  • An Unkindness of Magicians

An Unkindness of Magicians by Kat Howard

RECOMMENDED: An Unkindness of Magicians by Kat Howard is $2.99! This is part of the two pages of Kindle Daily Deals today and is bring price-matched. I would recommended this only if you’re in a “burn it all down” mood. The book is violent, graphic, and the characters experience racism, sexism, and the like. But the main character is a witch who essentially wants to dismantle the ruling magic party because they’re terrible.

There is a dark secret that is hiding at the heart of New York City and diminishing the city’s magicians’ power in this fantasy thriller by acclaimed author Kat Howard.

In New York City, magic controls everything. But the power of magic is fading. No one knows what is happening, except for Sydney—a new, rare magician with incredible power that has been unmatched in decades, and she may be the only person who is able to stop the darkness that is weakening the magic. But Sydney doesn’t want to help the system, she wants to destroy it.

Sydney comes from the House of Shadows, which controls the magic with the help of sacrifices from magicians.

  • Damsel in Distress

Damsel in Distress by Heather Graham

Damsel in Distress by Heather Graham is $1.99 at Amazon! This historical romance has a heroine who is a maiden by day, and a bandit by night. This is a reprint of the same book under Graham’s other pen name, Shannon Drake, just in case the book sounded familiar to anyone. Some readers though there was way too much going on, while others loved the sense of adventure.

In Robin Hood’s forest, the bandit’s silver sword belongs to Lady Greensleeves

Countess Katherine de Montrain is not your typical lady. Hunting alongside her father since she was a child, she is quick with a bow and sword and knows the forest well—but hides this expertise from everyone around her.

Years later, Kat finds herself a prized maiden in the court of Richard the Lionheart. As she resists the unwelcome advances of the crusader Damian Mountjoy, she relishes her secret life as a bandit who fights in the company of Robin Hood. There she is known as Lady Greensleeves: a crack shot, keen tracker, and champion of the oppressed. But passion is about to grip her heart, and love is never simple in the forest, where deception is the only way to survive.

  • Going Down Easy

Going Down Easy by Erin Nicholas

Going Down Easy by Erin Nicholas is $2.99! This is the first book in the Boys of the Big Easy contemporary romance series. Both characters in this one are single parents, if that happens to be your catnip. Some readers said it took a while to warm up to the heroine in the beginning, but said it was worth pushing through. It has a 4.2-star rating on Goodreads.

Hot fling or real thing? There are no Big Easy answers in New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Erin Nicholas’s sultry series.

As far as flings go, single dad Gabe Trahan is pretty sure that Addison Sloan is his best bet. Once a month, Addison comes to New Orleans and then…It. Is. On. Until Addison returns to New York, it’s just hot, happily-no-strings-attached sex. And beignets. And jazz. But lately for Gabe, it isn’t nearly enough.

Sure, maybe Addison’s gotten a bit hooked on Gabe. After all, who can resist a guy who’s so sexy, so charming, and so…available? But maybe he’s too available for her right now. Addison’s just moved to New Orleans, and relationships are definitely off the table. Besides, guys always bail when they learn her secret: she’s a single mom.

Only Gabe’s not running. Worse, he’s thrilled. But Addison never signed up for ever-after romance, and Gabe won’t settle for anything less. Now it’s a battle of wills—and when it comes to the woman he’s falling for, Gabe isn’t above playing a little dirty.

  • Rose Daughter

    Rose Daughter by Robin McKinley

Rose Daughter by Robin McKinley is $1.99! This is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Readers say that McKinley’s Beauty is a better take on the retelling, but others loved the character relationships in the book. Which book do you think is better for Beauty and the Beast lovers? It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

Award-winning author Robin McKinley returns to one of our most enduring fairy tales to tell an enthralling story of love and redemption

Once upon a time, a wealthy merchant had three daughters . . . and when the merchant’s business failed, he and his three daughters left their grand house in the city and moved to a tiny cottage buried deep in the countryside. The youngest daughter, Beauty, is fascinated by the long, thorny stems of an unknown plant that overwhelms the neglected cottage, and she tends it until, the following summer, its rich, fragrant flowers are the most glorious things the sisters have ever seen: roses.

An old woman tells Beauty: “Roses are for love. Not . . . silly sweethearts’ love but the love that makes you and keeps you whole. . . . There’s an old folk-tale . . . there aren’t many roses around any more because they need more love than people have to give ’em . . . and the only thing that’ll stand in for love is magic, though it ain’t as good.”

There’s no magic in the town of Longchance, but, the old woman adds, Beauty may not know that this is the result of a sorcerers’ battle that happened many years ago, a battle that left a monster, or perhaps a beast, in an enchanted palace somewhere in the deep forest . . . and a curse concerning a family of three sisters.

  1. CelineB says:

Luck of the Draw by Kate Clayton is .99 on Amazon, haven’t checked other sites. I liked the first book in the series and I’ve heard good things about this one.

  2. DonnaMarie says:

Really enjoyed An Unkindness of Magicians. It had a nice depth to the world building and a heroine you could get behind. And magic battles.

  3. Cristie says:

@ CelineB–thanks for the heads up on Luck of the Draw! I’ve been eyeing it for a while, but was trying to stick to my budget for the month. At 99 cents I pretty much have to buy it now 😉

  4. JoannaV says:

I second Donna Marie’s recommendation for An Unkindness of Magicians, I think it was one of my favorite books of last year. I loved the world building and the use of New York City as a setting for that magical world was very well done. And I definitely loved the main characters “burn it all down” attitude.

  5. ElsieEm says:

As “in a burn it all down mood” feels like just a bit of an understatement after the last two weeks, I have one-clicked.

  6. mel burns says:

Any opinions on Howard’s Roses and Rot?

Rose’s Daughter is an interesting take on Beauty and the Beast, but I didn’t care fro the conclusion.

  7. Cristie says:

NR Walker’s Finders Keepers (m/m romance with a cute dog) is on sale for 99 cents at Amazon.

  8. Jenny says:

Amazon is listing damsel in distress at $6.99.

  9. Floating Lush says:

@mel burns: I know it’s a Tam Lin retelling, which I *LOVE* but I have not read it yet, even though I own it.

  10. mel burns says:

@Floating Lush: Tam Lin by Patricia Dean is one of my favorite stories, so I am very interested….thanks a bunch!

  11. mel burns says:

    SMH….Pamela Dean!

  12. cbackson says:

@mel burns: It’s very similar to Dean’s Tam Lin. I liked it, but it didn’t feel precisely new to me.

  13. Floating Lush says:

@mel burns Dean’s Tam Lin and DWJ’s Fire and Hemlock are two of my favorites so you know.

  14. ClaireC says:

Personally, I prefer Rose Daughter over Beauty (and over the ending of the Disney film as well). I think Beauty reads a bit more YA, and Rose Daughter a bit more adult; not in terms of explicit content or anything, but in the character interactions and the lyrical quality of the writing.
