  • The Female of the Species

The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis

RECOMMENDEDThe Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis is $1.99! All the trigger warnings for this book, by the way. However, I absolutely loved this and I gave it an A:

The Female of the Species was a cathartic read. I was often flushed with anger, crying from sadness, or amped up with girl power. It’s a powerful book and one that I’ll be talking about for a long time to come.

Edgar Award–winning author Mindy McGinnis delivers a dark and riveting contemporary YA novel that blends the unflinching honesty of Laurie Halse Anderson’s Speak with the relentless pacing and alternating perspectives of Gone Girl. A stunning, unforgettable page-turner.

Alex Craft knows how to kill someone. And she doesn’t feel bad about it.

Three years ago, when her older sister, Anna, was murdered and the killer walked free, Alex uncaged the language she knows best—the language of violence. While her own crime goes unpunished, Alex knows she can’t be trusted among other people. Not with Jack, the star athlete who wants to really know her but still feels guilty over the role he played the night Anna’s body was discovered. And not with Peekay, the preacher’s kid with a defiant streak who befriends Alex while they volunteer at an animal shelter. Not anyone.

As their senior year unfolds, Alex’s darker nature breaks out, setting these three teens on a collision course that will change their lives forever.

  • From Duke Till Dawn

From Duke Till Dawn by Eva Leigh

From Duke Till Dawn by Eva Leigh is $1.99! This is the first book in The London Underground series and featured a heroine who previously had conned the hero. Many really liked the heroine and how smart and resourceful she was. However, others wished the hero and heroine had more dynamic interactions.

Eva Leigh launches a seductive new series that sizzles with the dark secrets of London’s underworld…

Years ago, the Duke of Greyland gave his heart—and a princely sum of money—to a charming, destitute widow with unparalleled beauty. After one passionate night, she slipped from his bed and vanished without a trace. And just when he’s given up hope of ever seeing her again, Greyland finds her managing a gaming hell. He’s desperate to have her… until he discovers everything about his long-lost lover was a lie.

In truth, Cassandra Blake grew up on the streets, picking pockets to survive. Greyland was a mark—to be fleeced and forgotten—but her feelings for the duke became all too real. Once he learns of her deception, however, the heat in his eyes turns to ice. When her business partner absconds with the gaming hell proceeds—leaving unsavory investors out for blood—Cassandra must beg the man she betrayed for help.

Greyland wants compensation, too, and he’ll assist her under one condition: she doesn’t leave his sight until her debts are paid. But it’s not long before the real Cassandra—the smart, streetwise criminal—is stealing his heart all over again.

  • My Lady Jane

My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand

My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Jodi Meadows, and Brodi Ashton is $1.99! This book comes highly recommended, though I still haven’t knocked it off my TBR list yet. This is a YA fantasy novel that many readers find clever and really entertaining. However, others didn’t find it very memorable. It has a 4.1-star rating on Goodreads.

The comical, fantastical, romantical, (not) entirely true story of Lady Jane Grey. In My Lady Jane, coauthors Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows have created a one-of-a-kind fantasy in the tradition of The Princess Bride, featuring a reluctant king, an even more reluctant queen, a noble steed, and only a passing resemblance to actual history—because sometimes history needs a little help.

At sixteen, Lady Jane Grey is about to be married off to a stranger and caught up in a conspiracy to rob her cousin, King Edward, of his throne. But those trifling problems aren’t for Jane to worry about. Jane gets to be Queen of England.

  • The Scandal of It All

The Scandal of It All by Sophie Jordan

The Scandal of It All by Sophie Jordan is $1.99! This is book two in The Rogue Files series, but can be read on its own. Readers really loved the heroine and note that you’re first introduced to her in book one. However, some wished they believed a bit more strongly in the romance. It does have an older heroine though, if you need to fill that square for Ripped Bodice Bingo.

It takes two to make a scandal…

What kind of woman ventures into London’s most notorious pleasure club? An outsider like Graciela, the Duchess of Autenberry, snubbed time and time again by society because of her Spanish roots. Ela longs to take a lover for a single, wild night, and within the walls of Sodom there are gentlemen to suit every forbidden taste. If only she were not so drawn to the smoldering Lord Strickland…a dangerous man who sees beyond her mask, and could ruin her reputation with a mere whisper.

Lord Strickland never permitted himself to fantasize about the sultry, off-limits lady, but then he never expected to find Ela in a place so wicked, looking for what he’s more than too happy to give. She may not be to the ton’s taste, but she suits him perfectly. First, however, he must convince her to trust in this dangerous desire—and in the promise of forever unleashed by one wild, scandalous night.

  1. Lola Jane Belloli says:

For me, The Female of the Species was really good but I’m not sure I could explain why. All I can really say is it has absolutely stayed with me. It is definitely a YMMV book due to triggers on and off the page. I do think Gone Girl is a poor comparison. IMO, the book is more psychologically complex, there is not a M. Night Shymalan “twist”, and Alex’s character arc is pretty impressive. Mindy McGiniss has serious writer skills.

  2. Darlynne says:

Tanya Huff’s VALOR’S CHOICE is on sale today for $2.99 at Amazon US. This is the first in a space military series about Staff Sgt Torin Kerr, on whom I have the biggest girl crush. She stars in the five Valor books, then moves on to three more in the Peacekeeper series. Recommended for fans of Sirantha Jax and Devi Moore (Rachel Bach’s Paradox trilogy).

HOUSE IMMORTAL by Devon Monk is also on sale for .99. I love this steampunk series about Immortals who are stitched (literally) and galvanized. Each book ends on a cliffhanger, but all three are out, so no waiting.

  3. Meg says:

Weird, Kobo claims that The Scandal of It All isn’t available in the US.

  4. Rose says:

The description for Female of the Species is giving me Special Topics in Calamity Physics vibes. Yes, no? Wildly off base? I loved Calamity to the moon and back but I know it wasn’t for everyone.
