  • Once a Soldier

Once a Soldier by Mary Jo Putney

Once a Soldier by Mary Jo Putney is $1.99! Readers loved the strong heroine and how she paired well with the hero, but others found a bulk of the book to be dull and lacking any momentum. This is the first book in the Rogues Redeemed series. Have you read this one?

As heir to a title and great wealth, Will Masterson should have stayed home and tended his responsibilities. Instead he went to war. Now, after perilous years fighting the French, he intends his current mission to be his last. But all his plans are forgotten when he arrives in the small mountain stronghold of San Gabriel and meets her.

Knowing herself to be too tall, strong, and unconventional to appeal to a man, Athena Markham has always gloried in her independence. But for the first time in her life, she finds a man who might be her match.

Two of a kind, too brave for their own good, Athena and Will vow to do whatever it takes to vanquish San Gabriel’s enemies. For neither will back down from death, and only together can they find happiness and a love deeper than any they’d dared imagine…

  • The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires

The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires by Molly Harper

The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires by Molly Harper is $1.99! This is a paranormal romance that features a vampire hero and a heroine who is a daytime “vampire concierge.” There’s also a small town romance element to this book. Readers who are familiar with Harper love how she adds an element of humor to her romances. However, others felt the heroine was rather…boring.

Iris Scanlon, Half-Moon Hollow’s only daytime vampire concierge, knows more about the undead than she’d like. Running all their daylight errands—from letting in the plumber to picking up some chilled O neg—gives her a look at the not-so-glamorous side of vampire life. Her rules are strict; relationships with vamps are strictly business, not friendship—and certainly not anything else. But then she finds her newest client, Cal, poisoned on his kitchen floor, and only Iris can help.

Cal – who would be devastatingly sexy, if Iris allowed herself to think that way – offers Iris a hefty fee for hiding him at her place until he figures out who wants him permanently dead. Even though he’s imperious, unfriendly and doesn’t seem to understand the difference between “employee” and “servant,” Iris agrees, and finds herself breaking more and more of her own rules to help him – particularly those concerning nudity.

Turns out what her quiet little life needed was some intrigue & romance—in the form of her very own stray vampire.

  • Blade Dance

    Blade Dance by D.L. McDermott

Blade Dance by D.L. McDermott is $1.99! This is the fourth book in the Cold Iron series and it seems right up my alley, however reviews on Goodreads mention that it’s a more fulfilling story if you’ve read the books before it. Boo. Readers loved the hero in this story because he was seen as a villain in a previous book, and McDermott did a good job making him vulnerable.

For fans of Jeaniene Frost and Kresley Cole, Blade Dance is the fourth book in D.L. McDermott’s fast-paced and sexy paranormal romance series about the Boston Fae—a full-length novel available exclusively in ebook!

Boston schoolteacher Ann Phillips knows better than to trust the Fae, but when one of her second graders turns up to class with both arms covered in magical tattoos, she has no choice but to turn to Finn MacUmhaill, the dangerous and charismatic Fae crime lord who controls Charlestown, for help.

Finn MacUmhaill, leader of the Fianna, has had his eye on Ann Phillips for months, but a recent showdown with an old enemy has left his house broken. Between the crippling blow dealt to the Fianna and his son’s recent defection, he hasn’t had time to woo the pretty redhead. When she turns up on his doorstep asking for his help, he thinks he’s found the way to win her, but before he can act, the child goes missing, kidnapped by a rogue Druid who has discovered the key to destroying the wall between worlds.

Now, Finn and Ann must ally themselves with an old adversary—the treacherous Prince Consort—to save the boy, or risk the destruction of the wall that keeps the corrupt Fae Queen and her Court at bay…

  • Conjuring Quantico

    Conjuring Quantico by T.S. Paul

Conjuring Quantico by T.S. Paul is 99c at Amazon! This is the first book in the Federal Witch urban fantasy series and several of the next books are also on sale. Readers felt the plot and world building was rather entertaining, but stressed that they were distracted by some editing issues.

How do you cope with magic that goes its own way?

As a second year FBI academy witch, Agatha Blackmore has a curtain reputation. After nearly blowing up the school, an untended mid-air incident involving the FBI Director, and declaring war with the US Marines, she has to wonder if she will even see graduation.

