  • After the Wedding

After the Wedding by Courtney Milan

RECOMMENDED: After the Wedding by Courtney Milan is $1.99 at Amazon! This is book two in the Worth Saga and several of Milan’s other titles are available for less than $3. Carrie gave this book a B+ grade:

…it’s a great character study of two people with great chemistry, a great story about a terrible predicament with a happy ending, a good mix of intense emotion and humor, and a seamless continuation of the Worth saga.

The only thing more inconvenient than Camilla’s marriage at gunpoint is falling in love with her unwilling groom…

Adrian Hunter, the son of a duke’s daughter and a black abolitionist, is determined to do whatever his family needs-even posing as a valet to gather information. But his mission spirals out of control when he’s accused of dastardly intentions and is forced to marry a woman he’s barely had time to flirt with.

Camilla Worth has always dreamed of getting married, but a marriage where a pistol substitutes for “I do” is not the relationship she hoped for. Her unwilling groom insists they need to seek an annulment, and she’s not cruel enough to ruin a man’s life just because she yearns for one person to care about her.

As Camilla and Adrian work to prove their marriage wasn’t consensual, they become first allies, then friends. But the closer they grow, the more Camilla’s heart aches. If they consummate the marriage, he’ll be stuck with her forever. The only way to show that she cares is to make sure he can walk away for good…

  • His Kind of Trouble

His Kind of Trouble by Terri Austin

His Kind of Trouble by Terri L. Austin is $1.99! This is the second book in the Beauty & the Brit series. Good news! The first book is free and the third book is less than $3. At Amazon, all three books in the series totals around $4.50. Readers really liked the hero, though others found some difficulties becoming invested in the main couple.

Monica Campbell may have a history as a wild child, but she’s changed her ways. She’s responsible, and most importantly, she’s sworn off bad boys. That is, until filthy rich Cal Hughes shows up with his sexy British accent and killer smile.

Cal remembers every steamy moment he shared with Monica years ago, but he barely recognizes the straight-laced woman she has become. Determined to lure her into dropping the prim and proper act, Cal uses every trick he knows to remind her of who she used to be back when she was his.

  • Perdition

    Perdition by Ann Aguirre

Perdition by Ann Aguirre is $2.99! This is the first book in the Dred Chronicles series. I haven’t read this series, but I enjoyed Aguirre’s similar Sirantha Jax series. This is science fiction with some romantic elements, but with more of a focus on action. Some readers thought the male character was too perfect at everything, while others recommend this to readers who loved the show Prison Break.

    WELCOME TO HELL

The prison ship Perdition, a floating city where the Conglomerate’s most dangerous criminals are confined for life, orbits endlessly around a barren asteroid.

Life inside is even more bleak. Hailed as the Dread Queen, inmate Dresdemona “Dred” Devos controls one of Perdition’s six territories, bordered on both sides by would-be kings eager to challenge her claim. Keeping them at bay requires constant vigilance, as well as a steady influx of new recruits to replace the fallen. Survival is a constant battle, and death is the only escape.

Of the newest convicts, only one is worth Dred’s attention. The mercenary Jael, with his deadly gaze and attitude, may be the most dangerous criminal onboard. His combat skill could give her the edge she needs, if he doesn’t betray her first. Unfortunately, that’s what he does best. Winning Jael’s allegiance will be a challenge, but failure could be worse than death…

  1. Katie Lynn says:

The Veterans Affairs series boxed set by A E Wasp is currently free. Contemporary MM with former military heroes, some books are better than others.

May Archer’s The Way Home series boxed set is $0.99, contemporary MM. I haven’t read this author but I’ve heard good things.

Heat Exchange by Shannon Stacey is free through the 15th. Contemporary MF with firefighter heroes. This is my least favorite of the series, but still a pretty decent book.

  2. Lostshadows says:

Acheron, by Sherrilyn Kenyon is available free from Tor.com until August 17th, 11:59pm ET. You have to sign up for a newsletter, if you haven’t signed up for their book club in the past, but that’s it.

Not sure why they picked book 14 for people to start with.

  3. Darlynne says:

@Lostshadows: I saw that, too, and was puzzled. The newsletter mentions the next book–STYGIAN –so maybe this is a lead up to that. But honestly, I was so confused with ACHERON because I hadn’t kept up with the series. Can’t imagine anyone jumping into that head first.

  4. Karen H near Tampa says:

I love Courtney Milan’s writing but that cover is awful. The dress doesn’t look correct for the period and that piece of fabric floating off her head just looks kind of dumb. You’d think a writer of her stature would have better covers (previous ones have certainly been better).

  5. Caitlin says:

@Karen, I love the book and you’re right, the cover is beyond atrocious. I was kind of surprised by it, tbh. 🙁 Maybe one of these days it’ll get a redo, and be more faithful to the actual story and the timeperiod when it happens.

  6. Crysta says:

Yes @Karen H that’s exactly what I was coming here to say! What a bad cover for a great writer!

  7. Heather S says:

As a bookseller, I had quite a few guys tell me Acheron was the first Kenyon book they read; they became PNR readers and read all of Kenyon and Feehan and whatever else caught their eye. The choice of book on Tor’s part may reflect an attempt to that end.

  8. ms bookjunkie says:

I can’t claim to love that cover either, but I’ve got to give it to Courtney Milan: that cover stands out. It’s noticeable. It’s memorable. You’re trawling through an etailer, a review blog, or your own digital library… and when you come to that cover, YOU NOTICE IT. So boy howdy, has it done its job or what?

  9. Lostshadows says:

    @Darlynne: I can, since I actually did.

If the copy of the audiobook my library had mentioned it was fourteenth in the series, I completely missed it. (Parts get lost sometimes when they repackage the CDs.)

I could follow the first part fine, but wasn’t emotionally invested in the MC at all. The second part, I was rather lost. Lots of characters floating around, with no explanation of who they were.

  10. Lia says:

Ugh, I’d really hoped that the Courtney Milan book would’ve been on sale outside the US as well. So annoying. Oh well, fingers crossed for the next sale.

  11. Karen H near Tampa says:

@ms bookjunkie: I agree that the cover grabs attention, but for some of us, negative attention means “no sale!” I would never buy a book whose cover I disliked so much. I did read the library’s copy but I would not spend my money for it. And, if I’d never heard of Courtney Milan before, I would probably dismiss her on the basis of that cover. I feel that if they (the industry) can’t be bothered to do a better job, I’ll just find another book to read. There are so many books out there I’ll never get to all I’m really interested in so I’m always looking for a way to decrease my wish list. So, attention-grabbing is not always a good thing.
