Cover Awe: Pinks, Flowers, & Feathers

Welcome to Cover Awe! This is the place where we discuss covers that we like and/or find utterly gorgeous.

Making Up by Lucy Parker. In the background is the London Eye ferris wheel. In the foreground, a man and woman are kissing. The man is black with a short beard. You can see him smiling against the woman's mouth. The woman is white with bright pink hair and she's cupping his face.

Amanda: The cover definitely captures the characters!

Elyse: I love his little smile.

Sarah: I adore everything about this cover, most especially how happy he looks to be kissing her. *Happy sigh*

Ignite the Stars by Maura Milan. An Asian woman stands in the midst of a galaxy in reds, oranges, and yellows. She's in a dark-colored, form-fitting space suit and she holds her helmet in her hand at her side.

Elyse: Pink and gold are my favorite colors and pretty much guarantee an auto buy.

Amanda: I love the look on her face. There’s some trepidation, but also “fuck it, I’m going to do this anyway.”

Sarah: Whatever is happening next, I’m on her side.

I Am I Am I Am: Seventeen Brushes with Death by Maggie O'Farrell. The cover is a brilliant teal color. The title is in white, block letters. Over the text is a gold-foil feather. There's a shadow of the feather that makes it look three-dimensional.

Amanda: The cover is stunning in person. The feather is this gold/bronze shiny element that really makes it look 3D.

Sarah: Treatments like that are so cool.

Amanda: Seriously, view this baby in person whenever you’re at a bookstore next.

Tyler Johnson Was Here by Jay Coles. A hyper-realistic illustration of a young black man is front and center. He's wearing a white hoodie and looking over his shoulder at the reader. Around him are various flowers in whites, pinks, and purples with green leaves.

Amanda: I was putting together a previous Whatcha Reading post and Elyse talked about this book. I’m so in love with this cover and, if I saw this on a table in a bookstore, I’d definitely pick it up.

Sarah: I stan for cover designers. There are so many levels to this image and I love all of them.

  1. Heather T says:

Have you noticed that all of the people featured on these covers have clothes on? I’m no prude, but I really liked that on the first cover — the only one with a couple, they are both wearing jeans, instead of him being fully covered and her one inch away from a clothing malfunction.
Also, in that last one, is it just me, or does he look like Frida Kahlo?

  2. Kathy says:

The bottom one puts me in mind of Kehinde Wiley. And yes @Heather T, the clothes! I am so tired of Photoshopped bodybuilders and women in evening gowns which won’t stay up.

  3. Monique D says:

I’m afraid to say that the cover for Making Up was the only good thing I can say about the book. What a disappointment.

  4. @Kathy: I immediately thought Kehinde Wiley too, even before I read your comment. Interestingly, given that it’s a print book from a major publisher, that cover must have been in the works a long time ago – a year, maybe? – so well before the Obama portrait was unveiled. Wiley’s been working a long time, and he’s been well known and had major shows touring the country for awhile — we went to one in Seattle three years ago, I think. So it’s no surprise that the cover artist and everyone involved in the book would know about Wiley. But it’s certainly a nice plus for them that the Obama portrait had such similar iconography!