But when a rash of mysterious disappearances catches the attention of local authorities Agatha finds herself asked to lend a hand to the investigation. Determined to offer protection where it is needed the most, Agatha and her quirky roommate Cat along with her mini- unicorn familiar Fergus, attempt to unravel the mysteries of the four distinctly magical disappearances before time runs out.

Does Agatha have what it takes to be an agent? Or will everyone that crosses her end up eating chicken feed for the rest of their lives?

along with her mini-unicorn familiar Fergus

Did somebody say tiny unicorn?? I think my inner 13-year-old just exploded like a glitter bomb.

  2. hng23 says:

I’ve been bingeing series lately & look at that: my library has the whole Cold Iron run & I’ve just borrowed all 4 books. That should take care of the next few days…

  3. LineJ says:

Two of the deals does not seem to be deals anymore, when I click the link for Blade Dance and The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires they lead to full price items. I am in Europe, does anybody know if that might be an issue? Does the deal still apply to those of you on the other side of the Atlantic?

Somewhat sad about this as I wanted Blade Dance.

  4. batgirl says:

It looks as if the editing issues in Conjuring Quantico spread to the blurb! “curtain reputation”? “untended mid-air incident”?

The sword on the cover of Blade Dance is distractingly huge. My first thought was that these were the tiny type of fae, and the sword was for a full-size human, but maybe it’s just a really big ugly sword?

  5. Manda Collins says:

Just a heads up that D.L. McDermott is better known as Donna Thorland.

  6. Heather Greye says:

I loved the Cold Iron series. It was a great change from vampires and shifters. I wish the series had more books!

  7. Ren Benton says:

@LineJ: The sale prices are in effect in the US. It’s a shame publishers don’t coordinate their sales in all regions.

(The world outside the US gets the worst of it, but USians get burned sometimes, too. Penguin UK has sales all the time, while Penguin US would rather never sell a book than discount one.)

  8. LineJ says:

@Ren Benton: thanks, I am in the strange situation that in my country, Norway, if I want to buy kindle ebooks I have to purchase from the US site. However, not all the deals and price reductions seem to apply to me. I have no idea how the logic for this kind of thing works, kobo says that those books cant’b be bought from my country and google wants full price. Geo restrictions can be a maze and a half. For some strange reason the full price for that Cold Iron books is more than double the price of the previous books in the series too. Which is strange and sort of prohibitive, I might have bought it anyway for $7-8 but $ 16.40 is a bit much just now at this stage of my pay schedule. #notbuyingtoomanybooks

Does anyone else find that cover men holding swords usually look more like they’re holding baseball bats?

  10. Carole says:

I love Molly Harper’s Half Moon Hollow Series that crosses over with her Jane Jameson Vampire series. The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires is the first full book in the series. There are a couple of prequels and I have rated all nine of the stories 4 or 5 stars out of 5. Heroines are feisty and snarky; heroes are strong, protective and sexy; and there is an amusing cast of supporting characters who become a quirky extended family. Great for those who like their Vampire and Shifter stories on the light and funny side. It is one of my GoTo series when I need a laugh and a lift…

  11. Peggy says:

@Carole – I heartily second! I LOVE Molly Harper and started reading her with an on sale copy of The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires. I just bought another in the series — definitely feeling the need for a humor respite at the moment.

  12. Peggy says:

OMG! I just realized that I own the entire Cold Iron series and have not read one of them. The sad, sad tale of someone who buys books on sale until their TBR pile is just scary. (A TBR strategy: I DID find that I could use the Ripped Bodice bingo card to unearth and read some older purchases. I’ve filled half of my card and am pretty sure that I will be able to belatedly fill my entire card just from my TBR, maybe twice! :-))

  13. KellyM says:

The sword looks like home made with cardboard covered in duct tape and paint and looks like a Dollar Tree DIY.
First, cut out your sword in cardboard, tape it carefully and put a light coat of silver paint to give it that slightly tarnished look. Make sure you pick up some cording in the craft isle to wrap the handle! For a finishing touch, slip a paper mache ball on the end painted in the same sliver paint. Ta-da! You have yourself a sword worthy of a romance novel for less than $5. I

On Saturday, THE LAST WOLF by Maria Vale is a Kindle Daily Deal for $1.99, price matched where checked. A lot of folks here have said it’s a refreshing take on werewolves.
