  • Wicked Intentions

    Wicked Intentions by Elizabeth Hoyt

RECOMMENDED: Wicked Intentions by Elizabeth Hoyt is $1.99! I listened to this on audio after Elyse’s great review and loved it. I’ve since listened to the next two Maiden Lane books on audio as well.  Elyse really enjoyed this book and gave it an A-:

Serial killer. And Ghost of St. Giles vigilante. And river pirate. And bondage.

If any or all of those things appeal to you, I’d really recommend this book. If you’re looking for a spicy historical, or one not focused around the glittering aristocracy, Wicked Intentions fits the bill. Aside from a few ball scenes, this book takes place among the working class of London.

A man controlled by his desires…

Infamous for his wild, sensual needs, Lazarus Huntington, Lord Caire, is searching for a savage killer in St. Giles, London’s most notorious slum. Widowed Temperance Dews knows St. Giles like the back of her hand— she’s spent a lifetime caring for its inhabitants at the foundling home her family established. Now that home is at risk.

A woman haunted by her past…

Caire makes a simple offer—in return for Temperance’s help navigating the perilous alleys of St. Giles, he will introduce her to London’s high society so that she can find a benefactor for the home. But Temperance may not be the innocent she seems, and what begins as cold calculation soon falls prey to a passion that neither can control—one that may well destroy them both.

    A bargain neither could refuse.

  • A Gentleman’s Position

A Gentleman’s Position by KJ Charles

A Gentleman’s Position by KJ Charles is $1.99! This is a gay historical romance with class differences. Author, Lauren Dane, talked about how much she loved this series on a previous podcast. It has a 4.2-star rating on Goodreads and has a ton of positive reviews. Have you read this one? If so, what did you (or not like) about it?

Power, privilege, and the rigid rules of class leave two hearts yearning for connection in the sizzling new Society of Gentlemen novel from K. J. Charles.

Among his eccentric though strictly principled group of friends, Lord Richard Vane is the confidant on whom everyone depends for advice, moral rectitude, and discreet assistance. Yet when Richard has a problem, he turns to his valet, a fixer of unparalleled genius—and the object of Richard’s deepest desires. If there is one rule a gentleman must follow, it is never to dally with servants. But when David is close enough to touch, the rules of class collide with the basest sort of animal instinct: overpowering lust.

For David Cyprian, burglary and blackmail are as much in a day’s work as bootblacking—anything for the man he’s devoted to. But the one thing he wants for himself is the one thing Richard refuses to give: his heart. With the tension between them growing to be unbearable, David’s seemingly incorruptible master has left him no choice. Putting his finely honed skills of seduction and manipulation to good use, he will convince Richard to forget all about his well-meaning objections and give in to sweet, sinful temptation.

  • Fair Play

    Fair Play by Deeanne Gist

Fair Play by Deeanne Gist is 99c! This is an American historical romance set during the World’s Fair and it has an opposites attract romance. The reviews of this one are interesting as Gist tends to write Inspirational romances, though some readers found this book was too “edgy” for their liking. There is abdomen touching and foul language, which is to say your mileage may vary.

From the bestselling author of It Happened at the Fair comes a historical love story about a lady doctor and a Texas Ranger who meet at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.

Saddled with a man’s name, the captivating Billy Jack Tate makes no apologies for taking on a man’s profession. As a doctor at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, she is one step closer to having her very own medical practice—until Hunter Scott asks her to give it all up to become his wife.

Hunter is one of the elite. A Texas Ranger and World’s Fair guard specifically chosen for his height, physique, character, and skill. Hailed as the toughest man west of any place east, he has no patience for big cities and women who think they belong anywhere but home…

Despite their difference of opinion on the role of women, Hunter and Billy find a growing attraction between them—until Hunter discovers an abandoned baby in the corner of a White City exhibit. He and Billy team up to make sure this foundling isn’t left in the slums of Chicago with only the flea-riddled, garbage-infested streets for a playground. As they fight for the underprivileged children in the Nineteenth Ward, an entire Playground Movement is birthed. But when the Fair comes to an end, one of them will have to give up their dream.

Will Billy exchange her doctor’s shingle for the domesticated role of a southern wife, or will Hunter abandon the wide open spaces of home for a life in the “gray city,” a woman who insists on being the wage earner, and a group of ragamuffins who need more than a playground for breathing space?

  • Good Girl

    Good Girl by Lauren Layne

Good Girl by Lauren Layne is $1.99! The heroine is a country singer and the hero is a moody estate owner. I haven’t read this one, but I’ve read other Lauren Layne titles, and she writes such great dialogue. However, some readers thought the romance was missing something. Have you read this one?

Lauren Layne brings all the unpredictable heat of her USA Today bestseller Blurred Lines to an all-new cast of characters! Country music’s favorite good girl is hiding away from the world—only to find herself bunking with a guy who makes her want to be a little bad.

Jenny Dawson moved to Nashville to write music, not get famous. But when her latest record goes double platinum, Jenny’s suddenly one of the town’s biggest stars—and the center of a tabloid scandal connecting her with a pop star she’s barely even met. With paparazzi tracking her every move, Jenny flees to a remote mansion in Louisiana to write her next album. The only hiccup is the unexpected presence of a brooding young caretaker named Noah, whose foul mouth and snap judgments lead to constant bickering—and serious heat.

Noah really should tell Jenny that he’s Preston Noah Maxwell Walcott, the owner of the estate where the feisty country singer has made her spoiled self at home. But the charade gives Noah a much-needed break from his own troubles, and before long, their verbal sparring is indistinguishable from foreplay. But as sizzling nights give way to quiet pillow talk, Noah begins to realize that Jenny’s almost as complicated as he is. To fit into each other’s lives, they’ll need the courage to face their problems together—before the outside world catches up to them.

I really loved A Gentleman’s Position, although I think it works best if you’ve read the other two books first.

This is a lovely opposites attract romance between a scrupulously honest gentleman and his valet – who is absolutely willing to do anything, including being dishonest, to protect those he loves, especially the said honest gentleman.

KJ Charles is one of the few historical romance authors I’ve read that can balance being honest enough about what the nobility were like so that I realize I’d probably hate all of them in real life with compassionate character development so that I really empathize with them.

  2. Lora says:

For 1.99 I’ll go for it on Good Girl. I really like Runaway Groom but Love Story left me rolling my eyes.

  3. LisaC says:

Seriously encourage you to one-click A Gentleman’s Position immediately! Such a great romance & just enough angst to make you feel like the characters really worked for their relationship. One of my favorite books!

  4. CelineB says:

Good Girl was one of my least favorite by Layne. I found it to be very meh.

  5. Lizzy says:

Abdomen touching? I do declare, how does such filth get published these days?

  6. Sarah Peach says:

@Lizzy, I get the vapors just thinking of it!

  7. Zee says:

Currently binge-reading KJ Charles, and have read Gentleman’s Position three times. Strongly recommend the whole series, although Seditious Affair is my favorite. But then, Seditious Affair has probably my favorite hero ever. Gentleman’s Position is kind of a weird place to start because of all the spoilers, but it doesn’t matter. If you’re any kind of anti-capitalist, you should try KJ Charles. She writes honestly about power differences in relationships and it lets her be gracefully intersectional.

  8. Sarah says:

Gentleman’s Position was my absolute favorite of KJ Charles’s Society of Genteleman series! And it has maybe the most complex and nuanced discussion of consent within socio-economic power imbalances I’ve ever seen in a romance. It’s fantastic, both in terms of characters and in terms of social commentary. I LOVED it. It might even be my favorite KJ Charles book so far, and I’ve loved everything of hers that I’ve read!
