  • Hot and Badgered

Hot and Badgered by Shelly Laurenston

Hot and Badgered by Shelly Laurenston is $2.99! This is the first book in the Honey Badger Chronicles. Sarah read this one and gave it a B grade:

Among my favorite things about Laurenston’s writing is how very affirming and inspiring and a whole lot of fun it is, because angry, fearless women make room for themselves, they get shit done, and they’re the heroines. More honey badgers, please.

It’s not every day that a beautiful naked woman falls out of the sky and lands face-first on grizzly shifter Berg Dunn’s hotel balcony. Definitely they don’t usually hop up and demand his best gun. Berg gives the lady a grizzly-sized t-shirt and his cell phone, too, just on style points. And then she’s gone, taking his XXXL heart with her. By the time he figures out she’s a honey badger shifter, it’s too late.

Honey badgers are survivors. Brutal, vicious, ill-tempered survivors. Or maybe Charlie Taylor-MacKilligan is just pissed that her useless father is trying to get them all killed again, and won’t even tell her how. Protecting her little sisters has always been her job, and she’s not about to let some pesky giant grizzly protection specialist with a network of every shifter in Manhattan get in her way. Wait. He’s trying to help? Why would he want to do that? He’s cute enough that she just might let him tag along—that is, if he can keep up . . .

  • A Lot Like Love

A Lot Like Love by Julie James

A Lot Like Love by Julie James is $1.99! James is always recommended for readers who want a contemporary romance with competence porn. I remember reading this one and I loved that the heroine owns a wine store. However, some readers felt that the characters required some suspension of disbelief.

The FBI wants her cooperation. As the daughter of a billionaire and the owner of the city’s top wine store, Jordan Rhodes is invited to the most exclusive parties in Chicago. But there’s only one party the FBI wants to crash: the charity fundraiser of a famous restaurateur, who also happens to launder money for the mob. In exchange for her brother’s release from prison, Jordan is going to be there—with a date supplied by the Bureau.

Agent McCall just wants her. As the top undercover agent in Chicago, Nick McCall has one rule: never get personal. This “date” with Jordan Rhodes is merely an assignment— one they’re both determined to pull off even if they can’t be together for five minutes before the sarcasm and sparks begin to fly. But when Nick’s investigation is compromised, he and Jordan have no choice but to pretend they’re a couple, and what starts out as a simple assignment begins to feel a lot like something more.

  • Unmasked by the Marquess

Unmasked by the Marquess by Cat Sebastian

Unmasked by the Marquess by Cat Sebastian is 99c! This is the first book in the Regency Imposters series and has a non-binary heroine, who uses she/her pronouns. Some readers felt the plot was a bit all over the place, while others loved this queer historical. Have you read it?

    The one you love…

Robert Selby is determined to see his sister make an advantageous match. But he has two problems: the Selbys have no connections or money and Robert is really a housemaid named Charity Church. She’s enjoyed every minute of her masquerade over the past six years, but she knows her pretense is nearing an end. Charity needs to see her beloved friend married well and then Robert Selby will disappear…forever.

May not be who you think…

Alistair, Marquess of Pembroke, has spent years repairing the estate ruined by his wastrel father, and nothing is more important than protecting his fortune and name. He shouldn’t be so beguiled by the charming young man who shows up on his doorstep asking for favors. And he certainly shouldn’t be thinking of all the disreputable things he’d like to do to the impertinent scamp.

    But is who you need…

When Charity’s true nature is revealed, Alistair knows he can’t marry a scandalous woman in breeches, and Charity isn’t about to lace herself into a corset and play a respectable miss. Can these stubborn souls learn to sacrifice what they’ve always wanted for a love that is more than they could have imagined?

  • To Win Her Heart

To Win Her Heart by Mackenzie Crowne

To Win Her Heart by Mackenzie Crowne is $1.99! This contemporary is full of catnip: fake relationship, off limits relationship, hero has a huge crush on the heroine. There does appear to be a suspense element, which readers felt didn’t truly deliver. It has a 4.2-star rating on Goodreads.

In order to protect her, they’ll both have to let their guards down…

Country music’s It Girl Jessi Tucker is fed up with her family’s stifling security measures. The threat of a dangerous stalker has gotten the men in her life—including her football star cousin, Tuck Tucker—monitoring her every move. To get the freedom she yearns for, Jessi hatches a plan to recruit Max Grayson, Tuck’s sexy brawler best friend, to play the role of her new boyfriend. But if her scheme works, will she be forced to hide her true romantic feelings for the sake of her independence? Or will she finally steal the heart of her dream man?…

Max has been pining for Jessi for years and would do anything to protect her, but a professional cage fighter with too many skeletons in his closet has no business being with one of America’s sweethearts. Yet while Max does his best to keep Jessi at arm’s length, the Tucker family persuades him to accept her offer.

Max believes he can keep Jessi safe from danger, but can he shelter her from his own dark secrets, the media’s unforgiving spotlight—and a mutual desire that’s harder to resist each day…

I read the Cat Sebastian and I really liked it and I’d agree that it was a little all over the place. But I didn’t care. The set up also took a big suspension of disbelief for me but once things got going, I enjoyed it a lot.

I like Cat Sebastian’s work queering Regency Romance – this is her take on the chick in pants trope. I can’t speak to the non-binary rep, but I liked that it did not have a “non-binary 101” tone.

  2. hng23 says:

Hot and Badgered needs some cover snark, because his head is too small, as well as pasted on poorly- you can see the mismatch at the back of the neck. Having said that, I will read this because Laurenston’s shifter books are comedy gold.

I also liked the Julie James book, which is #2 in the FBI/US Attorney series.

  3. I absolutely loved Unmasked By The Marquess! And I agree with Cleo: I also liked that it didn’t have a “non-binary 101” tone.

  4. Jill-Marie says:

Is “Hot and Badgered” as much fun as it sounds? This is outside my usual genre but it looks fun and I can always use fun.

I love Jule James. Sadly, she does not write as fast as I consume.

  5. Jill-Marie says:

*Julie. Julie James. Although I am sure Jule James is also a fine person.

  6. Maile says:

Charlotte Stein’s ‘Never Sweeter’ is on sale for 99 cents! CW for the plot – heroine reconnects with hero who bullied her severely in high school, and is now trying to make amends. Ordinarily, this would be a huge NOPE for me, but Charlotte’s writing is so incredible that it not only works, but is also very emotionally rewarding.

  7. Meredith says:

I bought Hot and Badgered the last time it was recommended here, and It. Is. HILARIOUS. It’s waaaaaaay over the top, but if you just roll with things it’s a really good time.

  8. Quidnunc says:

I wasn’t sure if I would like Hot and Badgered, but the humor was right up my alley. Lots of themes of sisters having each other’s backs.
