Cover Awe: Fashion, Intimacy, & More

Welcome back to Cover Awe! This is monthly post where we talk about pretty covers and their eye-catching details.

Will You Still Love Me by B. Love. A gorgeous black woman graces the cover. There is gold glitter and sparkles decorating the edges and her skin. She's also wearing a deep red lipstick.

Amanda: Need that lip color info, stat!

Sarah: Wow. That’s all I got. Scintillating, I know.

Elyse: I’m torn between loving this cover and knowing how hard it’s going to be to wash that glitter off.

CarrieS: Had me at glitter.

Olympian Challenger by Astrid Aditi. A woman in a blue dress stands before a moonlight sky. Her dress looks like it's made out of lightning.

Amanda: Gotta get me a lightning dress.

Sarah: Good plan.

Elyse: I need this dress as well. I feel like the lightning one would be for casual Friday. This is more Monday appropriate

CarrieS: Love the color

The Grace of a Duke by Linda Rae Sande. A man and woman in historical clothing are asleep on a bed. The heroine has her hand tucked against the hero's arm and their faces are turned toward each other.

Amanda: While it’s not an “in your face cover,” I love how fucking sweet it is. Like my heart grew three sizes when I saw it.

Sarah: Oh, my, that is unique – so tender and quiet and intimate.

Amanda: It looks like they just dozed off while talking.

RHG: Aw.

Elyse: Omg I love that. Also because I love naps so much.

CarrieS: That cover has problems but the snuggle napping wins the day.

The Forest Queen by Betsy Cornwell. The cover is a bright forest green. It has a badass leather boot and an arrow.

Amanda: You just KNOW there’s going to be some asskicking in this book.

Sarah: And I am here for it, most particularly because the asskicking is NOT in boots with high heels. Common in cover imagery, terrible for running through the forest.

Elyse: I WANT THOSE BOOTS!

CarrieS: These books are made for archery, and that’s just what they’ll do/gonna wear those boots to archery, and shoot arrows at you.

  1. OK, I have been an adoring mostly-lurker on SBTB for the last TEN YEARS and it is so thrilling to see my new book here. Thanks for the mention (and I have been searching for boots to match the cover since I first saw it!).

  2. Deianira says:

@Betsy: When you find them, let us know! I’m in Florida, so boot-wearing is pretty much restricted to the five days of the year I have to put on a sweater, but I WANT THEM! If nothing else, for Ren Fairs & Halloween.

  3. Alexandra says:

So I couldn’t find the exact same boots, and if I had to guess I’d say someone combined two pairs of boots irl or through photoshop. If you google “sharpspirit steampunk mad max boots” one of the first images/shopping results is very close. Same buckles, same curved toe thing but with a bit of gold, same colors, BUT no laces, 3 pockets instead of 1, one leather strap at the top instead of 2, and some lcontrasting detail where the laces would be, though you can see a bit of that detail on the cover boots. The same site has a pair of boots titled “cognac brown lace up boots” that have the same laces (the folded over leather bits instead of a hole with a grommet) and two straps at the top, but they’re much simpler and all one color.

It’s a bummer about not finding an exact match, but seeing how close the details are of those two boots combined I’m thinking maybe an exact match doesn’t exist.

  4. @Betsy, congrats! And I love those boots. I’m in Rome, where boot-wearing season hasn’t quite started, though. Love the lightning dress – very “Frozen.”

  5. LML says:

I grew up hearing “don’t judge a book by its cover” over and over again – frequently in non-book contexts. But that cover on Linda Rae Sande’s book…I’m judging and buying. What a fresh way to portray romance.

  6. Jazzlet says:

Those boots! I love boots, but with a high arch and chunky calves I can’t actually get my feet into most, but those, oh yes.

  7. Jolie says:

@Amanda: I think the cover model for B. Love’s book is wearing a shade from Pat McGrath’s Lust 004 lip kit (possibly Vermillion Venom).

    It looks very similar to

  8. Jolie says:

Woops, the link was left out.

The cover model’s lipstick in “Will You Still Want Me?” is similar to Naomi Campbell’s at the 2016 VMAs (see https://www.refinery29.com/2016/08/121515/naomi-campbell-vmas-pat-mcgrath-glitter-lipstick).

  9. JudyW says:

I also love the Boot cover. Very Robin Hood

  10. SusanE says:

@LML: That Sande book cover sold me too. You can also get that book in a three-book boxed set for only a dollar more (at least at B&N). She also has some free books and since this is a new author for me, I just picked up all of them.

  11. Susan says:

I’m wearing similar boots today, minus the straps around the calves. Vintage Fluevogs.

Now I want to read that book.

  12. Crysta says:

@Betsy, that cover is WORKING IT. Get me to that book (and those boots and the woman who wears those boots)! 🙂
