The Courtesan Duchess
RECOMMENDED: The Courtesan Duchess by Joanna Shupe is $1.99! This is a historical romance where the couple is married, but estranged. This is also the first book in the Wicked Deceptions series, which Redheadedgirl loved! She mentioned this book on a previous Whatcha Reading post and called the book “delightfully crazy.” Have you read this one?
How to seduce an estranged husband—and banish debt!—in four wickedly improper, shockingly pleasurable steps…
1. Learn the most intimate secrets of London’s leading courtesan.
2. Pretend to be a courtesan yourself, using the name Juliet Leighton.
3. Travel to Venice and locate said husband.
4. Seduce husband, conceive an heir, and voilà, your future is secure! For Julia, the Duchess of Colton, such a ruse promises to be foolproof. After all, her husband has not bothered to lay eyes on her in eight years, since their hasty wedding day when she was only sixteen. But what begins as a tempestuous flirtation escalates into full-blown passion—and the feeling is mutual. Could the man the Courtesan Duchess married actually turn out to be the love of her life?

The Sea King
The Sea King by C.L. Wilson is $1.99! This is a fantasy romance and mullet aside, I enjoyed it. The hero comes from a matriarchal society. I also read this one out of order and while it probably helps to read the first book in the series (this one is the second), I managed without it.
He wasn’t supposed to choose her…
Seafaring prince Dilys Merimydion has been invited to court the three magical princesses of Summerlea. To eradicate the pirates threatening Calberna and to secure the power of the Sea Throne, Dilys vows to return home with a fierce warrior-queen as his bride. But politics has nothing to do with unexpected temptation.
She didn’t dare wed him…
A weathermage like her sisters, Gabriella Coruscate’s gentleness exemplifies the qualities of her season name, Summer. Yet her quiet poise conceals dangerous powers she cannot begin to wield. Better to live without excitement, she reasons, than risk her heart and lose control— until an irresistible Sealord jolts her awake with a thunderclap of raw desire.
Until evil threatens everything they hold dear…
When pirates kidnap Summer and her sisters, Dilys is in a desperate quest to save the woman he loves. Only by combining his command of the seas with the unleashed fury of Summer’s formidable gifts can they defeat their brutal enemies and claim the most priceless victory of all: true love.

Mask of Shadows
Mask of Shadows by Linsey Miller is $2.99! It’s part of today’s Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched. In one of my previous meeting book group meetings, two of our members were talking about this book and its amazing genderfluid protagonist. However, some of the chief complaints about the book is the pacing.
I Needed to Win.
They Needed to Die.Sallot Leon is a thief, and a good one at that. But gender fluid Sal wants nothing more than to escape the drudgery of life as a highway robber and get closer to the upper-class—and the nobles who destroyed their home.
When Sal steals a flyer for an audition to become a member of The Left Hand—the Queen’s personal assassins, named after the rings she wears—Sal jumps at the chance to infiltrate the court and get revenge.
But the audition is a fight to the death filled with clever circus acrobats, lethal apothecaries, and vicious ex-soldiers. A childhood as a common criminal hardly prepared Sal for the trials. And as Sal succeeds in the competition, and wins the heart of Elise, an intriguing scribe at court, they start to dream of a new life and a different future, but one that Sal can have only if they survive.

Once a Rebel
Once a Rebel by Mary Jo Putney is $1.99! This is the second book in the historical romance Rogues Redeemed series. It’s also a friends to lovers romance! Readers enjoyed the setting of the War of 1812, but others found the conflicts were too easily solved.
A ROGUE REDEEMED
As Washington burns, Callista Brooke is trapped in the battle between her native England and her adopted homeland. She is on the verge of losing everything, including her life, when a handsome Englishman cuts through the violent crowd to claim that she is his. Callie falls into her protector’s arms, recognizing that he is no stranger, but the boy she’d once loved, a lifetime ago.
Lord George Gordon Audley had been Callie’s best friend, and it was to Gordon she turned in desperation to avoid a loathsome arranged marriage. But the repercussions of his gallant attempt to rescue her sent Callie packing to Jamaica, and Gordon on a one way trip to the penal colony of Australia.
Against all odds, Gordon survived. Finding Callie is like reclaiming his tarnished soul, and once again he vows to do whatever is necessary to protect her and those she loves. But the innocent friendship they shared as children has become a dangerous passion that may save or destroy them when they challenge the aristocratic society that exiled them both . . .

I loved the Sea King, heads up, there is a non-graphic sexual assault towards the end.
That Shupe book is the one that made me “never again” her. I strongly suggest reading the first several Goodreads reviews for greater detail about “The Hero a.k.a jerk ass wanker shithead” and other potential pitfalls:

Here is where a name is knocking me out of a book: isn’t Dilys a girl’s name?
I had some serious issues with The Sea King.
For one, it needed to have about 200 pages chopped, as it clocks in at just over 600 pages–*so much* unneeded stuff that bogs down the plot.
But far worse is the utterly unnecessary sexual assault of the heroine by the villain (a villain who is so utterly over the top as to be absolutely unbelievable–no one in the book realized her was the villain? COME ON.) and the exoticism/fetishization of the Calbernans. It was just super gross.
And since book three is going to be about the Jaguar King, aka shorthand for either African or South American lands, I am done.
A couple other books on sale @amazon:
Thrall by Roan Parrish and Avon Gale (f/f & m/m retelling of Dracula) $.99
His Perfect Partner by Priscilla Oliveras (part of series with Latina heroines. Was mentioned in NY Times article on Romance novels) $.99
@ Hope. I’m pretty sure that Dilys was a female character on Postman Pat when my kids were little. So there’s that to knock you even further out of the book. Sorry.
As for Once A Rebel, I think there’s been two books in my 30 years of reading that have had an acceptable version of “let’s get rid of him by sending him to the penal colonies of Australia”. hashtag autonope.
@Hope, yep it’s a Welsh female name, and @BellaInAus – It’s Fireman Sam. I wish I didn’t know that! Why that show is still getting air time I have no idea.
