Romantic Suspense, Heiresses, & More

  • Addicted to the Duke

Addicted to the Duke by Bronwen Evans

Addicted to the Duke by Bronwen Evans is $1.99! This historical romance is the first book in the Imperfect Lords series. It has a road trip element, but they hero and heroine are on the sea, so…an ocean trip. The heroine was captured by a Turkish pirate previously, which some readers weren’t too thrilled about, while others loved the blend of action and romance.

A lovestruck lady charms the duke of her dreams during an expedition on the high seas in this sexy, swashbuckling novel from USA Today bestselling author Bronwen Evans.

Alexander Sylvester Bracken, Duke of Bedford, has a mission: sail to the Mediterranean and track down Lady Hestia Cary’s missing father. It is a straightforward task, but for two rather vexing complications. First, the sea holds painful memories; second, for her own safety, Hestia is to accompany him. As Alex battles the demons of his past, he must also resist Hestia’s surprisingly skillful attempts at seduction. After all, Alex has sworn to leave her untouched, and he intends to honor that vow—until he can properly ask the Earl’s blessing.

Ever since His Grace rescued Hestia from the arms of a Turkish pirate six long years ago, her heart has belonged to Alex. So when he agrees to help find her father, Hestia is thrilled. Although Alex tries to hide it, there’s passion in his eyes—and a frisson of desire in the air—whenever they meet. On board ship, miles from home, Alex won’t be able to deny her any longer. But with scoundrels lying in wait, she may not live to tell the tale of her conquest.

  • Survive the Night

Survive the Night by Katie Ruggle

Survive the Night by Katie Ruggle is $2.99! This is the third book in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit romantic suspense series, and holy shit…look at the size of that dog. Reviewers say this one can be read out of order from the rest of the books in the series. However, I’m unsure of what content warnings need to be issues for this book. (Animal abuse? Abusive backstory? Let us know in the comments.)

    He’s always been a haven:
For the lost. The sick. The injured.
But when a hunted woman takes shelter in his arms, this gentle giant swears he’ll do more than heal her battered spirit—he’ll defend her with his life.

K9 Officer Otto Gunnersen always had a soft spot for anyone in need. As Monroe’s very own Dr. Doolittle, he dedicates himself to rehabilitating the injured souls that cross his path—but for all his big heart, he’s never been in love.

Until he meets Sarah Clifton’s haunted eyes. Until he realizes he’ll do anything to save her.

All Sarah wants is to escape a life caught between ambitious crime families, but there’s no outrunning her past. Her power-mad brother would hunt her to the ends of the earth…but he’d never expect Sarah to fight back. With Otto and the whole of Monroe, Colorado by her side, Sarah’s finally ready to face whatever comes her way.

It’s time to take a stand.

  • Runaway Heiress

    Runaway Heiress by Syrie James

Runaway Heiress by Syrie James is $1.99! This is the first book in the Dare to Defy historical romances series that launched earlier this summer. Readers recommend this one if you want a light, fun historical. But other readers mention that the heroine felt too progressive for the time period.

When a runaway heiress runs into trouble, she may end up exactly where she belongs…

Brainy and college-educated, American heiress Alexandra Atherton will do anything to avoid marriage to the English peer her mother has chosen for her—even abandon the life of privilege she’s always known. But as her escape goes horribly wrong, Alexandra must invent a new identity to gain the help of a handsome stranger.

Thomas Carlyle, the Earl of Longford, sweeps in and out of London disguised as a humble artist, earning just enough to keep his ancestral Cornwall estate afloat. When Alexandra crashes into his life, she awakens feelings and desires that he vows will stay buried. Despite himself, he needs this beautiful newcomer, for his sisters have run off another governess.

Alexandra is surprised to find she thrives in her new position at Longford’s home. But as she grows closer to Thomas and his sisters, and her relationship with the emotionally guarded earl unleashes their hidden passions, the truth Alexandra’s been forced to hide may end up coming between her and the only man she’s ever loved.

  • Rebellion

    Rebellion by Eleri Stone

Rebellion by Eleri Stone is 99c! This is the third book in the Lost City Shifters series and features a heroine rescuing the hero. The main reason why I wanted to feature this book is because the cover model has chest hair, which I’ve come to appreciate more and more. Be warned, though, that this book is on the shorter side.

