  • The Song of Achilles

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller is $1.99 at Amazon! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and so far, isn’t being price-matched. Check out the other deals (there are two pages) and they include nonfiction, scifi, and more. I’ve heard such good things about this book and it’s a frequent topic of discussion at my monthly book meet up. Have you read this one?

    The legend begins…

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

When word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, the men of Greece, bound by blood and oath, must lay siege to Troy in her name. Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause, and torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus follows. Little do they know that the Fates will test them both as never before and demand a terrible sacrifice.

Built on the groundwork of the Iliad, Madeline Miller’s page-turning, profoundly moving, and blisteringly paced retelling of the epic Trojan War marks the launch of a dazzling career.

  • Reckless in Texas

Reckless in Texas by Kari Lynn Dell

Reckless in Texas by Kari Lynn Dell is $1.99! This is the first book in the Texas Rodeo series and seems to have undergone a cover change! I really like it and I’m curious what the over new covers in the series will look like. Readers really liked the chemistry between the main characters, while others found the romance to be a bit too slow. The fourth book in this series is also on sale.

Rough and tumble, cocky and charming,
    Joe’s everything a rodeo superstar should be…
And he’s way out of Violet’s league.

Violet Jacobs is fearless. At least, that’s what the cowboys she snatches from under the hooves of bucking horses think. Outside the ring, she’s got plenty of worries rattling her bones: her young son, her mess of a love life, and lately, her family’s struggling rodeo. When she takes business into her own hands and hires on a hotshot bullfighter, she expects to start a ruckus.

    She never expected Joe Cassidy.

Joe came to Texas to escape a life spiraling out of control. He never planned on sticking around, and he certainly never expected to call this dry and dusty backwater home. But Violet is everything he never knew he was missing, and the deeper he’s pulled into her beautiful mess of a family, the more he realizes this fierce rodeo girl may be offering him the one thing he never could find on his own.

  • One Rogue Too Many

One Rogue Too Many by Samantha Grace

One Rogue Too Many by Samantha Grace is $2.51 at Amazon and $2.99 elsewhere! This book makes it very clear that there are two men vying for the same woman. I know that love triangles can be a turn off, but if you’ve read this one, please let us know in the comments if the heroine is truly torn between the two or if it’s pretty obvious which one she wants. I looked ahead in the series and the “loser” of this book is the hero of the next one.

When two of the ton‘s most eligible bachelors fall for the same young woman, only one will win her heart…

Anthony Keaton, Earl of Ellis, and Baron Sebastian Thorne have been competing since childhood. Now, they both have their eyes set on Lady Gabrielle.

Gabby feels like a fool for trusting in Anthony—but she doesn’t know the whole truth. Determined to guard her heart this time around, she’s looking for a man who is steadfast and eloquent.

Sebastian knows this is his one chance to steal her heart. He has everything she’s looking for. But when Anthony finally reveals his true feelings, how will she choose between the two?

  • Court of Annwyn Boxed Set

Court of Annwyn Boxed Set by Shona Husk

The Court of Annwyn Boxed Set by Shona Husk is 99c at Amazon! This set collects the first two books in the Court of Annwyn series and features fae characters. Readers seem to love the world building, but felt some of the relationships were rushed. However, two books for less than a dollar isn’t a bad deal!

From the author of The Goblin King and the Shadowlands series, The Court of Annwyn Boxed Set contains the first two books in Shona Husks new series, capturing the color, decadence, and danger of the Fairy Court of Annwyn.

The Outcast Prince, Caspian, a fairy prince with the ability to feel the history in anything he touches, ventures into the world of humans and meets a woman worth sacrificing everything for–his inheritance, the home he has always dreamed of, even his soul.

The Lord of the Hunt, Verden, is responsible for safeguarding the King and the whole Court of Annwyn. Taryn’s parents were exiled from the fairy world and she has spent her entire life avoiding her fairy heritage, but now she must get the pardon of the King or her parents will die. But the magic of Annwyn is failing and Verden may have to choose between the woman he loves and the safety of the whole mortal world.

Huge recommendation for Song of Achilles, and I am someone who doesn’t care all that much for Greek mythology or the Iliad. Her use of language and description puts you there in the story, with the heroes, the gods, and the common folk. And I loved that she tells the story through the eyes of Patroclus as an up close observer and the lover of Achilles. Also highly recommend the audio book.

  2. DonnaMarie says:

Based on my 5 star experience with Miller’s Circe, Achilles is mine all mine.

  3. Thanks so much for your feedback on the new cover of Reckless in Texas. We are experimenting with ways to convey that these aren’t your Mama’s westerns, including the fact that they read more like a sports romance. The books get edgier as the series goes on (the upcoming release takes on the cult of extreme conservative Christianity, adoption from the POV of the birth mother, how the just-suck-it-up stigma against mental health care in the farm/ranch community can destroy a family, and has a secondary romance starring a fifty-something Native American woman. Not your average Christmas book). I am also excited to see what the art department comes up with as alternative ebook covers for the rest of the series.

  4. @Amanda says:

@Kari Lynn Dell: Thank you so much for the insight! I definitely agree with the cover change. I don’t often reach for contemporary westerns. If someone is wearing a cowboy hat on the cover, I pause. Looking forward to seeing the rest!

  5. Rachel says:

I also highly recommend Song of Achilles, as well as Madeline Miller’s newer book, Circe, which is about the sorceress from The Odyssey (in case you ever see a deal on that one). Miller’s prose is unfussy but almost reads like a poem, and I found myself having to stop every few pages to sigh over some turn of phrase. Some days I pull the book off the shelf because I have an un-fightable craving to re-read a line that jumped into my mind that day. Also, I literally cannot get enough of her incredibly complicated take on Odysseus (who appears in both books).

  6. Maureen says:

That is a great cover for Reckless in Texas. I think what is so appealing about the cover-it’s an action shot in a way, instead of the guy just standing there showing off great abs. In one of my first full time jobs, I worked on a farm with mostly men, and there is something very sexy about seeing all those muscles doing a job!

I’m definitely buying Song of Achilles, I’m still on the waiting list at my library for Circe-but that should be coming soon.

  7. Michelle says:

I’m pretty sure I’ve read One Rogue Too Many, and it’s not an angsty love triangle IIRC. I also think the loser isn’t hung up on the heroine from One Rogue Too Many in his own book.

  8. Monique D says:

I loved the old Kari Lynn Dell cover. I think it’s a shame to have another boring shirtless dude. I won’t be drooling over this one. Thank goodness it doesn’t affect the superb writing and fabulous stories.

  9. MarciaS says:

Josh Lanyon fans might be interested: The Adrien English Mysteries: Books 1-3 is currently 99¢ at amazon. The regular price for this set is $7.99.

  10. Dora Benet says:

I’m a https://usabookreviewers.com/ reviewer (it’s how I get my Red Rising Trilogy books in advance, woohoo!) so it was really interesting to hear about it from the other side. I’d been wondering because I wanted to know if it was something to recommend to my author clients.

  11. Maureen says:

@MoniqueD-I checked out the old cover, and I do think it’s good. For me, this new one isn’t another boring shirtless dude with a cowboy hat on, just because he looks like he is actually doing some work! To each their own though!

So, I went to buy Song of Achilles, and imagine my chagrin when I saw I actually bought it in 2014 and have never read it!! That is just wrong…

  12. Karen H near Tampa says:

I’m all about shirtless hunks but I have to say I preferred the original cover for Reckless in Texas because it says cowboy and the new cover just says “shirtless hunk.” I have read and enjoyed all of the series so far but I’m not sure I would have picked up the original with the new cover since it looks too much like all those motorcycle gang/rock star/BDSM covers to me. There’s just nothing that says “western” and I don’t read the motorcycle/rock/BDSM books.

  13. Marg says:

I’ve read Circe but not Song of Achilles!

  14. Kari Dell says:

Thanks Monique, Maureen and Karen. This is all valuable feedback for my art and marketing folks. For the record, we have no intention of changing the covers on the paperbacks. Those will retain the original cowboy-style look. We are looking for ways to grab the attention of more ebook readers. And Maureen, you are exactly right about the key being that this is a man in motion, rather than just a shirtless dude showing off his abs. We want to capture that feeling of action since it’s such an integral part of the books for both male and female characters. Because this is an experiment and therefore has a very tight budget, we were limited to a stock photo and couldn’t do a lot of tweaking to add a western touch. What we do with future covers depends on the reaction to these, with the challenge being to somehow appeal to both cowboy fans and a wider audience who would enjoy the unique voice and diverse characters, and the topics this series explores that are outside the usual western genre lines.

  15. angstriddengoddess says:

I just tried to read Song of Achilles. DNF.

My problem was with the POV character. He was so incredibly passive! Everything happened to him; he only reacted to situations. He was an observer. His whole purpose was to provide a pair of eyes for the reader to look through, but he had no personality. The cover is prophetic.

Sorry to be negative, but maybe it’s useful to hear an opposing viewpoint.

  16. I was using Feedly to skim through my feeds and see what I wanted to click on, and I swear to wool, I read “Song of Achilles” as “SCHLONG of Achilles,” and let me just say THAT is a book I would read.

  17. Kari Dell says:

*choke* *sputter* Oh God. Schlong of Achilles. I just snorted my tea.
