The Fifth Season

RECOMMENDED: The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price matched. Elyse loved this book and gave it an A:
The Fifth Season is also a relatively quick read. It opens with a cataclysmic disaster and doesn’t slow down its pace. Its characters travel widely. My only word of warning is that the book ends on a massive cliffhanger. Fortunately the sequel, The Obelisk Gate, will be released in August. After finishing this book I’m making desperate grabby hands for the next one.
If you like immersive, action-driven fantasy and if you want a fantasy world that’s not Euro-centric–or if you just love a really, really good story–I cannot recommend The Fifth Season enough.
This is the way the world ends. Again.
Three terrible things happen in a single day. Essun, a woman living an ordinary life in a small town, comes home to find that her husband has brutally murdered their son and kidnapped their daughter. Meanwhile, mighty Sanze — the world-spanning empire whose innovations have been civilization’s bedrock for a thousand years — collapses as most of its citizens are murdered to serve a madman’s vengeance. And worst of all, across the heart of the vast continent known as the Stillness, a great red rift has been been torn into the heart of the earth, spewing ash enough to darken the sky for years. Or centuries.
Now Essun must pursue the wreckage of her family through a deadly, dying land. Without sunlight, clean water, or arable land, and with limited stockpiles of supplies, there will be war all across the Stillness: a battle royale of nations not for power or territory, but simply for the basic resources necessary to get through the long dark night. Essun does not care if the world falls apart around her. She’ll break it herself, if she must, to save her daughter.

Jade City by Fonda Lee is $1.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals and it’s being price-matched. I originally thought this was YA fantasy, but I think I’m wrong and it’s adult fantasy instead. It’s also incredibly violent, according to reviews. But readers loved the worldbuilding and threads of mythology weaved into the story. To be honest, the book sounds intense and awesome. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads.
JADE CITY is a gripping Godfather-esque saga of intergenerational blood feuds, vicious politics, magic, and kungfu.
The Kaul family is one of two crime syndicates that control the island of Kekon. It’s the only place in the world that produces rare magical jade, which grants those with the right training and heritage superhuman abilities.
The Green Bone clans of honorable jade-wearing warriors once protected the island from foreign invasion–but nowadays, in a bustling post-war metropolis full of fast cars and foreign money, Green Bone families like the Kauls are primarily involved in commerce, construction, and the everyday upkeep of the districts under their protection.
When the simmering tension between the Kauls and their greatest rivals erupts into open violence in the streets, the outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all Green Bones and the future of Kekon itself.

Disturbing His Peace by Tessa Bailey is $1.99! This is a contemporary romance and the third in The Academy series, which focuses on police officers and police recruits. I think the cover model on this one looks like Shane West, heartthrob of the early 2000s. Have you read this one? Or any of the other books in the series?
She’s got probable cause to make her move . . .
Danika Silva can’t stand Lt. Greer Burns. Her roommate’s older brother may be sexy as hell, but he’s also a cold, unfeeling robot. She just wants to graduate and forget about her scowling superior. But when a dangerous mistake lands Danika on probation—under Greer’s watch—she’s forced to interact with the big, hulking jerk. Call him daily to check in? Done. Ride shotgun in his cruiser every night? Done. Try not to climb into his giant, muscular lap and kiss him? Umm…
Greer doesn’t let anything—or anyone—distract him from the job. Except lately, all he can think about is Danika. He’s wanted the beautiful, cocky recruit since the moment he saw her. But she’s reckless and unpredictable, and Greer is painfully aware of what can happen when an officer doesn’t follow the rules. Probation seemed like a good idea, but now Danika’s scent is in his car and he’s replayed her voicemails twenty times. Christ, he’s a goner.
Danika’s melting Greer’s stone-cold exterior one ride-along at a time. Being together could have serious consequences… but breaking a few rules never hurt anybody, right?

RECOMMENDED: Kiss of Steel by Bec McMaster is $2.99! The second book is also on sale for less than $4. This is a steampunk romance, to which Elyse gave an A+ grade:
McMaster’s London Steampunk series is everything I want in a steampunk world–richly imagined, gritty and dark, and full of hot heroes and hot sex. Yes, the sex in this book is utterly delicious. Feel free to stop reading this now and order the book. Also, the hero is a cockney-accented, leather-clad, bad-boy vampire, so if Spike from Buffy gave you tingles? Yeah, go buy this book.
This steampunk world is more paranormal than clockwork, though. Normally I’m not all about the vampire/werewolf (can they EVER be friends?!?!) paranormals, but it totally worked for me here.
Most people avoid the dreaded Whitechapel district. For Honoria Todd, it’s the last safe haven. But at what price?
Blade is known as the master of the rookeries—no one dares cross him. It’s been said he faced down the Echelon’s army single–handedly, that ever since being infected by the blood–craving he’s been quicker, stronger, and almost immortal.
When Honoria shows up at his door, his tenuous control comes close to snapping. She’s so…innocent. He doesn’t see her backbone of steel—or that she could be the very salvation he’s been seeking.

I just read The Fifth Season a couple weeks ago and it’s astounding. A warning however for a few moments of brutal violence for those of us feeling a little vulnerable these days.
The Fifth Season was just superb. And devastating. I felt shaken for days after I’d finished it. I have the second book ready and waiting for some better week when the news headlines don’t require trigger warnings.
N.K. Jemisin recently retweeted a beautiful piece of fanart somebody did of Alabaster holding his son: https://twitter.com/nkjemisin/status/1045661355410436097
I loved Kiss of Steel. Loved it so much I read every sequel, even though I felt that none of them recaptured the first book’s glory.
Anyone who likes fantasy with politicking/family saga aspects should enjoy Jade City, & I thought the world building & magic system were super interesting.
I adored “Kiss of Steel”, but never could quite finish the sequel. The hero and the heroine just didn’t work for me, either individually or as a couple. Anyone here who could tell me if I could plunge into Book 3?
@maite Yes you can plunge into book three. I hated book two but really loved the later ones.. After book two you really get more out of the politics if you read them in order, but I believe two can be safely skipped.
The Swerve imprint has 100 ebooks (they say, I didn’t count) on sale for $1.99 through the 7th, including the Dance Off books by Alexis Daria mentioned in a Books on Sale post earlier this week, some geeky romances by Cathy Yardley, and Fire on the Ice by Tamsen Parker, which Elyse gave an A-. I read the first book in Tessa Bailey’s The Academy series. I thought it was Very Good although not my favorite of hers. However, if you are interested in this series I would do a little digging as the hero of the first book made some questionable decisions and while he didn’t creep me out I could see where others would find him creepy for sure.
