Cover Awe: Warmth, Strength, & Hair Pr0n

Cover Awe is where we talk about some eye-catching covers we’ve seen recently! We hope you see something gorgeous in this group that makes you take a second look.

Mirage by Somaiya Daud. A purple cover with a jali, which is a lattice screen often seen in Indian architecture. It also has a kaleidoscope feel with gold elements.

Amanda: I’m hoping the hardcover has a raised design for a great 3D effect!

RHG: Ooooooooh.

Elyse: I have that preordered!

Amanda: I also like that kaleidoscope feel.

CarrieS: I would buy this book just to display that cover.

Game On by Nicola Marsh. A brunette woman from the hips up. She has her hair in a ponytail and is wearing a plain black sports bra. She has some amazing defined abs.Long Game by Catherine Evans. A woman with her hair pulled back. She's always wearing a black sports bra. Her arms are crossed over her chest. She has some killer biceps and abs.Fair Game by Amy Andrews. A woman from behind. She's blonde and has her hair pulled into a high ponytail. She's wearing yoga pants and a black and white sports bra that criss-crosses across her back. Holy back muscles Batman!

Sarah: I did a podcast with the authors of this series but LOOK at these covers. They’re all set in the women’s Aussie Rules Football league.

Amanda: ABS AND SHOULDERS AND ARMS

Sarah: I KNOW OMG.

I have a legit crush on the cover model for Long Game.

Amanda: And also, what I like is that even though they’re showing skin, it doesn’t feel sexualized.

Sarah: Yes. Just strength. How great are those?

I’d hang those on the wall of my gym.

CarrieS: I’m not crazy about the first one (what is she looking at?) but I love the second and third.

His Sunshine Girl by Preethi Venugopala. An Indian woman in white dress holding a brilliant blue peacock feather. She's inside somewhere and the background is a warm brown and gold.

Elyse: I’m really drawn to warm colors and gold tones, but adding a pop of turquoise too really made his cover stand out to me.

Amanda: Definitely getting the warmth here! I get the sense that somewhere a fire is burning or the sun is setting and it’s just reflecting off the walls.

CarrieS: Yes and yes.

A Daring Venture by Elizabeth Camden. A blonde woman is facing away from the reader and is staring at a bridge. Her hair is twisted up and fastened with a gorgeous, bejeweled hair clip.

Amanda: I saw this cover on Robin Bradford’s twitter. She found it to be a “lovely cover” and I agree.

RHG: Ohhhhhhhh!

Sarah: The hair jewelry and the three quarter turning away is a great combo to grab my attention.

CarrieS: Elizabeth Camden always has great covers but the hairclip on this one takes the cake. I also love her subtle backgrounds which always tell me right away that yes, this is a historical, and no, it’s not Regency England.

Elyse: That is straight up hair pr0n!

I have a copy of Mirage from my library and only the word is raised, none of the design

  2. I just saw on NetGalley that there will be a 4th Woman of War book. I wish they stuck with the black clothes, but she is also super strong. https://www.netgalley.com/catalog/book/147787

  3. Cyranetta says:

I did have a problem with “His Sunshine Girl”. Although the color use is lovely, there’s a lack of definition between her bare arm and the background, so that it took me a while to see that there was a woman’s form – at first all I saw was a rather confused abstract.

  4. That Mirage cover is everywhere and I am loving it. It’s like a jeweled harem screen from a palace.

The Women of War covers are the female answer to the Shirtless Alpha Male covers. The one on Long Game is just daring you “Come at me bro. I’ll teach you how a girl fights. And scrape you off the floor into the wastebasket after.”

    @JenReadsRomance

And why pink? So we know she’s female? Really?

  6. brum says:

that hairclip – how does i stay in? it seems to heavy to not have a fastener to help it stay in.

    or is it photoshopped?

  7. Kael says:

Funnily enough Book Cover Salt just did a post about on Billelis, the guy who did the Mirage cover, right here, so if you want more book cover pr0n (and some great critiques of YA novel covers in general) here you go.
