Clean Sweep
Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews is 99c! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals and there are some other romances included. I’ve heard good things about this book and it has a mix of scifi and paranormal elements, and I really don’t know why I’m dragging my feet on reading this series. Have you read it and how does it compare to Kate Daniels and Hidden Legacy?
On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast. But Dina is…different: Her broom is a deadly weapon; her Inn is magic and thinks for itself. Meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors, the only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who can’t leave the grounds because she’s responsible for the deaths of millions and someone might shoot her on sight. Under the circumstances, “normal” is a bit of a stretch for Dina.
And now, something with wicked claws and deepwater teeth has begun to hunt at night…Feeling responsible for her neighbors, Dina decides to get involved. Before long, she has to juggle dealing with the annoyingly attractive, ex-military, new neighbor, Sean Evans—an alpha-strain werewolf—and the equally arresting cosmic vampire soldier, Arland, while trying to keep her inn and its guests safe. But the enemy she’s facing is unlike anything she’s ever encountered before. It’s smart, vicious, and lethal, and putting herself between this creature and her neighbors might just cost her everything.

The Scotsman Who Saved Me
The Scotsman Who Saved Me by Hannah Howell is $1.99! This is the first book in a new series, Seven Brides for Seven Scotsmen. There is a “nursed back to health” element, if that’s your catnip. However, readers were expecting a bit more action based on the book description.
From New York Times bestselling author Hannah Howell comes a brand new series featuring the MacEnroys, a family of seven strong, seductive Scottish brothers who have come to America with nerves of steel—and who will take no prisoners when it comes to love…
A brutal attack on Emily Stanton’s family has left her for dead . . . until she is found in the woods by a handsome stranger with a thick brogue who vows to protect her. There’s only one problem: As a woman with a noble English background, she has no business keeping company with such a man.
For Scotsman Iain MacEnroy, Emily’s high-tone accent is a bitter reminder of the oppressive regime he left behind. The last thing he needs is to be burdened by the needs of a beautiful, blue-eyed Englishwoman. But taking care of elegant, educated Emily begins to transform Iain in ways he never imagined. Could it be that the deep divisions from the old world no longer apply in the new—and that Iain and Emily can share a passion as lush and wild as the Scottish highlands themselves?

Beyond Scandal and Desire
Beyond Scandal and Desire by Lorraine Heath is $1.99! This is the first book in the Sins for All Seasons series. Elyse gave this book a C-because she’s reached her limit in terms of heroes using the heroine in his plans for revenge. But your mileage may vary when it comes to this trope.
At birth, Mick Trewlove, the illegitimate son of a duke, was handed over to a commoner. Despite his lowly upbringing, Mick has become a successful businessman, but all his wealth hasn’t satisfied his need for revenge against the man who still won’t acknowledge him. What else can Mick do but destroy the duke’s legitimate son—and woo the heir’s betrothed into his own unloving arms . . .
Orphaned and sheltered, Lady Aslyn Hastings longs for a bit of adventure. With her intended often preoccupied, Aslyn finds herself drawn to a darkly handsome entrepreneur who seems to understand her so well. Surely a lady of her station should avoid Mick Trewlove. If only he weren’t so irresistible . . .
As secrets are about to be exposed, Mick must decide if his plan for vengeance is worth risking what his heart truly desires.

Lady Bridget’s Diary
Lady Bridget’s Diary by Maya Rodale is $1.99! This is the first book in the Keeping Up with the Cavendishes series and book four, It’s Hard Out Here for a Duke is also on sale. Carrie gave this one a B-:
Lady Bridget’s Diary is, structurally speaking, a total mess, and I didn’t believe a single thing that happened in it. However, the characters are delightful. I read this when I was down with the same cold that was afflicting everyone in America that particular week, and it was great for my humble purposes at the time: it was solidly entertaining and enjoyable, and I didn’t have to think a lot.
In the first novel of Maya Rodale’s stunning new series, an American heiress must learn to navigate London society and an infuriatingly irresistible rake . . .
Lord Darcy is the quintessential Englishman: wealthy, titled, impossibly proper, and horrified that a pack of Americans has inherited one of England’s most respected dukedoms. But his manners, his infamous self-restraint, and his better judgment fly out the window when he finds himself with the maddening American girl next door.
Lady Bridget Cavendish has grand—but thwarted—plans to become a Perfect Lady and take the haute ton by storm. In her diary, Bridget records her disastrous attempts to assimilate into London high society, her adoration of the handsome rogue next door, her disdain for the Dreadful Lord Darcy, and some truly scandalous secrets that could ruin them all.
It was loathing at first sight for Lady Bridget and Lord Darcy. But their paths keep crossing . . . and somehow involve kissing. When Lady Bridget’s diary goes missing, both Darcy and Bridget must decide what matters most of all—a sterling reputation or a perfectly imperfect love.

