Author: Alyssa Palombo
Released: October 2, 2018 by St. Martin's Griffin
Genre: Historical: American, Mystery/Thriller, Science Fiction/Fantasy“Marrying forbidden love, devoted friendship, and the supernatural with Palombo’s signature passion for music, storytelling, and heartbreaking choices, The Spellbook of Katrina Van Tassel enchants with a concoction of love, longing, and loss plucked from the bones of one of our most enduring and haunting legends.” – Erin Lindsay McCabe, USA Todaybestselling author of I Shall Be Near to You
When Ichabod Crane arrives in the spooky little village of Sleepy Hollow as the new schoolmaster, Katrina Van Tassel is instantly drawn to him. Through their shared love of books and music, they form a friendship that quickly develops into romance. Ichabod knows that as an itinerant schoolteacher of little social standing, he has nothing to offer the wealthy Katrina – unlike her childhood friend-turned-enemy, Brom Van Brunt, who is the suitor Katrina’s father favors. But when romance gives way to passion, Ichabod and Katrina embark on a secret love affair, sneaking away into the woods after dark to be together – all while praying they do not catch sight of Sleepy Hollow’s legendary Headless Horseman. That is, until All Hallows’s Eve, when Ichabod suddenly disappears, leaving Katrina alone and in a perilous position.
Enlisting the help of her friend – and rumored witch – Charlotte Jansen, Katrina seeks the truth of Ichabod Crane’s disappearance, investigating the forest around Sleepy Hollow using unconventional – often magical – means. What they find forces Katrina to question everything she once knew, and to wonder if the Headless Horseman is perhaps more than just a story after all. In Alyssa Palombo’s The Spellbook of Katrina Van Tassel nothing is as it seems, and love is a thing even death won’t erase.
RHG says: Sleepy Hollow but from Christina Ricci…uh, Katrina’s POV. (Okay, I admit, the bulk of my Sleepy Hollow knowledge is from the Tim Burton movie and the TV show that regrettably only lasted one season.)

Author: Cynthia Leitich Smith
Released: October 9, 2018 by Candlewick Press
Genre: Romance, Young AdultNew York Times best-selling author Cynthia Leitich Smith turns to realistic fiction with the thoughtful story of a Native teen navigating the complicated, confusing waters of high school — and first love.
When Louise Wolfe’s first real boyfriend mocks and disrespects Native people in front of her, she breaks things off and dumps him over e-mail. It’s her senior year, anyway, and she’d rather spend her time with her family and friends and working on the school newspaper. The editors pair her up with Joey Kairouz, the ambitious new photojournalist, and in no time the paper’s staff find themselves with a major story to cover: the school musical director’s inclusive approach to casting The Wizard of Oz has been provoking backlash in their mostly white, middle-class Kansas town. From the newly formed Parents Against Revisionist Theater to anonymous threats, long-held prejudices are being laid bare and hostilities are spreading against teachers, parents, and students — especially the cast members at the center of the controversy, including Lou’s little brother, who’s playing the Tin Man. As tensions mount at school, so does a romance between Lou and Joey — but as she’s learned, “dating while Native” can be difficult. In trying to protect her own heart, will Lou break Joey’s?