Cole Brandt is a wolf shifter, sent by his pack to the Amazon jungle to negotiate a treaty. He’s unaware that the kingdom of jaguar shifters he’s meant to meet with has split—and Cole’s suspicion that jaguars are selfish and deceitful is confirmed when he’s seized by the rebel faction.

Taya Silveira, a jaguar shifter and fierce warrior loyal to the king, resents being assigned Cole’s rescue. She doesn’t approve of his pack’s involvement in her jungle—to her, wolves are greedy, weak creatures who will exploit the resources the Yaguara protect.

Struggling against centuries of ill will and prejudice, Cole and Taya must work together to prevent a devastating civil war. They can’t deny their physical attraction—with the heightened senses of shifters, their desires are plain. But if they give in to passion, they may be forced to choose between staying with their tribes, or staying together.

I just noticed that Ruining Miss Wrotham by Emily Larkin is being advertised in the sidebar for $0.99. I picked it up last week and I’m really enjoying it. It’s part of the author’s Baleful Godmother series which is Regency but with a paranormal twist. The twist is that the heroine had an ancestor who helped a Fae, and in return wished that all of her female descendants would get one wish granted on their 23rd birthday, but they have to choose wisely because the wish will have lifetime consequences. I also loved the first book in the series, Unmasking Miss Appleby, which is perma-free on Amazon.

  2. Magenta says:

I struggle to visualize a romantic hero named Otto. Perhaps that‘s a language issue and in english it‘s a pretty normal name, but in german it is a rather silly one.

  3. Jackie says:

I was going to say I’m intrigued by Survive the Night because of the dog! Looks a lot like my big pup, who looks intense but honestly believes herself to be a lapdog. Hopefully there are no big content warnings for that one!

  4. Maureen says:

Has anyone read Katie Ruggle’s Run to Ground? It’s the first in the K9 Unit series, and the dog on the cover looks a lot like my Belgian Malinois. I tried googling the breed in the story but no luck. Like @Jackie said about Survive the Night, I’m intrigued by the first book because of the dog on the cover!!

  5. Leigh Kramer says:

JA Huss’s Taking Turns is free right now- it’s a MMMF (yep, that’s right) erotic romance. Super steamy!

  6. JenM says:

I’ve read Katie Ruggle’s entire K9 series. It’s definitely more on the romantic suspense than strsight romance side. There is implied child abuse that happens off-screen in book 1 but nothing graphically described. The one thing that might be problematic is that the heroes in book 1 and 2 are very alpha and not necessarily respectful of the heroines’ privacy. For example, in book 2, the hero picks locks and enters the house without permission several times. Granted, he’s doing it because he’s concerned about the heroine’s safety, but still. Their behavior didn’t bother me, (I have a pretty high tolerance for alpha-holes) but I can see it being problematic for others. On the other hand, the heroine in Book 4 is a K9 officer who is new in town and the guys respect her professionally and don’t try diminish her.

Very much on the plus side, I picked this up because of the K9 storyline and was not disappointed. Unlike in some books, these dogs are true working dogs, there are substantial scenes with them, and they aren’t there just to be cute pet window dressing. Overall, I liked the whole series and would recommend it.

  7. LauraL says:

Like JenM, I’ve read the entire K9 series. In Survive the Night, there are animals and a human who have suffered from abuse in the past. The hero gathers a group of misfit animals he has rescued on his property and the heroine is drawn to him. A good series and I always find myself drawn in by the MCs, and of course, the working dogs.

  8. ClaireC says:

I read Survive the Night recently and wasn’t really taken with it – I felt like the book couldn’t decide what it wanted to be. There’s a bit of a small-town feel (lots of diner breakfasts), but then there’s explosions and bad guys all over the mountain town? The heroine is escaping from an abusive situation, and the hero collects unwanted and abused animals, but there’s nothing on-page.

The several-chapter preview for the next book has me intrigued though! Police officer heroine and loner fire-spotter hero? I’m in!

Roped In by A M Arthur and Bad Company by K A Mitchell are both $0.99. Contemporary MM.

If we’re talking chest hair, can I just share my favorite cover of the year. Smoking hot cover model, just the right amount of chest hair, and—oh yeah—the book’s pretty good too:
