  • What Happens in Summer

What Happens in Summer by Caridad Pineiro

What Happens in Summer by Caridad Pineiro is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is the second book in the At the Shore series. While some readers recommend this for a fun, cute read, other readers seemed to want more in the way of the romance. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

As the only daughter of a single mom, Connie Reyes swore she would never put herself or her child in a similar position. But when she runs into oh so tempting Jonathan Pierce at a wedding, she knows she must stay away. She’ll fall for him—hard. And he’s not the type to stick around. Ever since he left town after their teenaged fling,

  • The Little Paris Bookshop

The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George

The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George is $1.99! I don’t think this is a straight-forward romance, but I think it’s a book with really romantic elements. Correct me in the comments if I’m wrong, because I haven’t read it. Readers say this is a book for people who love books. However, others warn that there’s a theme of infidelity. Have you read this one?

“There are books that are suitable for a million people, others for only a hundred. There are even remedies—I mean books—that were written for one person only…A book is both medic and medicine at once. It makes a diagnosis as well as offering therapy. Putting the right novels to the appropriate ailments: that’s how I sell books.”

Monsieur Perdu calls himself a literary apothecary. From his floating bookstore in a barge on the Seine, he prescribes novels for the hardships of life. Using his intuitive feel for the exact book a reader needs, Perdu mends broken hearts and souls. The only person he can’t seem to heal through literature is himself; he’s still haunted by heartbreak after his great love disappeared. She left him with only a letter, which he has never opened.

After Perdu is finally tempted to read the letter, he hauls anchor and departs on a mission to the south of France, hoping to make peace with his loss and discover the end of the story. Joined by a bestselling but blocked author and a lovelorn Italian chef, Perdu travels along the country’s rivers, dispensing his wisdom and his books, showing that the literary world can take the human soul on a journey to heal itself.

Internationally bestselling and filled with warmth and adventure, The Little Paris Bookshop is a love letter to books, meant for anyone who believes in the power of stories to shape people’s lives.

  • One Night in Scotland

One Night in Scotland by Karen Hawkins

One Night in Scotland by Karen Hawkins is 99c! This is the first book in the Hurst Amulet historical romance series, and it has a definitely Beauty and the Beast vibe. A few readers felt the plot had some holes, while others loved the main characters. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

New York Times bestselling author Karen Hawkins begins a sparkling new series with this thrilling tale of a desperate beauty on an urgent quest, a dark earl scarred by his beastly past—and the ancient treasure that binds their fates.

A mysterious abductor . . . Someone is holding her brother prisoner in exchange for a gold-and-onyx box covered in mysterious runes, so Mary Hurst boldly sets out from the family vicarage to find the priceless artifact. But the man who possesses it, Angus Hay, the Earl of Erroll, is less than sympathetic to her plight.

A forbidding stranger . . . Himself a prisoner of his dark past, Angus refuses to yield the box—or allow Mary to leave! Suspicious of the alluring lass’s mission, he vows to wrest a confession from her, but unearths a fiery temper and a will as strong as his own.

An unbreakable curse . . . Passion flares between them, but now there is more at stake: an unknown enemy is hunting down the precious box, and will stop at nothing. Risking all for love, Angus must solve the mystery behind the runes . . . and trust the only woman who can awaken his forgotten heart.

  • Cast in Shadow

Cast in Shadow by Michelle Sagara

Cast in Shadow by Michelle Sagara is $1.99! This is the first book in an urban fantasy series that was originally published in 2005. Also, somehow dragons are involved. Readers enjoyed the world building, but some had issues with the book’s voice and tone.

Seven years ago Kaylin fled the crime-riddled streets of Nightshade, knowing that something was after her. Children were being murdered—and all had the same odd markings that mysteriously appeared on her own skin.…

Since then, she’s learned to read, she’s learned to fight and she’s become one of the vaunted Hawks who patrol and police the City of Elantra. Alongside the winged Aerians and the immortal Barrani, she’s made a place for herself, far from the mean streets of her birth.

But children are once again dying, and a dark and familiar pattern is emerging. Kaylin is ordered back into Nightshade with a partner she knows she can’t trust, a Dragon lord for a companion and a device to contain her powers—powers that no other human has. Her task is simple—find the killer, stop the murders…and survive the attentions of those who claim to be her allies!

  1. Ren Benton says:

Angus might not need that cape for warmth if he learned how to button a shirt, or at least wrap it across his chest before tucking it into his pants. I know he’s an earl and dressing him is a valet’s job, but we’re not talking something strenuous like tying a cravat.

  2. Heather S says:

“Come What May” by A.M. Arthur is $1.99. It’s a contemporary m/m about a closeted college student whose dad is making a bid for Congress and a guy who runs a shelter for LGBTQ+ teens.

  3. Jeannette says:

Recommendation for CAST IN SHADOW. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and have gone on to read the rest of the series. It isn’t really a romance book – more of a fantasy novel. The heroine definitely grows up and wiser over the course of the series.

  4. Yaara says:

I’m a big fan of the CAST books. Definitely low on romance, but amazing world building.

  5. Kathy says:

As long as we are going down the cover snark route, what the heck is that “tartan” curtain?

  6. BellaInAus says:

    @Ren Benton

Maybe his Dark Past involves a lack of money, which means he’s still wearing the shirts he wore back in his teens, before he filled out? He can’t get the buttons done up because there simply isn’t enough material to go around his new, bigger, buffer torso.

    And @ Kathy
It isn’t a “tartan” curtain, it’s his kilt. He’s washed it and it’s hanging up to dry. Out a second storey window of the building he’s standing next to which is just out of frame. That explains what a Scotsman is doing wearing pants.

  7. Nina says:

My memory of The Little Oaris Bookshop was that it didn’t feel like a romance. There are no HEAs or HFN. I’d class this as straight fiction or women’s fiction.

There is a lot to like, the idea of a bookseller prescribing books to cure souls and a great road trip. I did the audio version and although I love Steven West as a narrator the decision to have the book narrated in French accented English didn’t work for me.

And TW INFIDELITY long standing and costly to everyone.

  8. QOTU says:

Another fan of the Cast series. Michelle Sagara writes these purposefully to be more like a tv series, so the characters do learn and grow, but sometimes it does seem endless. I love that the personal growth is continued from book to book, not reset like an old cartoon. Definitely not a romance, but some strong friendships, and strong women. Sagara also continues her day job IN A BOOKSTORE, so you know she’s awesome.

  9. Sam Victors says:

    Wrest a confession from her?

    That doesn’t sound good.