I love the Innkeeper books! They’re more lighthearted and focus more on family/found family, so they feel a bit more like Hidden Legacy than Kate Daniels. The current one going on Ilona’s website focuses on Dina’s sister and is really good.
Re: Innkeeper – Read it! You won’t regret it! Ilona rocks. Magic Triumphs comes out at midnight and she and Gordon (husband & writing partner for those few who don’t know) are touring in support.
Now’s the time to read/get caught up with the Innkeeper series. There are 3 books featuring Dina and the online serial picks up where the last ends with her sister Maud. Cannot recommend these enough. (Though, to be fair, I feel that way about all of their books.)
Innkeeper leans more to the comedic and nonexplicit but Ilona Andrews will still deliver the emotional punches. The books are fun and fast-paced and definitely worth your time and money.
The Innkeeper Series is so much fun. It is a great fun read, and part of the fun has been the serial nature of the series. You will likely not regret picking up the series. The current one follows her sister.
“A Girl Like Her” by Talia Hibbert is free on Amazon.
I think the Innkeeper and the Edge series are my favorite Andrews works (sorry Kate!). They’re both a bit lighter than the Kate Daniels series (well, maybe not true for all of the Edge books), and the romance element is present from the beginning – plus, the two series share a few characters. The Innkeeper series has some interesting alien characters, including a chef who looks like a giant hedgehog!
Re: The Scotsman Who Saved Me – I was also expecting more action, and felt that the entire book (as well as the next) read a bit “old skool” to me.
Lady Bridget’s Diary is only 99c on Amazon.ca! It has been languishing on my wish list since Carrie’s review and now it is in my kindle!
Innkeeper is very good (though it really takes off in book 2). Worth a buy.
Confession: Lady Bridget sounds like my catnip. I’m a slut for a Lizzy/Darcy or Bridget/Mark reference.
@Cassandra yessss! comedy + emotional baggage.
I would say this series is reminiscent of what I remember from that Johanna Lindsey book with the aliens??!! (googling) Heart of a Warrior! Enyone else get those vibes? but anyway.. read.the.innkeeper.books, you won’t regret it!
Clean Sweep begins with a dead dog. Just a heads up all.
A reminder for any other Kobo users excited by the reviews for Ilona Andrews’ Innkeeper series, Kobo will do price-matching. Go to “Help”, search for “price matching”, and fill out the form there. You have to buy the book first and then get a credit, but let’s be fair – it’s not like I won’t use the credit!
I really enjoyed CLean Sweep and its sequels. The concept of innkeepers in this series is unusual and interesting. I had put off starting the series (“oh no, another werewolf romance…”) but I ended up even liking the werewolf!
I think anything Ilona Andrews writes is fantastic. Clean Sweep started as a free weekly serial via their website back in 2013, but it is worth 99 cents to read in its entirety. This book is just the start to the series. The current book #3.5, which focuses on the main character’s older sister, is progressing quickly now online. (However, the current serial won’t make sense unless you read all the other books in order.)
Keeping Up with the Cavendishes are quick, “fluffy” reads. The 3rd in the series, Lady Claire is All That, was my favourite. Based more on Bridget Jones than Elizabeth Bennett, the Bridget character in this novel was a little too ditsy for me to like.
I want to shout from the rooftops that KJ Charles A Gentleman’s Position is 1.99mon Amazon!
I read Clean Sweep and while it is trademark Ilona Andrews and awesome – I just couldn’t continue with book 2 and 3 because of
a. Love triangle (although some reviewers have said its not really a love triangle as the second guy is more challenged than serious)
b. Werewolf / Vampire romances which is so over done these days
Mind you – I have bought all three books. I just keep dragging my feet on reading 2 & 3.
I haven’t got into their Kate Daniels for the same reason and the gore and violence which saddens me because I absolutely love their writing
I really want more Kinsman and Legacy books … these are both fresh and different and awesome. More Edge books wont go amiss either 🙂
@karenza I really recommend books 2 and 3. It really isn’t a triangle. Plus, I’d say their take on vampires/werewolves are different enough to not feel cliché.
@karenza ALSO, there is a tie in to the Edge books in #2!
@karenza
Ooooh, Kinsman. Yes! They are my favorite short comfort reads. When nothing else will do, they soothe the soul.
Also, ditto on reading 2 & 3. You won’t be disappointed, and the triangle doesn’t amount to squat. Also, also, not just vamps & weres, but badass ALIEN vamps & weres.
Another enthusiastic vote for Innkeepers.
The thing about the triangle and the Vampires/Werewolves is that the Andrews team is flipping both of those on their heads. Space vampires with a complicated religious and military hierarchy is unlike anything I have ever read.
The main way Innkeeper reminds me of Kate Daniels is in its surprising worldbuilding. It is so rich and complex and I want to learn all about the Innkeepers and the other planets and etc.
One way it’s unlike any other Andrews series is that the hero’s powers are centered around home and hearth, not being a wandering badass. There is so much new territory to explore with these sorts of powers, yum. It also reminds me of some of my favorite space fantasy.
As always, the Andrews team is a bit…enthusiastic about the male warrior physique and male alphaness, but I am sure that’s a plus for a lot of folks. It isn’t the best romance, IMO, but that’s not why I read Andrews.
If you want a full-fledged romance, you will need to read Book 3 and then Maud’s “novella” (which is creeping up towards novel-length).