So many covers are women walking away, through a gate. I remember when covers were all women running towards you, away from an ominously dark tower with only one light on…
Very interested to see what Tucholke does with the Beowulf story. I recently reread Michael Crichton’s “The Thirteenth Warrior”, so this will be a good compare/contrast read.
While this month is really all about doing the peepee dance waiting for the new Guild Hunter book to hit my mailbox, I’ll take a little Lady Sherlock as well as new Thea Harrison, Lionheart, and the latest installment of my favorite rock romance series, Fall from Kristen Callihan to fill the time.
October 2 is an amazing day for new releases! I am planning to start reading The Hollow of Fear tonight at exactly 12:01 AM, bad decision or no. But MUSE OF NIGHTMARES by Laini Taylor and THE LADY’S GUIDE TO PETTICOATS AND PIRACY will be joining friends on my kindle at the same time and will be welcome respite in another difficult week.
@Dorothea. Yep, I remember those covers too. And I always wondered why they were wandering around outside the castle/manor house in their nightgown!
@RHG Actually the Sleepy Hollow tv series with Tom Mison lasted for 4 seasons (although I admit I gave up after season 3). Also Katrina von Tassel in the tv series turned out to be evil so not sure if I could get into the book that uses her character
I’m most excited for Martha Wells Exit Strategy, the next Murderbot book that comes out tomorrow!
What a slew of good books! Thanks for this dangerous list.
Hallmark is a publisher now? Will the books all be movies starring Candace Cameron? Will a kiss be the height of physicality? Watch out, Harlequin
I hope y’all review The Royal Runaway. I’m interested in it but I don’t usually find chick lit very satisfying.
I read some excerpts from the new Jeaniene Frost. I want to love it because Veritas is a millennia old vampire judge, jury, and executioner.
I was really disappointed by the bits I read and I really hope she’s more badass.
In case anyone’s into that, the heroine in The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy is apparently ace. (It’s strongly hinted at in the previous book and confirmed by the author on GR.) I’m looking forward to it, tho I thought from the title and the end of the last book that there would be more piracy than the summary you’ve posted implies… I really liked, but didn’t completely love, the first book, so I’m just fairly excited for this one.
(And as per the goodreads page for Lady’s Guide, if you preorder it and you live in the US you can turn in your receipt and get a free e-novella abt the fellas from the previous book. Hopefully that’ll be fun too!)
RHG, re: Sleepy Hollow tv show–lol I see what you did there and I totally agree! One season INDEED. (I am still drumming my fingers for Nicole Beharie to get another SF/F leading role. Get on it, film/tv ppl!)
An Easy Death by Charlaine Harris
I know it’s not even Halloween, but I am so excited for Christmas romances, especially How the Dukes Stole Christmas anthology – Sarah MacLean, Tessa Dare, Sophie Jordan and Joanna Shupe all have new novellas!!!! That’s out October 15th and I plan to read it immediately.
Also looking forward to the Pets in Space 3 anthology coming to my Kindle on October 9th. New Mandrake Company novella from Ruby Lionsdrake, and I am a total sucker for space pets (especially cats).
JJB
ace???
@Camilla: ace = asexual

THE WITCH OF WILLOW HALL is really fun! It’s a Gothic romance that’s creepy lite with ghosts & a creepy house- not too scary for those of you who want some spookiness without having nightmares (aka ME!).
I read the Dodd book in 2005, I think, and remember it being problematic then, but not having the vocabulary to explain what about it rubbed me the wrong way. Probably that it all felt like her agency was taken from her, what with the prince kidnapping her, and having no regard for how she felt about him or being rediscovered. I think there were consent issues with the “seduction” scene, but I could be misremembering that. It didn’t stop me from reading the rest of the trilogy and I recall liking the other two books a little better, because the heroes weren’t as raging alpha-holes. That said, I wouldn’t have DNFed a book back then and would have read the rest of the trilogy because I was trying to read all her books at the time.
I think if I tried to reread it now, I would end up DNFing after throwing my kindle against the wall. Very old school crazy sauce vibe, but not in a good way. Your mileage may vary, though.
Ermergerd! I love all of Nalini Singh’s book! Soooo excited for this book to come out.
@JoannaV: the reason all those Gothic heroines were wandering outside in their nighties, while a single lamp burned in the tower?
The castles all have only one toilet each, and someone is taking a long time in there!
The final book in Rosalind James’s Sinful, Montana series, Sexy as Sin, came out on the first (At least here in the UK). It is on sale for the first day or two and also available as KU. Although the title implies Montana, the book is actually set in Australia. I loved it.
