughout the series and still sometimes mimic the little “ooohh” sounds he made.

  5. Linda says:

That Alisha Rai series is SO GOOD. I know it’s all about the romance, but it’s the whole dark story of the relationship between the two families (and how that affects the romances) that really gets me.

  6. Qualisign says:

The Scandal of the Season may be that Victoria has a dress that can only be closed with a zipper about 80 years prior to zipperdom.

  7. Thorn says:

I enjoyed “His Majesty’s Dragon”, and I gladly read all the rest of the books in the series… but I have to say that they get pretty damn dark.

  8. Katie C. says:

Another vote of so much love for Temeraire. The world is a better place because Naomi Novak wrote these books and created Temeraire. The whole series is so wonderful.
